Mac Jones – The three-and-out has been a familiar sight for the Patriots this preseason. I was thinking of taking a page from their trust of current work/player progress. Here are three thoughts on the Patriots in the precipice of the regular season, starting with McJones’ state of mind.

No matter how quickly the monotone Mac lets out a voice of confidence, his body language gives it away, showing that he’s upset about the repeated offense. He’s giving up plays in practice, getting out of the pocket prematurely in preseason games and rolling wrists on the sidelines.

All of this points to a quarterback facing a crisis of confidence in an offense with a new vocabulary, new communication and an emphasis on different elements. That’s shocking considering much of the Patriots’ ability to close the gap with the Buffalo Bills has been at Jones’ level this season. The redesign was meant to elevate Mack and bring him closer to what he played for at Alabama. Still no dice and no joy for Mac.

In seven preseason drives led by Mack, the offense fumbled three times and was held another time. The passing offense seems skilled only in the gun; Jones recorded 11 of 13 completions.

Belichick spent the entire season game planning for the Dolphins. Miami’s defensive coordinator is former Patriots defensive assistant Josh Boyer, so the principles of Miami’s scheme are familiar. Plus, there’s still enough institutional knowledge of a traditional veteran offense to unleash those plays. The Patriots are still a game plan driven team.

It might be reminiscent of when the Patriots started Cam Newton at Gillette Stadium two years ago against the Dolphins. Everyone expected a Patriots offense in Brady’s version. Instead, Belichick made noise at quarterback.

The true test of this retooled offense won’t come in Week 1. It comes when they have just one week to blow out opponents like Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Green Bay. Then we’ll see what the improved offense may or may not be.

The Patriots thrived on unproven free agent alchemy, sure, but if they were doing something really special, they’d be bringing in some of those players instead of some dudes in the draft. Part of the reason these players make the team is the Patriots’ shaky draft record from 2016-19 and an over-reliance on aging veterans like Dontae Hightower and Kyle Van Noy.
