And I couldn’t talk any longer about what was probably my most anticipated release of 2020: NECA’s Tokka and Rahzar based on their looks.
One of the next big events of 2020 was the New York Toy Fair. The fair, which takes place every year in February, is primarily a trade fair, but over the years it has become much more. As E3, the coverage of the event, essentially turns it into a full-on consumer sit-down, only the general public has largely still kept the Toy Fair scene. The event was the first time for manufacturers to display their wares and solicit orders from partner retailers and other vendors. Now most of these are handled throughout the year so communication is much easier these days than 30 years ago and because of the big game producers the event is almost more like an opportunity to show off and the audience is excited about what they have to do. . I came later in the year.

For last year’s event, I was excited to see what NECA was cooking up when it came to their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license. I’m sure there’s more interest in the cartoon line, and I’m sure I’ll be heading to Toy Fair 2020, but what ended up sneaking up on me was a couple of movie clips that I don’t even care about. Tokka and Rahzar are new mutants introduced in the sequel film.
In 1991. The movie is pretty funny and a little cheesy, but the creature designs of Tokka and Rahzar (handled by the talented people at Jim Henson’s creature shop) were off the charts. They are very high, and when NECA originally said that they were not all interested in producing toys from the sequel, they basically had to give in to the demands of these guys.
This year, NECA began distributing all movie-related merchandise for TMNT at Walmart. Not well. NECA had to endure a lot of fan backlash, some justified, some not, over the summer the product was in short supply. For my fault, the company decided to do something different with the two deals they planned for Tokka and Rahzar. Instead of sending it to Walmart, like with other figures, the company decided to do it through its website to order the device. One week in July, anyone who could place an order (or multiples) on the NECA website and wait for a year after delivery. The only problem was that it had to be paid upfront, but you are guaranteed a certain figure in the event. I don’t know if Walmart had little interest in the set (it was more expensive than the standard two-pack, which retails for about $70) or if NECA had never offered it to a retailer, but either way, this delivery method was great. God sends Granted, the wait was long considering the amount of trouble I personally put into the set, but all in all, from the order window, it was short-lived in less than 4 months and the company seemed to have removed it.
My departure comes in mid-December, so I had time to enjoy these “babies” before making this post. First of all, the box guys is huge! It used to be a standard window, it just had to be enlarged to accommodate these guys. This goblet is 5 1/2″ high, 9 3/4″ long and about 14 1/4″ long. The box is decorated with many elaborate photographs and an image of turtles clustered on a tray of broken theater posters. If you are a coin collector, you will need that you have to clear some space to display this thing, because NECA could have peeked in the presentation considering that this will not appear on the shelves, but again like this. The distribution is quite common these days and NECA knows that many collectors buy two sets: one to open and one to keep.

Jason Frailey handled the sculpting of these figures, and to put it simply, my reaction would be: Holy shit!
The figures themselves are a sight to behold. They are depicted later in the movie when the turtles fight in a junkyard. Tokka has less of his body except for elbow and knee pads, while Rahzar is decked out in everything. As in the movie, Tokka is the smaller of the two, standing about 7 inches tall at the top of the head, with the skull protruding a little higher. Rahzar is under 8 inches tall and both figures have a terrific view of the shelf. They are very close to each other, although it can be a little misleading because the scale is not perfect when it comes to turtles. They are shorter, as you can see in the pictures, but it is not as intense as it looked in the movie. Of course, the movie usually uses a low angle when filming the two at the same time. I think it’s pretty good, but considering the scale of Super Shredder was basically perfect, people might be a little surprised that these two aren’t bigger.
The last scale of criticism from these two. We certainly wouldn’t add a few when it comes to the sculpting and overall look of these guys. Tokka is made with a slightly more olive skin tone compared to turtles and looks great. It’s got a dirty look, and the wrist wash tape is better done because it looks pretty dirty. His eyes are so expressive and he’s just waiting for me to say I want a donut. However, various keys were printed on the shell. They have a springy quality to them, but they don’t give the impression of being sharp. You know when you catch this person. Rahzar looks just as good as his box-mate. Well, I’d say it doesn’t look as perfect as Tokka, but that’s only because he had a skin in the movie, but here he has sculpted plastic. That said, it looks really good and I wouldn’t suggest that NECA go with the faux fur as it might not be successful. His eyes are also super expressive and his mouth has the permanent smile he had in the movie. The nails on the hands and feet look amazing when they wash just the right amount of yellow and brown to really bring them up. The texture of the black, rubber and parts of the armor is also spot on and it’s so great that it’s hard to see every single detail in the film itself. I didn’t even notice before that he was sticking out pieces of his thigh like torn rubber bands with his claws. Eget’s abdomen is secured with genuine bands and moves freely without distraction. There is a lot of soft plastic for things like the waist or the shoulder pads and knee pads, which not only look great, but seem quite durable. It is difficult
