Redmi Note 9 Review: A Basic Note That Could Do With A Little Love Tech News , Firstpost

The Max model differs from the standard Redmi Note 9 Pro model as it offers faster charging, a higher resolution main camera and more RAM. That makes it the range-topping variant. You can read more about the phone in the original article below.

Original Article March 12, 2020 (3:50 a.m. ET): The Redmi Note series has long been the king of the budget phone category, striking a good balance between price, performance, and features. Now, after weeks of teasing, Redmi has officially unveiled the Redmi Note 9 Pro (see above) and the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.

Starting with the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, it delivers some good basic specs for a budget phone. In the box, you get a Snapdragon 720G processor, 6GB to 8GB of RAM, 64GB to 128GB of expandable storage (UFS 2.1), and a 5020mAh battery with a 33V charger. Redmi says the battery can reach 50% capacity in less than 30 minutes.

Sub-brand Xiaomi is also riding the punch hole bandwagon, delivering a 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD display with a 32MP shooter in the center notch. However, don’t expect a faster refresh rate here.

True to the leak, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max also offers a 64MP quad rear camera setup. That means a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera (119-degree field of view), a 5MP macro shooter (2cm focus) and a 2MP depth sensor. Redmi has also confirmed that the phone supports night mode as well as RAW photography for more advanced, non-destructive editing.

In a rather interesting tidbit, the Xiaomi sub-brand says it uses multi-frame noise reduction with the 64MP camera, combining eight 64MP shots for a better-quality full-resolution shot. However, it notes that this feature requires 6GB of RAM, so 6GB is the minimum amount of RAM on the Pro Max.

Looking for something cheaper? Then comes the standard Redmi Note 9 Pro, which offers a largely similar experience to the Max model. That means a Snapdragon 720G chipset, expandable storage from 64GB to 128GB, a 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD display with a punch-hole notch in the middle, and a 5,020mAh battery.

However, we see some compromises compared to the Max model, such as 4GB of RAM in the base model (with an option for 6GB of RAM) and 18V charging instead of 33V.

Moving on to the camera experience, the standard model also has a quad camera setup. But you get a 48MP primary camera (GM2) instead of the Max’s 64MP sensor. Otherwise, you still get an 8MP ultra-wide camera (119-degree field of view), a 5MP macro shooter, and a 2MP depth sensor. Selfies are handled by a 16 MP sensor.

Redmi is also taking a page out of LG’s playbook by offering a professional video mode with histogram, peak focus and manual controls on the Note 9 Pro. It’s not clear if this feature is available on the Mac version, but you’d assume it is given the higher price.

Both devices have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, IR blaster, 3.5mm port, USB-C, NavIC support, P2I coating and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back.

Redmi also focuses on haptic feedback from both devices, using a “z-motor” for better haptic feedback. In fact, the company says it supports more than 150 actions, including swiping, texting, typing, email, and more.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: Great Value For Money

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max will retail for Rs 16,499 (~$218) for the 6GB/64GB model, Rs 17,999 (~$237) for the 6GB/128GB option and Rs 19,999 (~$264) for the of 8 GB/128 GB.

Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is priced at Rs 13,999 (~$185) for the 4GB/64GB variant and Rs 16,999 (~$224) for the 6GB/128GB option.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro has already been launched via Amazon India and Mi.com. The Note 9 Pro Max should go on sale from March 25. The thing about Xiaomi phones, especially the Redmi Note series, is that I can blindly recommend them. I never had to think about specs, features and most importantly: value for money. Phones were always good, always would be, but not anymore.

Let’s face it, these phones are basically identical. They differ only in the camera part and the supplied accessory (charger). Side by side, face up or face down, you won’t be able to tell them apart. But it’s not just looks. specifications and performance extension are identical. They’re also great phones, and if I didn’t know better, I’d estimate their prices at around 30k, maybe more.

Both phones feature 6.67-inch FHD+ 60Hz LCD displays paired with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC, 4/6/8GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, a 5,020mAh battery, and quad cameras on the back — sharing an ultra – 8 MP wide camera, 5 MP macro camera and 2 MP depth sensor.

Now for the differences: The Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with a 48MP primary rear camera (12MP built-in) versus the 64MP unit (16MP built-in) on the Pro Max. You have options of 4/6 GB of RAM on the Pro and 6/8 GB on the Pro Max. Finally, the Pro gets a pretty decent 18V charger and the Max gets a more powerful 33V charger. Pricing for the Pro starts at Rs 13,999 (4/64) and for the Max at Rs 16,499 (6/64).

How many megapixels here or there? And you don’t really need a pesky 33V charger for long-term use, do you?

Performance is a sore point on both phones. Now, Xiaomi told me it chose the 60Hz screen and more efficient SD720G chipset (over the 90Hz screen and MediaTek G90T SoC in the competing Realme 6) because:

Both are good arguments and Xiaomi is not wrong. However, once you use the Realme 6 (review) and especially play games on it — more difficult games like

Redmi Note 12 Series With Up To 120w Fast Charging And 200mp Main Camera Launched

, etc. — you can really feel the difference. Even in general use, the Pro and Pro Max tend to stutter noticeably, especially when browsing and using picture-in-picture features.

And the Realme 6, even though it has a smaller battery (4,300 mAh), a faster screen and a more demanding SoC, lasts almost all day (7-8 hours on screen vs. the Pro Max’s 8-10), so the battery life increase isn’t that important in actual use.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro’s camera setup was disappointing. The main camera is good in good light, really good. However, let the light drop a bit or try to shoot indoors and you’ll be left with – more often than not – blurry, out-of-focus shots that may also be underexposed. I suspect this has more to do with the slow shutter speed and ISO sensitivity, but either way, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max’s cameras are simply better.

The quad camera setup on the back of the phone is good, but the Max’s 64MP primary camera is way ahead of the Pro’s 48MP unit. Image: Anirudh Regidi

Redmi Note 10 Pro Max Unboxing And First Impressions

Pro Max, on the other hand, was fantastic. Images are crisp and clear, and there’s more than enough detail for those looking to do some cropping. Shutter speeds also seem faster and there’s less ghosting when you’re trying to capture fast-moving subjects.

In night mode, the difference between the two phones is night and day. Literally. The Note 9 Pro’s night mode offers slightly more detail than normal mode, while the Note 9 Pro Max’s night mode is almost comparable to the iPhone 11’s night mode, at least in terms of color and exposure.

And in the video, the Note 9 Pro Max is way ahead. Both cameras struggle a bit with focus, but the Note 9 Pro couldn’t properly expose the scene to save its life. In the bird feeding video you see here, the Note 9 Pro just can’t maintain the exposure while the Note 9 Pro Max does it easily.

When it comes to selfies, both cameras are pretty good. The Pro Max’s 32MP selfies are slightly sharper, but image quality is largely comparable.
