According to a press release shared by Samsung Netherlands, the Galaxy A50 will reportedly have a starting price of EUR 349, which is roughly Rs. 28,000. Also in separate news, Samsung North Korea has learned that the global rollout of the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 will begin from the middle of next month. Samsung Netherlands has also confirmed the availability of the Galaxy A50 by mid-March, but the price for the Galaxy A30 is still unknown.

Samsung is on a roll these days – apart from their flagship S10 series, they’ve introduced a series of mid-range A phones. Thanks to increased competition, Samsung is getting very aggressive when it comes to pricing, which is why the A50 starts at Rs 19,999.
This is the company’s first mid-range offering with an in-display fingerprint scanner. But wait for your excitement – it doesn’t use the S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, but a conventional optical scanner ore advocated by other brands (like the one used by OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo). While the competition uses fourth-generation in-display sensors, the A50’s fingerprint sensor feels like first-generation technology. Fingerprint recognition is slow and doesn’t work about 50% of the time. Samsung has pushed out a software update to improve speed/accuracy, but we’ve only seen the original iVerify. In comparison, Face Unlock works calmly – much better than what we’ve seen on flagship phones.
The A50 features a stunning 6.4-inch Full HD, super-aluminum display with Infinity U-style mesh. The screen is a joy to display content on and impresses with thin bezels, high brightness and deep blacks. However, it uses an older Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the screen, which is a cheat. We really liked the solid build quality of the device despite the polycarbonate back panel. The back panel is highly polished and reflects light in all the colors of the rainbow. As usual, the glossy finish is susceptible to smudges and fingerprints.
Performance is where the phone fails us. It has a Samsung Exynos 9610 octa-core processor along with 4/6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Our review was the 4GB version in the UK and it was able to play games like PUBG and Asphalt smoothly. However, when the performance ended, we were surprised to see random delays and hesitations. This was true for basic tasks like swiping left on the Bixby screen, switching between active apps, editing photos, and even closing an app to return to the Hoes screen. This becomes apparent if there are more than 10 apps running in the background – our theory is that there is no choice between the new Exynos chip and the operating system. Battery life is a strong point of the phone – we were able to regularly do a day and a half backup. Additionally, there is support for fast charging, and a fast charger is provided in the box.

The Galaxy A50 has a triple camera setup on the back that delivers excellent results in daylight. Photos have a good amount of detail and the camera interface is snappy. It has a wide-angle lens that is great for shooting landscapes and architecture. The third lens is a depth sensor that helps with live focus and offers good edge detection. Portrait photos were excellent with a good amount of bokeh, but there are better camera phones available in this price segment, such as the Poco F1. The problem is that photos suffer from soft details in low light and we often ended up with blurry photos. We also didn’t like that video recording is limited to full HD resolution in the default camera app, and that you can’t switch between the standard and wide-angle lenses while shooting. The 25P front camera acts like a rear camera – great photos in daylight but lacks detail when used in low light.
Other features we liked on the phone include a dedicated icroSD slot for storage expansion, high output from the external speaker, and Dolby Atos for audio. However, at 20 thousand rubles, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is a hard sell. The Poco F1 offers better performance with its Snapdragon 845 processor at a reasonable price, and even scores high on camera and battery performance. The Redi Note 7 Pro delivers a better processor, premium glass design, excellent 48P dual rear camera and battery life at just Rs 13,999. If you’re stuck on the Sasung brand, you can get the Galaxy 30 for Rs 14,999 with a super-aoled-like display, triple camera setup and a large 5,000 Ah battery.
