But the Z Fold 3 is too expensive for most consumers, while the Z Flip 3 doesn’t offer the same robust user experience as Samsung’s Note and Ultra products.
If you’re on the hunt for a new smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is far from the only ultra-high-end option on the market right now. There is a large list of premium-level competitors, including the OPPO Find X3 Pro, Sony Xperia 1 III and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. So does the phone still stand as a solid buy half a year later? Let’s break down the good and the bad in this Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra review review.

We gave the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 4.5/5 stars and an Editors’ Choice award, so it’s no surprise that the phone is still holding up so well six months later. The mobile industry may be moving fast, but it’s certainly not fast enough to leave flagship Samsung in the dust.

I could go on writing paragraphs about the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s excellent 120Hz AMOLED display, its smooth performance (for the Snapdragon and Exynos variants), or its IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, but these are unchanged from our initial review and are still there. with the best in the business. In fact, the entire hardware package is quite excellent for an ultra-premium smartphone. The Galaxy S21 Ultra almost has that if you want it.
There’s a dual SIM option, 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave support, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus screen protection, the latest Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, wireless and reverse charging, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and more. Even six months from now, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive package on the market.
Of course, there are no strong competitors in the market, and some phones stand out with their under-screen cameras, faster charging features and better sound settings. But Samsung’s flagship offering brings you the most important features as well as other brands. This is good news for consumers who have generally been waiting for the next-generation Note, Samsung’s tech flagship. Although the Galaxy S21 Ultra is not a replacement for Note fans, it is definitely a phone designed with power users in mind. The phone works fine even with the S Pen stylus, but without a case there’s nowhere to store it safely.
As we noted in our Galaxy S21 Ultra review, One UI is uniquely Samsung. The interface is heavily skinned and offers a number of features that go beyond the basic Android experience. It’s not for purists, but these extras are what make One UI a haven for power users who can master the additional tools and options. I think Samsung’s Edge panels are a great multitasking tool, and I’m a big fan of the camera’s shooting options. Samsung is also making progress on Dex integration and cloud storage for enterprise users.

A UI has a problem or two. Ads inserted into internal apps are an annoyance that we hope will be resolved before the end of 2021, as a major settings overhaul is approaching. But overall, One UI is one of the best Android skins on the market.
Equally important, Samsung now has one of the best refresh promises in the industry. The company is promising three years of Android version updates for all of its latest smartphones, not just the S21 series. This comes with four years of security updates, keeping the S21 Ultra up to date until 2025. This greatly increases the long-term value proposition of the phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra easily lasts all day with a built-in 5,000mAh battery; usually two days if you only need light workloads. Battery life for months is as good as the first day. Even when I was shooting for several hours, my phone never went out during the afternoon hours.
Whether you need your phone for work or play, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has you covered. You can also change the phone’s 120Hz adaptive display mode and power output settings at any time if you want the phone to last longer between charges.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: Living Up To The Specs
On the way with a 1/1.33-inch 108 MP main sensor, 3x telephoto, 10x periscope and ultra-wide cameras, the Galaxy S21 Ultra remains one of the most powerful photography suites on the market right now. With 8K, 4K 60fps and 960fps slow-motion video capabilities and many other software features such as Director’s View and Single Take, the S21 Ultra satisfies even the most demanding camera users.
However, it’s not completely perfect. Colors can still be a bit saturated compared to the best in the industry, and you’ll occasionally see hints of heavy processing when you examine some images more closely. Moreover, the camera produces impressive and very stable results, from portraits to selfies, from night shots to long-distance zooms.
Since its launch, we’ve reviewed the Galaxy S21 Ultra across nearly all of the best camera phones on the market, and it consistently comes out on top, if not always with the best photos, certainly due to its incredible versatility. It surpasses other premium smartphones in our mid-2021 mega camera lineup to become one of the best camera phones to buy this year. Of course, Samsung phones are never completely free of controversy. The lack of a microSD card expansion slot, lack of a phone jack, and lack of a charger in the box will definitely turn off a potential customer or two. But during my time with the phone, I encountered a few other minor flaws that overshadow one of the best phones money can buy.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Long Term Review: Is It Worth It A Year Later?
While similar in hardware to last year’s models, Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy S21 series with a sleeker camera housing and a simpler “Contour Cut” look. While this works for the regular S21 and S21 Plus, I’m less convinced about the size and appearance of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
At 227g and 8.9mm thick (~12mm if you include the camera housing), the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a heavy smartphone. Granted, that weight includes a massive 5,000mAh battery, wireless charging, mmWave 5G, and plenty of other tech features, so there’s bound to be some trade-offs. Samsung managed to make the phone 2 mm thinner than the S20 Ultra, but this is still not what I would call ergonomic and remains a noticeable weight in your pocket.
However, the design is definitely not bad. It’s still definitely better than the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and its palm-shaped edges. But after playing around with the sleek Sony Xperia 1 III (186g) and slim OPPO Find If you’re spending money on a fashion statement, look elsewhere.
While 25W wired and 15W wireless charging are a bit slow by modern standards, prioritizing low temperatures over high charging speeds is a sensible decision for long-term battery health. I wouldn’t recommend buying a 100W phone instead.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review
Still, charging the phone’s 5,000 mAh battery takes just over 70 minutes with a 25W charger, and just over 90 minutes with an 18W charger. Wireless charging is even slower, making it only suitable for charging throughout the day.
While there are laudable reasons for dropping the onboard charger, Samsung has further complicated the issue by requiring a USB Power Delivery PPS-compatible charger to increase the phone’s 25W wired charging capability. Choose Standard USB Power Delivery or another plug-in and you’ll be fine with 18W or less. Not having a charger in the box increases the chance of customers purchasing the wrong plug. Samsung offers compatible chargers for as little as $20, but there’s stiff competition from third-party alternatives.
My one minor complaint is about the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s speakers. They offer plenty of sound, good stereo projection, and sufficient volume for watching TV shows. But there’s little to notice when it comes to sound. It’s not that flashy, but it’s not the flashy screen you’d expect from a phone at this price.
I think this is because the bottom speaker is responsible for most of the volume and bass. The top speaker, meanwhile, has more weight and appears to be there mostly to signal stereo balance. There are some tricks to this, and although it’s mostly well hidden, you’ll notice a little something when you listen to your favorite songs.
