The king of big and powerful phones is back for another generation, but is the new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 still the phablet to beat?
Samsung Galaxy Note Cell Phone
The Note series was the first to launch a large-screen smartphone in 2011, and over the past seven years, it’s gotten bigger and more feature-rich with each new release. While the Galaxy S9 series is Samsung’s flagship phone for the average person, the Note 9 is a powerhouse for those whose answer to the question “Can I do this on my phone” is always yes?

The Note 9’s screen is large — at 6.4 inches, 0.1 inch larger than the previous model — but it’s actually only slightly larger than the Galaxy S9+’s built-in screen.
Put the new phone next to the Note 8 and you’ll notice the difference until you look a little closer.
The frames are a little smaller and the aluminum strip around the sides is a little more prominent. The dual camera system now has its place behind the glass and the fingerprint scanner has been moved from the camera below them. It’s a small change, but it makes a big difference in usability.
With bright, vibrant colors, deep blacks and great viewing angles, the screen is the best you can get in a smartphone. The Note has always been Samsung’s showcase for the best in display technology.

However, the large screen has its drawbacks as it makes the Note 9 very difficult to operate without two hands. If any phone could use a ring on the back, this is it. Samsung should have included a wristband like the ones that came with phones in the early 2000s. It can be placed next to the headphone jack.

Like the Galaxy S9, the Note 9 has a different processor depending on where you buy it. The European model has Samsung’s Exynos 9810 chip and was the tested version, while the North American model has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, which is used in the OnePlus 6 and other high-end phones released in 2018. Performance should be similar between the two models. versions, although there may be deviations in extremes.
Hands On With Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 And Note 10+ Android Phones
The Note 9 is arguably the best Android performer on the market and can sustain peak performance for longer without overheating, something that was very evident in Shadowgun Legends compared to the Pixel 2XL or OnePlus 6.
It performed surprisingly well as a desktop using Samsung’s DeX system, connecting the phone to the monitor via a standard USB-C to HDMI cable. Viewed on a 1080p monitor, Chrome handles very large and demanding web applications better than most budget PCs.
Battery life was good, but somewhat disappointing given the large 4,000mAh battery that matches the performance of the Galaxy S9 Plus, which has a 12.5% smaller battery. With the screen set to the maximum QHD+ resolution, the battery lasts an average of 25 hours between charges, or an hour longer with the FHD+ screen resolution.
That’s while using the Note 9 as its primary device with always-on display enabled, browsing and using apps for five hours with over a hundred notifications, reading comics on Marvel Unlimited for 60 minutes, and listening to about five I used to watch music through. Bluetooth headphones.

In comparison, Huawei’s 6-inch Mate 10 Pro can last two full days between charges under similar conditions. It’s possible that the North American version of the Note 9 with a Qualcomm processor will have longer battery life.
The Note 9 runs Samsung’s latest modified version of Android called Samsung Experience 9.5. Instead of the recently released Android 9 Pie, it’s based on Android 8.1 Oreo, which is disappointing but not entirely unexpected.
It looks and feels similar to the Note 8 or Galaxy S9 Plus with Samsung Experience 9. There are several useful additions for the pen and the large screen, such as Edge pop-up apps, advanced split-screen multitasking, and the ability to pop up a launcher app as Windows on top of others — all features found in the Note 8.
Overall, the Note 9’s software feels like Samsung’s best-optimized software yet, with smoother performance across the board. It’s not quite as fast as the OnePlus 6 or Google’s Pixel 2 XL, but Samsung seems to have done a better job of limiting lag throughout the system.

The dual camera system on the back is the same as the one on the Galaxy S9 Plus. Two 12-megapixel cameras, one wide-angle with dual aperture and the other a 2x telephoto camera.
The Note 9 has an AI scene optimization system for photos that does a good job of detecting objects like food and plants, but often produces oversaturated images that look like they’ve been put through Instagram filters. I turned it off and got better results. The AI is also supposed to detect when the image is blurry or the subject’s eyes are closed, but no matter how many blinkers I got from friends, I couldn’t get it to alert me.
Other than the weak AI elements, the camera is fantastic and captures a lot of detail even with the telephoto lens and in different lighting conditions. Low-light performance was also excellent, as was the 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Another addition is the Bluetooth-enabled S Pen, which uses a supercapacitor to control the S Pen from the phone for up to 30 minutes or more. Put the S Pen back into the body to fully charge in 40 seconds.
In addition to the usual scribbling on the screen, you can now press a button to take actions like taking a photo in the camera app, pausing music, or presenting the next slide in PowerPoint. Hold the button and you can also run the program.
It didn’t seem very useful to me, but I know this feature has been on the wish list of Note users for a while.

If you need your phone to do just about anything, the Note 9 is it. It has everything and the kitchen sink is wrapped in the enormous power of the phone.
As you might expect, this comes with a few trade-offs, the biggest of which is its sheer size, which makes it heavy in the pocket and on the handle. It also costs a lot, though not as much as Apple’s much smaller iPhone X.
The camera is great, the screen is amazing, the stylus is useful, and the plethora of features won’t bother you if you don’t use them all. You can play at maximum performance for longer than other phones and even use it as a lightweight desktop when connected to a monitor.
Goodbye Samsung Galaxy Note, Hello S22 Ultra
Battery life is good, but given the size of the cell, it should be better after the new Android 9 Pie release, but running last year’s 8.1 Oreo isn’t ideal.
The Note 9 isn’t really that different from the Note 8, but it’s a big step up from the older models. Note fans should be happy.
