Samsung managed to pull off one of the best smartphone designs in years with the S21. I received a “Phantom Pink” unit from the company for review and the color is stunning. I really like how the metal trim around the edge of the phone makes everything pop. Thanks to the flat display, the metal edge stands out, which contrasts with the screen. There’s a slight hint of curvature where the glass meets the metal, which makes the whole thing feel smooth and unified.
As for the camera bump, the controversial design feels personal. Unlike previous Galaxy S devices and other flagships, the bump is more natural as it is part of the metal band around the phone. The bump is also unique – I hope Samsung sticks with the design for at least a few years because it’s unlike other options on the market.
And for those worried about the plastic back, that’s fine. It doesn’t feel pliable or plasticky – the matte finish makes it feel really premium and even helps with fingerprints, although I can’t hold the phone completely smudge-free. And the best part? A less fragile part of the phone that can break if dropped.
My only real complaint with the design is the power button. Most phones I’ve used that put the power and volume buttons on the same side of the device have the volume rocker under the power button. The S21 reverses this pattern and places the volume button above the power button. My thumb naturally landed on the volume rocker and I found myself repeatedly pressing the volume up instead of the power button.

In about a week and a half that I’ve had the S21, I haven’t encountered any major issues like crashes or app freezes. The high-refresh-rate display helps things run smoothly, but there’s also something to be said for the prowess of the Snapdragon 888.

This could be partly due to the extra RAM or maybe some optimization or tweaking on Samsung’s end. Regardless, the performance difference between the S21 and S21 Ultra probably won’t make a significant difference and shouldn’t push anyone to opt for a more expensive device for improved performance.
In terms of real-world performance, most of my usage involves social media apps like Twitter and Instagram, browsing Reddit, checking Slack, browsing the web, and playing a few games. In my testing, the S21 handled all of these things perfectly well with fast performance. From a Pixel 4a, I can say that the S21 is faster, but the few seconds you can save opening an app won’t really make a big difference in daily use.
Players tend to be more appreciative of the extra performance. I tried a few different titles, and apart from one game that seemed to be locked at 30 frames per second, the performance was very smooth. Levels loaded quickly, animations were smooth, and even after 30 minutes of gameplay, the S21 never warmed up.
Battery life on the Galaxy S21 is decent, but nothing to get excited about. Like last year’s S20, the S21 can easily get through the day with some juice left in the tank, but usually not enough to get you through the second day.
