Before its launch, the smartphone was the favorite of the rumors, working in full force to release the leaks. Now that the phone has been launched, people, including us, continue to talk about how amazing the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is with its performance and features. What are these features we are talking about? Before publishing this Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra review, we used the device for two full weeks. Does the phone really get the “Ultra” coat? Or just another update that is redundant. First, at a price tag of Rs 1, 05, 990, is this a potential killer of the iPhone 12 Pro Max? Here is our review of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

There is a lot to talk about the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. And it should be because it’s the company’s flagship smartphone that packs the latest and greatest combination of hardware and software available. To begin with, let’s look at the general aesthetics of the phone.

Before, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra may look like its predecessor. Featuring an Infinity-O hole-punch that’s great even for big hands. The S21 Ultra’s display is 6.8-inches long, which is 0.1-inches smaller than the previous one. Adding to the immersive experience is a bright and vibrant ear-to-ear information display. On my recent trip to Triund, where I also used the phone as my daily driver, I thoroughly enjoyed using the Galaxy S21 Ultra for streaming and content creation (more on that in the camera section of the review).
The Dynamic AMOLED screen comes with a peak brightness of 1500 nits, which is more than bright enough for use in direct sunlight. The screen supports HDR10+, which means you get vivid colors and contrast when viewing content on the screen. It also has a 120Hz refresh rate screen. Here are two small-but-big improvements that Samsung has made – 120Hz in WQHD+ resolution, and an improved refresh rate screen.
Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you can use the S21 Ultra 5G display in high resolution and support a higher refresh rate. I personally use the phone in FHD + resolution and 120Hz all the time to have some battery life but if you are someone who wants to use the display to its full potential, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has got you covered. The display refresh rate is also automatic, meaning it automatically changes the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the activity on the screen. I didn’t mind the trouble and the whole experience was great.
When you turn the phone around, you will see how innovative the design is. Samsung went back to the drawing board and gave the Galaxy S21 Ultra a major design update. First things first, Phantom Black color. We’ll just put it out there that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has the best “Black” color on any smartphone. The back panel has a matte finish, which feels great in the hand while keeping fingerprints at bay.

What’s even better is the design of the camera module that makes the phone look premium from a distance. Samsung has integrated the camera module into the phone frame, which looks very unique. At 225 grams, the phone tends to feel bulky but we think the weight distribution is spot on. I use the phone without a case to cover it with the use of a beautiful color and design, and that would be a shame. I also dropped the phone more than 3 times but no chip or crack. You can tell Corning Gorilla Glass Victus does its job here.
It also has IP68 certification for water, dust resistance and dual speaker setup. The speakers are loud and clear. Like most flagships, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the S21 Ultra.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has the most advanced camera system you can find on a smartphone to date. It has an advanced 108 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultrawide sensor, and two telephoto lenses – 10MP f/2.4 with 3x optical zoom, and 10MP f/4.9 with 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom.
The compactness of the camera is not as powerful on paper as it delivers in the real world too. The improved Samsung 108MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor takes great photos. Images captured using the main sensor deliver rich, vibrant colors and detailed information. Its dynamic range and diversity is also impressive. I also like the camera performance in low light. In night mode, the camera manages to capture good details in the shadows without exposing the light. Samsung also fixed the focus issues the S20 Ultra was having with Laser Autofocus. The ultrawide camera is also very good. Yes, there is a bit of distortion around the edges but that’s the case with most wide-angle shooters. However, the colors are accurate and the temperature is consistent with that of the primary sensor.

The two telephoto lenses are more than just gimmicks. Both lenses together can achieve 100x zoom. I am very pleased with the overall performance of the two lenses. If you want better and more useful images, try zooming to 30x. Anything else will cause loss of information and sound. That being said, 100x zoom is no longer a gimmick. Depending on what you are shooting and how far away the subject is, the camera hardware, along with the software, get the best possible results in the right lighting.
I shot the moon several times during my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra review and the results blew me away every time. Samsung uses AI software tricks to complement the hardware and deliver better results. Key features like in-camera focus tracking and Optical Image Stabilization help focus faster, especially when zooming into objects.
For selfies, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40MP front camera. The overall images are very sharp and detailed as expected. The colors are still close to real and so there is no skin softening. Samsung asks you after setup whether you want “natural” or “bright” selfies, which I think is a nice touch. Image mode offers good mouth detection and a variety of modes. It imitates the iPhone’s low-key and high-key mono sound. People on Twitter voted the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s photo mode against the iPhone 12’s 12MP selfie. How does it stack up against the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro? In terms of color and general specifications, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is close to the iPhone. While the iPhone 12’s colors are closer to reality, the Galaxy S21 Ultra captures more vivid images without overpowering photos. Night mode performance is also pretty good but the Galaxy S21 Ultra takes the crown here for offering Night Mode support across all four sensors. During our Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra review, we played many games like Call of Duty, Asphalt 9, etc. There is no lag even on the highest possible setting. Surprisingly, the device doesn’t get too hot during gaming and it only gets hot in the hand. It was when we recorded some videos that the upper part near the camera module got a little hot.
Battery life is also very impressive.
