“What do you say? They were still making billions and billions of dollars,” said Bish of Westampton, New Jersey. “If there are no prisons, where is the barrier? We’ve lost two generations to greed.”
Individual victims and survivors share in the $750 million fund, which is not available in other opioid settlements. About 149,000 people applied early and were entitled to shares in the fund.
That amount remains unchanged in the new plan, but states can create additional funds to compensate victims if they choose.

Other new rules include an agreement that Sackler family members will not fight if agencies remove their names from family-funded buildings. Additional company documents must be made public.
Most of the money goes to state and local governments, Native American tribes and some hospitals to fight the opioid crisis, which has been linked to more than 500,000 deaths in the United States over the past two decades. .

There are two key differences between the latest Purdue settlement and the previous settlement obtained last year. The Sacklers’ cash settlement has increased by at least $1.2 billion, and state attorneys general and the District of Columbia have settled.
The money will flow after Purdue, renamed Knoa Pharma, emerges from bankruptcy. It is not yet clear when that will happen. The final settlement payment is not due until 2039, according to plans.
Last year, eight states and D.C. refused to join, and then filed a maximum appeal after a bankruptcy judge approved the deal.
Purdue Pharma, U.s. States Agree To New Opioid Settlement
In December, a U.S. district judge upheld the nine rulings. Judge Colleen McMahon overturned the decision, finding that she had no right to grant bankruptcy protection to non-bankruptcy filters unless certain parties disagreed.
Purdue argued that if overturned, it could kill the settlement rule that prevails in complex litigation.
The attorneys general who signed on will give up the main legal battle, but could write briefs to instruct courts not to grant protections to those who don’t file for bankruptcy.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said he felt a special obligation to be “aggressive” in the case because he was based at Purdue. On Thursday, he expressed his displeasure with the township, which he said was 40% more than before.
Oregon, Washington To Get Millions Of Dollars From Purdue Pharma Settlement
“I wanted a lot. I still want a lot. But I got as much as I could,” he said at a press conference. “If we continued, we would be doing it alone, and that’s unsustainable.”
The new settlement is subject to approval by US Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain. Appeals against previous versions of the plan can continue through the court system.
