Samsung Galaxy A12 Gsm Arena – Our Galaxy A12 review unit runs Android 10 with Samsung One UI 2.5. The lack of Android 11 with One UI 3.0 on the A12 is a little disappointing, but hopefully it will be updated eventually.
A UI is pretty consistent between phones and releases, so starting with 2.5 or so, there’s not much missing from the A12. The lock screen is a familiar look with a few shortcuts in the bottom corner and notification icons below the clock. This is a phone with an LCD display and does not support always-on display.

For unlocking, the most obvious choice is the side-mounted fingerprint sensor. A reasonable number of taps are required to set up both the left index and right thumb controls and it works well.

As with other applications, just by keeping the phone in your pocket you run the risk of triggering the sensor with any skin contact, resulting in the sensor not working after the phone is locked and you take it out to use it. If you suffer from this more often than you’d like, you can activate the sensor with just the press of a button – otherwise, there’s no need to click.
Alternatively, there is facial recognition. It’s camera-only, no 3D face scanning, but it still offers a convenient (if not so reliable) way to get to the home screen.
The basics of the user interface are the same as any other Samsung phone from the past few years.
There’s fingerprint scanning, which you can choose during the initial setup process or later. System-wide dark mode is also a real deal.

What’s missing from the A12, like other lower-end Galaxies, are edge panels. Otherwise, the software package is similar to other Samsung phones, with Samsung’s own Gallery app, file manager and browser. An FM radio app is also included, although you’ll need headphones to act as an antenna – some phones have a built-in FM antenna.
Inside the Galaxy A12 is a discreet Mediatek Helio P35 chipset. Its octa-core processor uses only Cortex-A53 cores, four of which are clocked up to 2.35 GHz and the other four – limited to 1.8 GHz. Smaller Snapdragon 450-equipped Galaxies like the A02s/M02s are limited to 1.8GHz on all 8 cores.
The PowerVR GE8320 GPU used in the Helio P35 is also found in other Helios – such as the G25 and G35 – and subsequently in quite a few budget-oriented devices.

The modest nature of the Galaxy A12 chips is quickly apparent in Geekbench, where it lags behind in the charts. For context, we added Nokia 2.4 to make the A12 a little better. Possible competitors like Realme 7 or Redmi 9/9T are very powerful and even Realme 7i and Poco M3 are comfortably ahead.
This remains the case on Antutu, where the Poco M3 and Realme 7i show 70% higher numbers than the A12.
The GPU is back a bit, helped by the forgiving 720p display resolution. In the GFXBench screen tests, the Galaxy A12 managed to climb to the middle of the charts and even beat the Poco M3 in frames per second – but not the Realme 7i.
Looking at the Galaxy A12’s specs, we knew we weren’t expecting much from it in terms of specs, so the lackluster results here aren’t surprising. It’s not just metrics. We also noticed occasional juddering during normal use. All in all, if you’re looking for higher performance or better security in the future, the Galaxy A12 might not be a good choice. The Galaxy A12 is Samsung’s answer to the Redmi and Realms of the world – a budget-savvy offering that tries to fit as much phone as possible into a low price. So how does it stack up against the competition?

The first thing that comes to mind is Redmi Note 9, which is very close in price. You get slightly better battery life than the Redmi, and slightly faster charging and a higher-resolution display – although that doesn’t seem to make the difference in itself. Camera performance is generally very similar, so that doesn’t help either. However, Redmi Note 9 has a more powerful chipset and this fact alone is enough to beat Redmi.
Not exactly Xiaomi, but something like Xiaomi, the Poco M3 is another viable option, and it’s even cheaper than the A12. For your dollar you get a FullHD display and more RAM, as well as stereo speakers, longer battery life and better performance. However, the Galaxy has one super-wide camera on the front.
The Realme 7 (without 5G) is 15% more expensive than the Galaxy A12, but with its 90Hz FullHD display, more powerful chipset and faster charging (comparatively longer battery life to boot), we think it can justify the premium. .
The Moto G9 Power is on par with the Galaxy in some areas, and the Power moniker really means one thing – it’s in our top 3 for battery life. It comfortably outlasts A12 and more powerful chipsets. The higher resolution and overall better main camera is in the Moto’s favor, but the Galaxy counters by far more than what the Moto lacks.

Samsung often struggles to compete with value-oriented brands at the lower end of the market, and that’s the case here with the Galaxy A12. It’s not a bad phone and it lasts, takes decent photos and looks great in the process. It’s also Samsung, and branding alone might make it more attractive than its strengths.
But if you’re on a tight budget, does the badge on the back of your phone really matter? If you go with one of the competitors, you can get a great overall package and possibly save quite a bit. However, if you must get a Galaxy, the A12 is a reasonable compromise. But for the money, it wouldn’t be our best choice.

It’s also quite different from many of its siblings as it’s one of the few Samsung phones with an IPS panel instead of AMOLED, making it a more expensive unit for its budget target.

The biggest improvement we can expect is in the camera department. The 13MP sensor has been replaced with a much larger 48MP imager. Those 48MP Quad-Bayer (or Tetracell, to use Samsung’s term) sensors have helped improve mid-range image quality considerably, and it’s great to see it come down to the baseline now.
The 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera and 2MP depth sensor have been carried over from the Galaxy A11, and there’s a new addition, though not the only one – a separate 2MP macro shooter.
A water notch on the front hides an 8MP f/2.2 selfie camera. Samsung’s move from a hole-punch to a notch design is somewhat surprising, but the performance is more important and we’ll explore it in detail in our review.
Another big improvement is the battery capacity. The Galaxy A12 has a 5,000mAh unit compared to the A11’s 4,000mAh, so we expect a significant increase in battery life. 15W charging doesn’t sound impressive, but it’s by no means too bad for a basic phone. And unlike the latest premium phones, this one comes with the requisite charger in the box.
