Samsung’s Galaxy Note series is one of my favorite smartphones, and while the Note 20 series is mostly an incremental upgrade to the previous Note 10 series, it has made a big impact.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Review: Buy It On Sale
In this review, I’m mainly talking about the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra – the higher and more expensive model. It’s a gorgeous smartphone that does almost everything right. Still, it’s not entirely surprising that Samsung got everything right with the Note 20 Ultra – it’s an expensive premium smartphone, so expectations are high.
Sure, it’s priced at $1,300, but you can make the right move and either find a deal on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or take advantage of Samsung’s generous trade-in program. Just please don’t spend $1300 on a phone.
Unfortunately, the standard Galaxy Note 20 doesn’t get my recommendation. It lacks a few key features, although they are superficial. But the fact that it’s stuck on a 60Hz screen usually makes the Note 20 a write-off right off the bat. That’s just bad form for a premium phone in 2020, especially one that retails for $1,000.
I can’t speak for the standard Galaxy Note 20 because I haven’t actually seen or held it, but I’ve been using the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for over a week now. Physically, the main difference between the two is the plastic back on the regular Galaxy Note 20 versus the glass back on the Note 20 Ultra.
Galaxy Note20 Ultra Long Term Review: A (physically) Massive Success
The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in particular exudes premium quality with curved metal and glass corners and edges – it’s the most premium smartphone in recent memory. The big 6.9-inch display has a big caveat, but the incredibly thin bezels around the screen keep the overall phone within range of a standard large Android phone.
You really get all the effects of Samsung’s great AMOLED displays on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which is capable of a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate – the high refresh rate is mostly an aesthetic feature, but it makes the phone look and feel powerful, sleek and modern. You only get a smooth 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p, and the 1440p option is stuck at 60Hz, which looks and feels absolutely terrible in comparison.
I tried the 1440p 60Hz option for about eight seconds before realizing that the extra resolution wasn’t worth it – when I experienced 120Hz, 60Hz is the visual equivalent of the horrible sound of gears grinding. The 1080p resolution is very sharp even on the large 6.9-inch screen.
Unfortunately, the standard display of the Galaxy Note 20 is subject to a frequency of 60 Hz, which literally and figuratively does not look good when the phone sells for $ 1,000.

The Galaxy Note 20 series runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, which will mostly see performance improvements over the standard Snapdragon 865, with power-hungry mobile games, if at all. Benchmarks with Geekbench 5 show 956 single-core and around 3,140 multi-core performance scores, which isn’t much of an upgrade over the usual 865 that scored 894/3,322 on the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Combined with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s 120Hz refresh rate, the Snapdragon 865 Plus breezes through the day opening and launching apps, multitasking, using the S Pen to take notes and notes, and pretty much everything else. While the performance is impressive, it’s completely expected and nothing out of the ordinary for a high-end phone, especially one that costs between $1,000 and $1,300. Performance is certainly similar to other Snapdragon 865 phones.
Battery life is great, but again that’s what you’d expect. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra would regularly end the day at a decent 25% usage with four and a half hours of screen-on time (SoT), including video and music streaming, social media, instant messaging, photography and general web browsing/reading. news. If the battery life of a high-end smartphone is important to you, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will not disappoint you.
The S Pen is a striking feature of the Galaxy Note series, and it’s a useful tool. As with all new Galaxy Note models, the S Pen makes writing increasingly comfortable and accurate, and the Note 20 represents the pinnacle of Samsung’s pen technology.

Using the S Pen to quickly jot down notes and mark up almost anything on the screen and the ability to share easily fills the gap your fingers can’t. Signing PDF files without printing and scanning has always been one of the main draws of the Note series, but it never made it to the Note 20 series thanks to major improvements to the Samsung Note app.
Aside from writing or drawing, the S Pen is also incredibly useful for tapping the screen more precisely, especially if you have two apps open at the same time. It simply offers more precision than a clumsy, relatively large fingertip and will be super handy for quick work and multitasking.
For those who think this is a weird, outdated device to include in a smartphone in 2020, you probably aren’t reading this. And if you really can’t see yourself using it, it’s not my job to sell it to you, and there are plenty of other non-stylus phones to choose from. It’s worth noting, though, that it’s more useful than you think, and I miss having to switch to another phone to look.
5G isn’t mainstream yet, so I don’t have much to say about it. I was able to connect to T-Mobile’s “slow” 5G network and wasn’t very impressed. 5G networks still have a long way to go before they’re ubiquitous and shouldn’t be a reason to buy this phone
