Samsung A 51 T Mobile – The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a good display and good build quality, but it is severely hampered by slow performance.

This device is no longer widely available. The Samsung Galaxy A51 is no longer available for purchase at most retailers. If you’re looking for another device, check out our list of the best budget Android phones you can buy and the best Samsung phones.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 was one of Samsung’s biggest mid-range entries for 2020. It marked the first time Samsung’s A series was available in the US, making it an affordable option for people who wanted a Samsung smartphone but didn’t want one. Pay $1,000 to get one.

With so much competition in the mid-range, is it a good choice for the price? Find out at

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for six days on Google Fi. During the review period, the phone was running One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material called Samsung “Glassstick”. This gives the pure plastic phones a higher quality feel, but it certainly doesn’t feel as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic, although I don’t like the plastic as much as other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery, and very light at just 158g. For comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The edge of the device is aluminum and feels very high quality. On the right side, you’ll find the USB-C port, speakers, and the power button and volume rocker with a headphone jack below. On the left side of the phone is the dual-SIM card tray, which holds two SIMs and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double as a second slot to allow for a SIM card or a microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card tray. That’s good to see.

I love the subtle colors and design on the back of the device. It’s definitely different, and I appreciate phones with interesting colors. The model I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off an iridescent glow when it hits the light at the right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer rainbow-like shades.

The speakers on the phone were loud but lacked bass sense. I don’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the headphone jack is a big plus.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has surprisingly good performance. Most mid-range phones use LCDs instead of OLEDs, but Samsung was able to pack a moderately dense pixel count into a large OLED screen. It’s a 1080p screen. Since most high-end phones come with 1080p mode by default, this didn’t bother me. Colors were punchy and bright, which is typical for Samsung panels. This is great.

One unusual thing about this display is the punch-hole camera cutout in the middle of the phone. While I usually like punch hole cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which makes it much more noticeable than it would be without the ring. It’s not mind-blowing, but it makes you aware of it even when the display is off. I don’t know why Samsung did this.

The Galaxy A51 has an optical in-display fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It took about two seconds to register my fingerprint each time. Additionally, the accuracy rate seemed to be around 50% when I used the device, which is pretty bad. You may be better off using the PIN unlock or the 2D face unlock option for speed and accuracy.

With a mid-range Exynos chip and only 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to do well. After using the device for a while and running our benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.

I haven’t said this about phones for a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience delays in opening apps and multitasking, and swiping around the UI often stops. The phone used 1.9GB of the available 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a bad sign. In our testing, we determined that modern versions of Android need around 6GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this was confirmed by the device.

In benchmarks, we saw a similar story. The phone fell behind most devices in our tests. Since its launch, the Snapdragon 700 series phones have outperformed the Exynos Galaxy A51 processor, lagging behind the rest of the mid-range. See the results below.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a large 4,000 mAh battery. With a low-powered CPU and limited RAM, you’d expect the device to have killer battery life. And honestly, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as it should have been. The call lasted about 29 hours from 8am one day to 1pm the next. It’s definitely not as good as phones with much bigger batteries, but I’m glad it can last a full day at least. I got about four and a half hours of screen time on this device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t the fastest. Considering the 18W charging the first Google Pixel supported in 2016, it feels a little slow for 2020. Samsung Galaxy S20 flagship devices charge at 25W by default these days, and so I would like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.

For a sub-$400 phone, the Galaxy A51 has very good cameras and some of them to boot. It has a 48mp main sensor that packs 12MP images, along with wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor, and a 32MP front-facing camera.

Dynamic range looked good on this camera set, although it felt like the photos were a little underexposed – perhaps to the point where you don’t get the best shots. That being said, some camera systems can make shadows too strong due to dynamic range, producing a strange gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones have traditionally done this, so I was surprised not to see the A51 arrive.

Colors were generally good, but the A51 tended to overdo certain colors like blues and greens. It has the ability to make the sky and plants pop, but it made some of the images look a bit bland. Samsung has always done this with its camera systems, though, so I’m not surprised.

The depth sensor seemed to help a bit, and I’m glad it only works on people and animals. Although the bokeh could look a little more natural, object detection and clipping was very accurate. I was pleasantly surprised. Hair detection is still not clear, but this is common with artificial bokeh. This method makes the skin softer than I would like.

The selfie camera was also very good with good dynamic range and color. Sharpness was very good, although it was still too saturated colors like green and blues.

The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99, and it can be had for much less. If you shop around you can easily find a phone for under $300. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering with the phone.

With the A51, you’re getting a great screen, good build quality, some great cameras, and even a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that support up to at least Android 12. However, while the build quality and screen are excellent, the phone’s sub-par performance is the his Achilles heel. And for a retail price of $349, the competition is very, very high.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and good build quality for the same price, while the Google Pixel 4a has a great Android experience and an amazing camera for $350. And if you’re willing to spend more than $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full Galaxy S20 for $699 before trade-in. If you’re looking for something similar with a bit more power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is out now, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an upgraded version of the A51 with a faster chipset and a bigger battery.

If you want Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. Upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC keeps solid build quality and ample battery life. You’ll pay a bit more at $499, but the improvements are worth the bump. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak edge cameras, but the move to 25W charging solves our biggest Galaxy A51 gripes.
