The body of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is similar to the design of the Galaxy A50s. We have a polycarbonate body, weighing up to 172g, very thin, only 7.9mm thick. The glossy body tends to pick up fingerprints, but they weren’t too visible on our Prism Crush black unit. The back end is also a bit slippery, but thankfully Samsung has included a case for this box.

The biggest change is the Infinity-O display, which we’re seeing for the first time on the Galaxy A series. It’s basically a hole in the top center of the display, similar to what we saw on the Galaxy Note 10+ ( preview ). Samsung might not have changed the body design too much, but having a punch-hole display gives this phone a premium look that we really appreciate. The Galaxy A51 features a Super AMOLED panel with full HD+ resolution, producing rich colors and sharpness. It looks stunning from the front because of the elaborate decorations around it.
The button placement is ergonomic, and on the right side we have two Nano-SIM cards and a micro SD card. The bottom has the usual headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker jack. The Galaxy A51 sports the familiar rear camera, but now has a fourth camera. It doesn’t stretch too much, which is good.
The Galaxy A51 is packed with the usual accessories, including a 15W fast charger, Type-C cable, earphones, SIM eject tool and a case.
Samsung’s Exynos 9611 processor is closely related to the 2020 Galaxy A50s, which feels a bit underpowered at this price point. The Galaxy A51 comes with either 6GB or 8GB of storage, with both variants offering 128GB of storage. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio. There are the usual sensors and the phone is also Widevine L1 certified. The Galaxy A51 supports Samsung Pay, so you can use it for contactless payments.

The software running on the phone is Samsung’s One UI 2.0, which is based on Android 10. The new version looks and feels like the previous version of One UI that we used before, but Samsung tweaked some things. Improve user experience. Changing the wallpaper is now easier as there is a dedicated menu instead of going to the theme app.
Other minor changes include the placement of app license notifications, which are now displayed at the bottom of the screen instead of at the bottom. The Device Maintenance sub-menu also has a new look. Battery usage can be monitored for the last seven days, not only when the phone is fully charged, but you can now change the lock screen app icon, change the default menu for DnD or flashlight, or change the camera shortcut.
There is some pre-installed software, including third-party apps and some Samsung apps like the Samsung Store, but most can be removed. Samsung has also added some India-specific features to the Galaxy A51 such as visual cards that identify the most relevant part of the screen and use it for one-click, multi-language predictions and organize your text messages into a smart crop. We’ve found that Smart Crop works best if there’s an image on the screen.
When it comes to everyday use, the Galaxy A51 is very similar to the Galaxy A50. We really liked the thin and light form factor. Viewing the interface is quite fast, but not too fluid. There were some cases where I noticed a slight lag in system animations. Management was decent. What will the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or 665 SoC get? At the price Samsung is asking for this phone, that’s a bit surprising.

We scored 1,86220 on AnTuTu and managed 42fps on GFXbench’s T-Rex test. The back of the phone gets a little warm when playing games and running stressful apps, but never uncomfortable. Fortunately, the Exynos 9611 SoC is quite capable in terms of graphics. PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends both have good performance and good framerate.
Biometric authentication works well, but is a bit slow. The in-display fingerprint sensor takes a while to authenticate you and unlock the phone, and it’s the same story with facial recognition.
The Galaxy A51 supports Dolby Atmos, but only when headphones are connected. Sound quality with headphones connected is average, but the phone sounds better with the latter. The bottom speaker isn’t very loud, but it’s good enough for private listening. The display is one of the best aspects of this phone. The brightness is excellent and the colors are vibrant, making any content a joy to watch.
Samsung used a 4,000mAh battery for the Galaxy A51, which clocked 14 hours and 55 minutes in our HD video loop test. We easily got through a full day of regular use and still had enough power left to get through another half day. Fast charging is available, and we were able to charge the battery to 67% in an hour. It took two hours to fully charge. It’s quite fast, but not as fast as the Redmi K20 Pro in this segment, charging 80% in an hour.

Samsung has added a new 5-megapixel macro camera to its triple-camera setup on the Galaxy A50s. These include a 48-megapixel primary sensor. 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and 5-megapixel depth sensor.
In One UI 2.0, the camera app has been tweaked a bit and now has a different looking icon. Most shooting modes are now integrated into more menus, but you can add them to the main WinFinder interface when needed.
The main camera remains a quiet 12-megapixel camera, but you can shoot at a full 48-megapixel resolution when needed. This option is hidden in the Aspect Ratio menu. In good light, the Galaxy A51 was able to capture detailed photos of objects in the center of the frame. However, objects facing the edges generally looked a bit blurry and relatively soft.

In low light, the primary camera captured excellent color and detail. There’s a special night mode, but compared to photos taken in standard portrait mode, we didn’t notice much of a difference, as the Scene Optimiser automatically adjusts settings when it detects low light.

A wide-angle camera captures more of any scene in the frame, but it introduces some nasty barrel distortion. Even after enabling the “Ultra Wide Lens Correction” option, some shots looked unnatural. Photos taken in low light with this camera appear darker and have poorer detail. Night mode doesn’t help here either.
Live Focus mode blurs the background for a more dramatic look. Image quality is good, and the depth camera helps the Galaxy A51 do a good job of detecting edges. You can adjust the resolution here, but this mode also has additional effects, such as the color tones you see on other Galaxy phones.
The engagements turned out great too. The focus speed is good enough under good lighting and we were able to capture great photos. When you use a macro camera, you can get closer to your subject. Colors aren’t bad, and the sensor picks up decent detail.
The Galaxy A51 can shoot 4K video, but without any stabilization. Video quality isn’t bad when shooting under good lighting, but clips in low light are grainy and lacks detail. You get 1080p stabilization, but the result is also a noticeable flickering effect when moving around. Continuous autopilot is also a bit lazy.
