The 4K LG OLED 55CX9LA TV shines in the test with its first-class picture quality. The Ultra HD display is almost perfect and has been slightly improved over the already powerful predecessor. In addition, the equipment is technically modern: HDMI 2.1 is supported and OLED offers gamers a very low latency. The 55-inch TV is also reasonably priced given its specifications. With its 2020 OLED TVs, LG defends its top position. We tested the premium model LG OLED 55CX9LA. In 2020, CX stands for large-format OLED displays. There are also wall-mounted TVs or models with a connected soundbar in the LG range, but these are more expensive with comparable picture quality. The suffix 9LA identifies the German country code and equipment. The 55-inch model from our test is also available in 48-inch (compare prices), 65-inch (compare prices) or 77-inch (compare prices) sizes.

The predecessor LG OLED 55C97LA (to test) from 2019 was a first-class OLED TV. The picture in the CX is just as great, some dark scenes in the test even seemed a bit more detailed to us, i.e. a bit clearer. We evaluated the image in the so-called “Cinemaker” mode. The 4K Blu-ray display (3840×2160 pixels) is at the highest level and the trained eye shouldn’t notice any flaws even in the colour-intensive HDR mode. Full HD Blu-rays also look great – the CX also copes very well with the so-called interlaced material in the interlacing process, which some TV stations broadcast, but falls a little behind the top models from Samsung and Sony.
The maximum brightness of the display is 726 cd/m², which is a good value for an OLED TV. The maximum brightness of our LG CX test device is almost at the level of the tested LG C9 – however, these values can vary slightly depending on the individual model. The contrast values are also almost identical, with the CX achieving a very good 241:1 in our large-area checkerboard contrast measurement (the C9 achieved 242:1) and a very small area in the middle in our micro-contrast measurement. Both devices have the same aspect ratio of 233:1 – an excellent value that no other LCD television can match. The coverage of the DCI-P3 color space relevant for HDR films is 98 percent. In short, the image quality is fantastic.
Especially in dark rooms, OLED TVs like the LG CX cut a fine figure, while ultra-bright premium LCD TVs from Samsung and Sony can play to their advantage in light-flooded living rooms.

The sound of the LG OLED 55CX9LA is decent, but not outstanding. There’s no integrated soundbar and no additional audio enhancements like upward-firing speakers. With the 55CX9LA, LG is also clearly targeting gamers – and not just console enthusiasts, but also PC users. The OLED TV has a very low latency of 13 milliseconds in game mode, so the image is transmitted without any noticeable delay. At the same time, the TV supports Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, which synchronize the display’s refresh rate with the image sequence output by the PC graphics card. Full support of the HDMI 2.1 standard offers an optional automatic mode for low latency. The TV offers 4K HDR video at 120 frames per second, eARC audio and variable refresh rate. Much remains to be seen, but the LG TV is ready for it.
In addition to four HDMI interfaces (with HDMI 2.1 and HDCP 2.3), the usual TV tuners for satellite, cable and antenna television are available in duplicate, as well as three USB 2.0 ports with USB recording functionality. You can get a network connection via LAN or WLAN-ac. You can connect headphones via cable or Bluetooth 5.0, external speakers via digital audio output. The only thing that has to be left out is a component input for connecting older DVD players. The remote control is of good quality, but there are no backlit buttons for a dark home theater. There is an integrated cursor control for this.
LG uses the current version of WebOS as the smart TV operating system, which offers a little less choice than Android TV, but all relevant apps are available. Streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ are pre-installed and you can use services like Google Chromecast or Apple Airplay. The television supports many important audio and video formats – with the exception of the DTS sound system, which the predecessor of the C9 still had. The LG CX also does not forward DTS to the soundbar or AV receiver via eARC. Therefore, you must allow the player to decode DTS signals. For the HDR standards, LG relies on HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, but does without Samsung’s HDR10+.

The LG CX has a high-quality aluminum base that stretches almost the entire width of the TV.
The overall energy efficiency is good, and the LG OLED 55CX9LA has been awarded the EU-A energy label. We measured around 109W of power consumption in SDR mode at medium brightness, which is well within manufacturer specs and reasonable for a 55-inch TV. With the light sensor, the brightness can be automatically adjusted to the ambient light if desired, or you can activate the energy-saving eco mode. In the bright HDR mode, the power consumption increases to 145 W in the test. There are no deviations in the power consumption in standby mode.
The following note applies to the LG CX as to any OLED television: Since the pixels on OLED televisions wear out unevenly depending on the load, loud static picture elements can, in extreme cases, permanently “burn out” after many hundreds of seconds. Opening hours. use This partially reduces their luminosity, which can result in unwanted ghosting. This effect does not occur in films with constantly changing content, but if possible you should avoid constantly displaying still images or reduce the brightness in such scenarios. LG televisions also do the latter automatically.
You can buy the LG OLED 55CX9LA for around 1,900 euros. That’s a reasonable price for a 55-inch TV. The previous model 55C97LA now costs around 1450 euros. If you need more display area, you pay around 900 euros more for the 65-inch CX model and over 6,000 euros for the 75-inch model. Overall, however, LG’s price for the new CX model is fair. It will hardly be cheaper with the current models from other manufacturers.

At the time of testing the CX, the previous model, the LG OLED 55C97LA, was still one of the best TVs on our leaderboard (for testing). The image quality is very good, with very dark scenes there is only a slight loss of detail. HDMI 2.1 is also on board the C9. Otherwise, everything is fine with the rest of the equipment, sound and energy efficiency. If you don’t need the latest model, pay significantly less for the LG OLED 55C97LA on sale.
In our sophisticated TV measurement process, we use the LMK98-3 brightness and color meter to test televisions in our test lab. The most important assessment is the image quality, which accounts for 60 percent of the final rating. Among other things, we recorded the maximum brightness of the television, the contrast intensity of the 4 x 4 chessboard (consisting of white and black squares) and the maximum size of the color space that can be displayed.
After the picture quality, we put the hardware in second place. That’s 25 percent of the total. We evaluate the number of inputs and outputs such as HDMI, USB, RCA, jack, network and available tuners. The format support is just as relevant in this category as the range of functions and the user-friendliness of the Smart TV system.
Energy efficiency accounts for 10 percent of the overall rating. To measure SDR power consumption, we set the TVs to display a 10 percent white field with a brightness of around 250 cd/m² – so the sets are comparable in terms of efficiency. Additionally, we have an HDR power consumption measurement that we do for the same clip in HDR mode. We make no changes to the default settings. As a rule, televisions switch the brightness to maximum here.
