The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra costs $1,199, which is $200 less than its predecessor. On paper, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs both phones with a retail price of $1,299.

New doesn’t always mean better. I prefer the design of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra over the Galaxy S21 Ultra. That’s because the Note 20 is ultra-thin, light, and small. The S21 Ultra’s camera hump integrates better with the back of the phone thanks to Samsung’s contoured design, but I’d rather hold and use the Note 20 Ultra.
The S21 Ultra is also available in other colors including Phantom Silver and Phantom Black, as well as Phantom Navy, Phantom Titanium and Phantom Brown via Samsung.com. The Note 20 Ultra is only available in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, and Mystic White.
If you want to use an S Pen then the Note 20 Ultra is the obvious choice as there is no way to attach the S Pen to the S21 Ultra unless you grab a case. And it adds even more bulk to a thick device.

The displays on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra are fairly similar, with both phones sporting Dynamic AMOLED displays that scale from 10Hz to 120Hz for smooth performance. The Note 20 Ultra’s 6.9-inch screen is only slightly larger than the 6.8-inch on the S21 Ultra.
Both screens are sharp and brightly colored with extremely wide viewing angles, but the S21 Ultra leads with its higher average brightness of 821 nits. The Note 20 Ultra scored 662 nits in our lab.
However, the Note 20 Ultra’s screen was a bit more colorful, displaying 86.1% of the DCI-P3 color space compared to 81.4% on the S21 Ultra. The Note 21 Ultra’s panel also proved slightly more accurate, achieving a Delta-E of 0.24 (0 is perfect); The S21 Ultra scored 0.35.

The S21 Ultra produces a brighter image of a fruit with this skin, so that oranges in particular appear more lively. The apple is almost too light in the S21 Ultra’s shot as the skin loses some of its sharpness compared to the Note 20 Ultra, but overall the S21 Ultra delivers a more pleasing photo.

For this photo, I used night mode on both phones, lit only by a nearby street lamp. It’s not a dramatic difference, but I appreciate that the sky looks brighter and the tree on the right looks a bit sharper and has more contrast in the foreground. Overall, though, both phones perform quite well, especially on icy feet.
In this photo of a little lucky bamboo plant, I actually prefer the Note 20 Ultra photo because it’s light streaming through the window. Bright spots on the top of the leaves make the shot even more impressive. The picture of the S21 Ultra is completely consistent.
This is where the Note 20 Ultra really starts to fall behind. This portrait looks completely overdone compared to the S21 Ultra. It looks like the whole scene is covered with a white fog or film. While the S21 Ultra captures the more accurate dark blue of my jacket better; My face also has a warmer tone than the note taking.
At 10x zoom, the Galaxy S21 Ultra delivers more detail and more accurate shading in this shot of a tree with some bird and squirrel feeding spots. The Note 20 Ultra struggles with barks and the feeder on the top left of the frame is almost completely lost at the edges.

Once we get to 50x zoom, it’s no longer a competition. The Note 20 Ultra’s photo is so blurry and blurry that it looks like an impressionist painting. Both bark and feeding sites can be seen very clearly in the S21 Ultra photo.

However, for ultra gamers, the Galaxy S21 could be a better choice as it scores significantly better on the 3DMark Wildlife graphics test. It averaged 33 frames per second, while the Note 20 Ultra only managed 24.9 fps.
Both the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra last through a full day on one charge, especially if you use the 60Hz display mode on both phones. But the S21 Ultra has longer endurance overall.
In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, which includes continuous web browsing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Galaxy S21 Ultra lasted an impressive 11 hours and 25 minutes in 60Hz screen mode. That’s good enough to land this device on our list of the best cell phone battery life. With the display’s adaptive mode activated, which reaches up to 120 Hz, the runtime dropped to a consistently good 10:07.
