Samsung Galaxy S5 Android Update – It is unlikely that Samsung’s 2014 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S5, will receive the Android 7.0 Nougat or Android O update. If you want a version higher than Android Marshmallow 6.0, you will have to take matters into your own hands. We’ll guide you step-by-step on how to make sure you get these Nougat features and future updates on your Galaxy S5.
Samsung has officially stopped providing support for the Galaxy S5. The S5 was introduced in early 2014 and now has 2 and soon 3 (long awaited Samsung Galaxy S8) successors. If you have already received the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, unfortunately this will be your last update. You will no longer receive any software updates from Samsung, which means that potential future security risks will not be patched. You have the option to manually update your phone – but there are no glitches and it’s surprisingly quick.

The first thing you should do is create a backup. In most cases, your contacts will already be synced through your Google account. If you are one of the many WhatsApp users, you can easily backup them to Google Drive (a tutorial on how to backup your Galaxy S5 is here). You can back up your photos on your computer or secure them through the cloud. If you’ve configured any apps, you’ll need to configure them later, as most app developers don’t use Google’s backup feature.

Theoretically, WhatsApp and your photos should not be affected, although it is always better to be on the safe side and make a proper backup.
Unfortunately, you need a computer running Windows to use the tools we need for this. When we tested this method, we used a Virtualbox running Windows 10 and everything worked fine. You need Samsung Driver for Windows PC and Virtualbox Odinin. After downloading the Samsung Driver, install it, unpack Odin and launch the application.
Boot your Galaxy S5 into Odin mode. To do this, turn it off, then when you turn it back on press the lower half of the house, power and volume rocker. Confirm the warning on the screen by pressing the volume up button. Connect your S5 to your computer and check if they can communicate with each other. To do this, go to Log in Odin and click “Added!!” displayed and check if the device appears in the interface list.
If you have problems with this step, you should switch to the ADB Driver Installer and follow the instructions there.

Now you want to replace the recovery software with TeamWin’s custom recovery software. Custom recovery allows you to interact with parts of your smartphone. This is very important for the next steps where we change the Android system and install system apps like Google Apps.
Download the available .tar file of the TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP Recovery) for the US Version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 (Note: it is not currently available for the AT&T branded S5 (g900a)). Click on AP in Odin and select this .tar file from the download directory. Click Start to flash the new recovery.
Once the process is complete, you need to reboot into recovery mode. If you don’t, the recovery will automatically replace the TWRP recovery you installed on your Galaxy S5. To boot into recovery mode, press and hold the home button and the volume down button. Identify the first alert. Go to the Mount section and make sure you can see the Galaxy S5 files on your computer.
After installing the custom recovery we can continue the main part and install Android Nougat on our Galaxy S5. The appropriate firmware can be found on the Lineage OS (formerly CyanogenMod) download page. You need to click on the menu on the top left and select the S5 version that works for you because it is different for each carrier. In the Lineage OS build column, you can get ZIP files containing pseudo-snapshots of Lineage 13 or Nightly Builds for Lineage 14.1. The former is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, so it is not very new and stable. The latter is based on Android 7.1 Nougat and is updated almost daily, although they are not yet fully developed.

For Play Store and Google services, you will need another ZIP file with Google Apps. The easiest way to do this is to use Opengapps.org. Download ARM for your Android version. We recommend a better looking calendar and micropack for Gmail. But the Pico image is also good enough.
As mentioned earlier, your app settings will be lost, but your data and photos will not be affected as they are on the internal storage.
You need to repeat the initial setup of your device because you have lost all your app and phone settings. You are asked to sign in again with your Google account and reinstall any apps you previously had. On the plus side, you can still enjoy all the updates for your Galaxy S5 long after Samsung stops offering them. Future updates will come automatically to your phone and there is no need for this complicated process to install them.

I was surprised that CM 14.1 supports all the relevant features of the Galaxy S5. Problems that often occur with camera quality are not reproduced. I really like the S5’s camera thanks to the additional optimization and exposure control features.
Overall, the S5 feels faster thanks to the new firmware, and if you buy a new battery for $15, your phone should last at least a year.
