Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Phone – The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is Samsung’s latest superphone of 2020, packed with technology – but it’s landed at a time when the budget is stretched, and asking more than £1,000 for a smartphone seems out of touch.
Priced at £1,179, this beast is the top of the South Korean company’s 2020 smartphone line-up, packing in everything but the kitchen sink.

Design-wise, it is very similar to the previous Note 10+. The front is all screen, while the back is glass with a thin metal strip ending the edges and flat sides at the top and bottom. It is attractive and minimal design. The 6.9-inch QHD+ Amoled display is impressive and has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, matching or bettering competitors like the OnePlus 8 Pro.

The huge camera housing on the back of the phone is very popular. It packs three cameras, including a 108-megapixel standard (wide) camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, and again takes out about half the thickness of the phone’s main body. It is big, bold and incredibly attractive in bronze color.
And the tempered glass is Samsung’s best. Considering the size of the phone, it hides fingerprints and offers a surprisingly large case. I found it easier to hold than the similarly sized Galaxy S20 Ultra. But the Note 20 Ultra is a huge phone and you need two hands to use it. Checking messages and answering calls was about the only thing I could safely manage with one hand — anything that required holding the phone.

The Note 20 Ultra is powered by Samsung’s latest Exynos 990 processor in Europe, the same one used in the S20 Ultra. In the US it has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+ instead. Both versions come with 12 GB of RAM.
The Note 20 Ultra performed essentially like the S20 Ultra, meaning it felt fast and powerful, handling games and other intensive tasks without breaking a sweat.
Battery life was disappointing compared to the S20 Ultra’s 38 hours or competitors like the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 32 hours. The Note 20 Ultra managed just under 30 hours between charges with the screen on and just over four hours during that time.

During the test, the phone spent about three hours on 5G, the rest on wifi, with the screen set to the default 120Hz variable refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. On heavy usage days, spending most of the day outdoors on 5G and using the camera heavily, the Note 20 Ultra got at least 15% left and still got through the day. While the battery life isn’t class-leading, it will get you through a day without a hitch.
The Note 20 Ultra charged very quickly with the included power adapter, reaching 100% in less than 70 minutes, on par with the S20 Ultra and faster than the OnePlus 8 Pro. Fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging are also available.
Samsung declined to provide an estimate of expected battery life on the Note 20 Ultra, which is typically 500 full charge cycles, while other rechargeable batteries expect at least 80% capacity. The device can usually be repaired and the battery can be replaced at authorized service centers. A battery replacement is expected to cost over £100, while the screens retail for £290.
Samsung declined to comment on the use of recycled materials in the Note 20 Ultra, but offers trade-in and recycling programs for older devices.

The Note 20 Ultra runs Samsung’s latest Android 10 with One UI 2.5. It’s very similar to what’s on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but adds some software features to the S Pen like handwriting recognition, various screenwriting and scripting tools, translation and gesture support.
The improved S Pen gestures — where you wave the stylus like a magic wand — are a bit bland, but using the stylus button as a camera remote is useful.
Samsung has expanded its software partnership with Microsoft. This includes mirroring apps from your phone to your PC and supporting Microsoft’s new Xbox game streaming service, which is part of the popular Game Pass Ultimate subscription, making the Note 20 Ultra one of the first smartphones to do so.

Overall, One UI 2.5 works well and is one of the best custom Android versions available, although it will be outdated soon, Android 11 is going to be released by Google in the near future. Samsung promises to support three years of major Android updates and monthly security patches, which is good for an Android device, but pales in comparison to Apple’s five years of support for its phones.

The rear camera system of the Note 20 Ultra is similar to that of the Galaxy S20 Ultra and works well. The main 108MP wide-angle camera is excellent, capable of taking some cracking photos in good to medium light. Low-light performance has also improved significantly, with Samsung’s Night Mode catching up with rivals from Google and Huawei.
The 12MP ultra-wide camera is also one of the best on the phone, but a step up from the S20 Ultra is the new 12MP 5x telephoto camera. That extra optical zoom makes a real difference in how close you can get to objects, taking great photos at the original 5x zoom and good photos at 10x zoom. It extends up to 50x zoom, but anything beyond 20x isn’t fantastic. If you have steady hands, the lighting is good, and your subject is completely still, you can get some good photos with the zoom, but it takes some work and luck.

Video resolution of up to 8K is also excellent, with a variety of shooting options, smooth zoom and microphone recording settings that do a much better job than most Android devices. The 10-megapixel selfie camera is also one of the best on the market.
Overall, the camera on the Note 20 Ultra rivals the best in the business, making the Galaxy S20 Ultra one of Samsung’s best.

In comparison, the smaller Galaxy Note 20 costs £949, the Galaxy S20 Ultra £1,199, the Galaxy Z Flip £1,300, the OnePlus 8 Pro £799 and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max £1,149.
The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is Samsung’s best phone yet, but it’s launched at a time when expensive superphones seem like fancy innards, not necessities.
The price is £2,000 higher than the best smartphones online.
The S Pen is still a powerful tool for those looking for a stylus. Note fans will rejoice. Microsoft’s Windows 10 extensions are good and will only get better. The camera is very good. The phone looks smooth and works well. It has a great screen, but those who just want a bigger screen will be better served by cheaper phones.
