The Samsung Apps BD-C5500’s expandable platform and DLNA compatibility make it stand out from other entry-level players, although it’s one of the slowest players we’ve tested.

Whether you choose an entry-level Blu-ray player or a more expensive mid-range model, you usually only need one feature – built-in Wi-Fi. Samsung’s BD-C5500 doesn’t have built-in Wi-Fi (though it can be added with an $80 USB dongle), but it comes in about $65 cheaper than the BD-C6500 and still delivers the same great picture. quality. The BD-C5500 also includes Samsung Apps, the company’s extensible platform for streaming media and other Internet services such as Twitter. While it may not be as popular as Apple’s App Store, the platform is already packed with names like Netflix, Vudu, Pandora and YouTube. The BD-C5500 is also one of the few entry-level players that is also DLNA compatible; both the LG BD550 and the Panasonic DMP-BD65K cannot stream digital media over a network.

On the other hand, the BD-C5500 lacks many of the extra features that give the more expensive BD-C6500 an edge over the competition, such as 7.1 analog audio outputs and built-in memory. It also shares other step-by-step flaws, namely a slow operating speed and the fact that last year’s Samsung Blu-ray player seemed to have reliability issues. Overall, the BD-C5500 stands out from the entry-level bundle with Samsung apps and DLNA compatibility, but if those features aren’t a priority for you, you might be happier with a faster entry-level player .
The BD-C5500 has a glossy black finish on the front panel, enhanced by a silver strip on the top right that marks the playback controls. The look isn’t one of the company’s favourites, with the silver band reminding us more of the Vizio VBR200W than traditional Samsung style. There’s a large LCD display in the center of the unit, and below the front panel controls is a pull-out tab that reveals a USB port. The front panel controls are touch-sensitive buttons, which I found to be very responsive. The design is certainly more functional than the high-end buttons on the BD-C6900, and while we like the look of other Samsungs better, it’s still better than the boxy aesthetic of the Panasonic players.
Samsung redesigned its Blu-ray remote this year, opting for a wider, flatter clicker that doesn’t have much of the glossy finish that collected fingerprints on old remotes. The new button layout is simple, with the most important buttons like the directional pad and playback controls falling easily under your thumb. The numpad is a bit too big for our tastes (who uses a numpad often?), and the eject button could be more prominent, but these are minor gripes. The remote can also control a TV.
Samsung has completely redesigned its user interface and we love the new look. It is visually appealing with a wood grain background and large icons for different types of media (Internet @ TV, Music, Video, Photos). There are also five large icons at the top for popular streaming services (TV listings Rovi, Blockbuster, Netflix, Vudu and Pandora) so you can quickly access them without jumping into the Samsung Apps interface. is more satisfying. Unfortunately, you can’t customize the icons that appear at the top, so if you’re not a fan of, say, Rovi TV listings, you can’t replace them with Picasa. Overall, it’s an upgrade to Samsung’s previous user interface that makes it easier to access the service you want to use.

If you want to delve deeper into Samsung’s online offerings, you can go to the Samsung Apps platform (aka Internet@TV; Samsung uses the terms interchangeably). Here you can search and download new apps, which are categorized into genres such as video, games, sports and lifestyle. The apps currently available are free, but Samsung said premium apps will be available in the future. We haven’t seen any new apps appear since we’ve had the player, so it’s hard to gauge how much additional functionality the platform will offer. We’d also like to see the option to rate apps, which would make it easier to find quality apps.
The Samsung Apps platform is promising, but we haven’t seen any new apps yet, and there’s currently no way to rate them.
In addition to streaming content, the BD-C5500 can also scan digital media files from a connected USB drive. We found the navigation method for digital media files to be a little geekier than the other menus, but that’s understandable since it’s more advanced than a feature in the first place. On the other hand, the form could use work; for example, when browsing a menu, there are two columns of tracks, and it can be difficult at first to figure out which menu is first.
The BD-C5500 has a basic feature set, but that’s the norm for entry-level Blu-ray players. There’s no built-in Wi-Fi, though Samsung offers an $80 USB Wi-Fi dongle if you want to add wireless connectivity later. However, note that it only costs $65 more for the BD-C6500, which has built-in Wi-Fi; in other words, if you want Wi-Fi, you just have to get the BD-C6500, which has other additional features.

For 2010, Samsung took a different approach to streaming media services than its competitors with Samsung Apps. Modeled after the iPhone’s App Store, Samsung Apps allows developers to create programs that can be downloaded with compatible Samsung products, allowing owners to add the programs they like. To be fair, other manufacturers have added features via firmware updates, but Samsung’s platform seems to be easier to expand, meaning buyers could benefit from additional services that have been added over time.
Even though no new services are added to Samsung Apps, the initial selection of streaming media services is excellent. All the major bases are covered, including streaming subscription movies from Netflix, streaming paid movies from Vudu, and streaming music for free from Pandora. Our only minor gripe is that the BD-C5500 still uses the slightly older Netflix interface rather than the newer, more capable interface available on the LG BD550 and PS3 Slim.
The BD-C5500 is also DLNA compatible and can stream video, audio and photo files from a networked computer or view them from a USB drive. DLNA compliance is a big step up from last year’s “PC streaming” feature, which was difficult to set up, even for techies; I haven’t had any problems transferring files this year. I also had no problem playing MKV and DivX HD files from a connected USB drive; a full list of supported formats is available in the manual on page 10.
Like almost all Blu-ray players available now, the BD-C5500 offers integrated encoding for both Dolby and DTS high-resolution formats. If you want to play SACDs and DVD-Audio, you’ll have to look at Oppo’s competing players; Sony’s competing BDP-S370 also offers SACD playback.

The BD-C5500’s AV output selection is basic, but that’s to be expected for an entry-level model. There are no multi-channel analog outputs, although Samsung does offer 7.1 analog outputs on the BD-C6500. Many Blu-ray players also have optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, but it’s not a big deal if you run out of open source inputs on your AV receiver.
Like almost all other players, the BD-C5500 also includes an Ethernet port if you prefer the stability of a wired connection. We were pleased to note that the BD-C5500’s rear panel USB port – designated for the Wi-Fi adapter – can be used for a USB drive if you’re not using the Wi-Fi adapter. Interestingly, both the BD-C6500 and BD-C6900 are limited to a single USB port.

Like the BD-C6500, the BD-C5500’s Blu-ray image quality is at the top of the players we’ve reviewed this year. It passed all of our program material tests and most of the test models we threw at it, indicating that it should deliver flawless playback on almost any Blu-ray you throw at it. Only the most dedicated videographers will appreciate the subtle advantages offered by our image quality king, the Oppo BDP-83.
