Roku’s new Streaming Stick 4K is a modest improvement over the previous model, but it’s still one of the best media players you can buy.

Roku 4k Streaming Stick $25!

Roku’s latest media device, the Streaming Stick 4K, is a compact streaming player designed to plug directly into your TV’s HDMI port. Once connected, the stick gives you access to a wide range of streaming apps and playback resolution up to 4K.

The new model will look familiar to anyone who used the Streaming Stick+ before Roku, as it’s basically the same device with some notable improvements inside. With that in mind, we tested the Roku Streaming Stick 4K to see how these new features work.

Like the Streaming Stick+, the new Roku Streaming Stick 4K takes the form of a compact media stick that plugs directly into your TV’s HDMI port.

This means that it does not take up space on your TV stand, but it hangs out from your screen. Sticks like this are typically easy to install, but can be a bit tricky to place depending on the design of your TV port.

Amazon includes an HDMI extender with its Fire TV sticks to make sure you don’t have any issues, but Roku doesn’t. However, Roku will send you an extender for free if you end up needing one.

Roku Streaming 4K and Roku Streaming Stick+ are largely identical when it comes to external design, except for a small cosmetic difference. The Streaming Stick 4K now features the Roku logo in glossy black against a matte finish. The Streaming Stick+ had the opposite look, with a matte logo and glossy background.

One of the new features of the Streaming Stick 4K is its updated long-range Wi-Fi receiver, which Roku says can be up to 2x faster than the old model.

Best Streaming Devices In 2023

In my testing, this claim was spot on. With the Streaming Stick 4K and Streaming Stick + both connected to my Wi-Fi, the Streaming Stick + can get a connection of 53.61 Mbps, while the Streaming Stick 4K can get a faster connection of 99.82 Mbps.

I didn’t notice any immediate benefit from the faster connection, but this could be useful for people with slower internet plans who need to take advantage of any boost they can get.

Although Amazon and Google have opted for content-focused interfaces, Roku still uses an application-focused approach. Instead of bombarding you with movie and show recommendations off the bat, the Roku home screen presents you with a simple grid of services. I prefer this design, but some may find it a bit dated.

General navigation is smooth, but the device can lag here and there. Roku says this new model can boot up to 30% faster than the previous version. When you restart both devices, this claim proves to be true as the Streaming Stick 4K takes 26 seconds to fully restart and the Streaming Stick + takes 36 seconds.

I also noticed a slight increase in overall responsiveness during navigation. The time it takes to open individual apps is the same on both models, but the new version cuts about half a second to a second when loading services like Netflix, YouTube and Disney Plus.

Overall though, I wouldn’t say the processor upgrade is much of a selling point. The Streaming Stick 4K is fast enough to meet most streaming needs, but it’s not worth upgrading from the older model just for this upgrade alone.

“Black Widow” is one of the many titles on Disney Plus that you can stream in Dolby Vision. Steven Cohen/Disney Plus/Insider

Until now, the only Roku device with Dolby Vision support was its flagship Roku Ultra set-top box ($100). The Streaming Stick 4K finally brings this feature to one of the company’s most affordable offerings.

Roku Unveils Streaming Stick 4k And 4k+ To Rival Amazon’s Fire Stick 4k Max

Dolby Vision is an advanced HDR (high dynamic range) format that can provide improved color and contrast on TVs with compatible Dolby Vision applications. Disney Plus, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max and Apple TV Plus all offer some titles in Dolby Vision.

If you have a compatible TV, Dolby Vision playback can provide a more accurate picture than the standard HDR format, known as HDR10. But in most cases the actual differences are subtle. As I own a Dolby Vision TV and am a big video buff, this is a feature I always look for in a streaming player, but don’t expect a huge jump in video quality.

The Streaming Stick 4K comes with a standard Roku Voice Remote that requires a button to initiate voice control. But buyers who want a hands-free experience can opt for the Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ package ($70). The stick itself is exactly the same, but you get the upgraded Voice Remote Pro Roku instead of the regular remote.

Voice Remote Pro adds two shortcut buttons, a headphone jack for private listening, a built-in rechargeable battery (via USB), and best of all, hands-free voice control. You can just say “Hey Roku” to wake up the remote and then start searching and controlling without lifting a finger.

The hands-free function works excellently. I’ve never had a problem with the remote hearing me or understanding my commands and searches. While holding down a button on the standard remote isn’t a big deal, the Voice Remote Pro is more convenient, especially when searching for videos on YouTube.

A microphone switch is also integrated so you can easily disable the hands-free function if you prefer to use the button. Voice Remote Pro costs $30 on its own, so the bundle saves $10 off the regular combined price of both items.

The Roku Streaming Stick 4K is a reliable media player through and through. It has all the great features I look for in a streaming device at this price point and it works well.

That said, it doesn’t offer a huge improvement over the older Streaming Stick+. It starts up a little faster, has better Wi-Fi reception and supports Dolby Vision, but buyers who are already happy with the previous model don’t need to upgrade. However, buyers who don’t already have a streaming stick should go with this newer version because it’s more future-proof.

When it comes to competing streaming devices, the new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max is also worth considering. Its full retail price is $5 more than the Roku, but it charges many times faster. However, I prefer Roku’s interface, and Roku has an advantage with its platform-agnostic support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit devices. It also supports AirPlay, while the Fire TV Stick does not.

If fast browsing is your main concern, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is a better buy. But the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is by no means slow, and it’s better suited for those not tied to the Alexa ecosystem.
