The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (starting at $1,299) is still the best phone to go with if you want a stylus phone, especially since Samsung confirmed the Galaxy Note 21 won’t be available.
So is the Note 20 Ultra worth the ultra-premium price? After thoroughly testing this big screen phone, my previous answer was yes. However, most will have to wait for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which is rumored to have a built-in stylus and could be a suitable replacement for the Galaxy Note.
The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra sports a massive 6.9-inch display with 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, a faster 108-megapixel camera with laser autofocus, and a more responsive S Pen. The regular Galaxy Note 20 is a better option for those who can live without the 120Hz display and more advanced cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a better phone overall, offering more advanced cameras and a faster Snapdragon 888 chip. The new Galaxy S22 Ultra is set to launch in February.
However, as you’ll see in my full Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra review, it’s a great device.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was released on August 21, 2020 and is available on all major carriers. The 128GB version of the Galaxy Note 20 costs $1,299. The 512GB version costs $1,449 – the same price Samsung charges for its Galaxy Z Flip 5G foldable phone.
Note that the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is often on sale, and we’ve seen it for as low as $1,049 at Best Buy with activation.

With the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Samsung has made its most stylish phone yet. The angular edges combined with the sophisticated Mystic Bronze color give this handset an angular office feel.
I also like that the finish resists fingerprints well, unlike the Aura Glow finish on the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. You can also get the Note 20 Ultra in Mystic Black and Mystic White.
There are a few things about the design that I don’t like. First, the camera patch on the back is big and bulky, which doesn’t just remind me of a Boxer—it supports the whole phone. You can hear the phone vibrate when you press the top of the screen.
And while the curved screen is sexy, sometimes it can lead to accidental pressure when you’re holding the phone. In some cases, my screen touch didn’t register because I didn’t notice that my other hand holding the phablet was distracting me.

Measuring 6.49 x 3.03 x 0.32 inches (164.8 x 77.2 x 8.1 mm) and weighing 7.3 ounces (208 grams), the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra isn’t as large as the Galaxy S20 Ultra (6.6 x 2.7 x 0.34 inches and 7.7 ounces). But it’s still a handful compared to the Galaxy Note 10 Plus (6.4 x 3 x 0.31 inches and 6.9 ounces), which had a smaller 6.8-inch screen.
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra owners have received some complaints about dust and condensation accumulating on the camera body under the glass. However, our review unit didn’t exhibit this problem.
Overall, despite a few minor complaints, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra looks and feels exactly like a $1,300 phone.
The massive 6.9-inch OLED Quad HD+ display on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is big, bold and colourful. More importantly, it is the first Samsung phone to offer a dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz.

The Galaxy S20 line introduces the fastest refresh rate for a Samsung phone, delivering smoother scrolling and better visuals, especially for games and movies. But it was a feature you had to adjust manually. On the Note 20 Ultra, the refresh rate automatically adjusts based on the content on the screen, which should save battery life.
When using the screen, I found scrolling in Chrome to be extremely smooth and fast when Responsive Mode is on. You can always manually select 60Hz if you want to save every last drop of juice.
I also tried out the game Dead Trigger 2, which is one of the titles optimized for the 120Hz panel. The game felt smooth and very responsive as I ran around, shooting at zombies and traversing dark corridors.
The Note 20 Ultra’s panel is extremely bright and easy to read in direct sunlight. The screen scored a fairly high 662 nits on our light meter, which is good enough, but not quite as high as the iPhone 11 Pro’s 752 nits.

The Note 20 Ultra outdoes Apple in terms of accuracy, registering a Delta-E score of 0.24 compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 0.28 (where 0 is perfect).
Some owners of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are complaining that the screen shows a green tint when the brightness is reduced. Our review unit didn’t have this problem. We’ve reached out to Samsung, but they have no comment at this time.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has three rear cameras and a laser autofocus sensor, which should address one of our major complaints about the Galaxy S20 Ultra and its focus issues.
The camera array of the phablet starts with a 108MP wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture and 120-degree field of view and is joined by a 12MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2. The 12MP telephoto lens provides 5x optical zoom and 50x Super Resolution Zoom.

I tired this tree as a subject with the powerful SpaceZoom on the Note 20 Ultra. As you can see in the gallery below, the results look fairly sharp up to 10x zoom, but 20x and especially 50x shots are blurry. Still, it’s better than what you currently get from the iPhone.
The 108-megapixel camera option may sound excessive, but it can be useful if you want the freedom to crop a photo. Just make sure you have enough ambient light, as this setting is best used outdoors.
As you can see in this photo of Halloween decorations, I can add just a few straw men, a ghost, and a witch, and you can still get a lot of detail. There is just a little noise in the frame.
The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s night mode is good, but not as bright or as colorful as the iPhone 11 Pro. You can see the difference in this photo of a fruit basket taken in near-total darkness. You can make several lemons and apples, as well as just one basket.

The Note 20 Ultra scored better than the iPhone 11 Pro in this estimation of Flowers. The Note 20 Ultra’s shot is closer to reality, with petals looking more red than purple, and white balance is better. However, the iPhone shot blurs the background less.
