LG’s mobile unit is often the company’s worst division, so much so that the company has abandoned its annual release cycle and delayed its flagship phones. January 2018 was HTC’s worst month in more than a decade, until February reported even worse numbers. Google makes the best Android phone, but it doesn’t have or can’t build a competitive distribution and marketing chain, and many people can’t afford the phone.

On the other side of the mobile aisle, Apple makes a compelling smartphone that supports global distribution and marketing, but users are largely reluctant to switch between ecosystems; partisanship has taken over the phone market.
So Android users are left looking for a high-end device with Samsung having enough smartphones and marketing/promotional operations that they can put in every store, every TV ad and commercial. The company’s new flagship, the Galaxy S9, has entered a market that hasn’t given Samsung much reason to push itself, and the S9 is an undisputed victory lap over its flagship version.
Samsung should be commended for fixing the Galaxy S8’s biggest flaw, the placement of the fingerprint reader; otherwise, it’s a specific hit version. It’s basically a Galaxy S8 with a new SoC, more RAM (on the S9+) and a new camera. However, we have many interesting things to see: it is one of the first smartphones with a variable aperture camera and the first with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, the SoC that will dominate the high-end Android market in 2018.
The Galaxy S8 was a major design revolution for Samsung. The company ditched the Galaxy S7’s hardware navigation buttons and front-facing fingerprint reader in favor of a slimmer design with on-screen navigation buttons and a rear-facing fingerprint reader. For the Galaxy S9, Samsung is keeping this basic design. (We’re looking at the larger S9+, but most of this applies to the smaller S9 as well. The only differences with the S9 are the screen size, the lack of the S9’s secondary telephoto lens, and the fact that the S9 only has 4GB of RAM.)

The phone remains mostly glass. A panel of Gorilla Glass 5 stretches across the front above the incredibly tall 6.2-inch display, curving at the left and right corners to meet the aluminum bezels. The design is mirrored on the back and also has glass that curves around the long edges of the phone. Glass is a fingerprint magnet; the rear glass feels particularly greasy after light handling. The fragile all-glass body is still a disappointment. Even though the industry is moving towards glass, companies like Google and OnePlus are still putting extra effort into making aluminum work, and fingerprint-resistant backs feel better than those glass phones. (The downside to aluminum is that you don’t get wireless charging.)
If you’ve never used a modern slim phone, don’t let the “6.2-inch” display on the spec sheet scare you. The 18.5:9 aspect ratio means that the phone’s screen is taller than older 16:9 screens, which greatly increases the diagonal screen size. The phone card is actually the same size as the old 5.5-inch 16:9 phone, with more screen.
The New Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9 Plus Is Astonishing
Samsung is the king of OLED production, so of course the S9+’s 2960×1440 display looks great. After dealing with the glossy LG OLED screens of the Pixel 2 XL and the LG V30, it’s refreshing. The screen isn’t bright, it’s also one of the brightest on the market, although the wide brightness range means it can be one of the darkest on the market when you’re in the dark.
Small adjustments have been made to the Galaxy S8 case. Surprisingly, our S9+ review unit is slightly thicker and heavier than last year, going from 8.1mm to 8.5mm in thickness and up from 173g to 189g. When you first pick up the S9+, the weight hits you; it weighs more than most other phones on the market (except the iPhone 8 Plus). Unfortunately, the S9 doesn’t pack a bigger battery than the Galaxy S8, so there aren’t any elements that add weight and thickness.
The new S9 features a stereo speaker setup, with the earpiece doing double duty as a silent call speaker and higher-end multimedia speaker, along with a regular speaker on the bottom. It really is a significant improvement over the old speakers; makes video and game sound louder, better quality and more immersive. The headphone/bottom speaker combo is a great design decision, as two front-facing speakers (like the Google Pixel 2 line) take up too much space on the front of the phone.
The Samsung scam remains. The screen is still curved for no reason and distorts the sides of apps. The Bixby voice assistant is still on the left side of the phone with a physical hardware button. Bixby hasn’t changed much since our full review back in August; it’s slow and not particularly useful, and it doesn’t work with many programs. The Bixby button can’t be reset via normal OS settings, and it’s easy to accidentally press it. There are several “Bixby remapper” apps on the Play Store and they work, but without official Samsung support, they’re usually broken or delayed.
