Warner Bros. Home Entertainment just gave us official confirmation that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy are officially coming to 4K Ultra HD on 12/12.

The Hobbit trilogy includes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, both theatrical and extended versions.

All six films have been fully remastered by New Zealand’s Weta Digital in a process overseen by director Peter Jackson. For The Lord of the Rings, this includes a new 4K scan of the original camera skin and a new 4K scan of the original VFX footage. The Hobbit films were shot digitally in 5K.
All six movies include Dolby Vision and HDR10 High Dynamic Range. Each of them will have Dolby Atmos sound. (Note that The Hobbit movies do NOT have high frame rate HFR – they shoot at 48fps, but 4K UHD supports 60fps.)
“In addition, it was announced that the 4K UHD Middle-earth Ultimate Collectors Edition will contain the theatrical and extended versions of all six films, as well as new bonus content, previously released Blu-ray discs of The Hobbit trilogy and remastered films. Here’s the great news: the SRP for each trilogy is just $89.99, which means the sale price makes them even lower.
Audio options on 4K discs include English (Dolby Atmos), Latin Spanish, Canadian French, and Brazilian Portuguese. Translations for the US release include English SDH, Latin Spanish, Canadian French, and Brazilian Portuguese. Both trilogies have no extras (ie no audio commentary included). Enhanced editions are split across two 4K discs to allow for maximum video data rates.

As a reminder, the set contains theatrical and extended cuts of all three films (extended cuts on 2 discs each), but these will only be 4K releases (Blu-rays not included). All three films have been newly remastered in 4K with stunning Dolby Atmos sound.
