Latest Typhoon In The Philippines Update
A calmer-than-usual Pacific Northwest typhoon season in 2021 saved the worst for last, with the year’s final storm, Super Typhoon Rai, a beast. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Rai made landfall at 5:30 a.m. Z (1:30 p.m. local time) on December 16 on the island of Siargao in the southeastern Philippines.

Rai was a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds on land, but was undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle at the time and weakened to a Category 4 storm with 150 mph 30 minutes after making landfall. Rai continued to make multiple Category 4 and Category 3 landings for the rest of the day as he drifted through the southern and central Philippines. It is too early to know the impact of the typhoon, but the damage is undoubtedly significant.
Category 5 tropical cyclones making landfall are rare, because fortunately these storms are so rare. However, no country on Earth sees more Category 5 land than the Philippines, which borders the largest area of deep warm water on the planet. Rai is the third Cat 5 to land in the Philippines in the past two years. Supertyphoon Chanthu passed directly over the municipality of Ivana on the Philippine island of Batan (population 13,000) on September 11 as a Category 5 storm with winds of 165 mph. On November 1, 2020, Super Typhoon Goni hit the Philippine island of Catanduanes with sustained winds of 195 mph, making it the strongest tropical cyclone in recorded world history.
Strong typhoons can occur year-round in the Pacific Northwest, and the southern Philippines is no stranger to strong December storms. Two Category 5 landfalls in December have occurred in the Philippines: Supertyphoon Bopha (called Pablo in the Philippines), which hit Mindanao on December 3, 2012 as a Category 5 storm with winds of 170 mph, killing 1 900 people; and Super Typhoon Gilda, which hit Samar on December 18, 1959 with winds of 160 mph, killing 23 people. There was another Category 5 landfall: Super Typhoon Nock-Tenpeaked as a Category 5 storm with winds of 160 mph on Christmas Day 3, before making landfall in the Philippines three hours later as a Category storm. 4 with 155 mph winds, killing 24 people and causing more than $1 billion in damage. Nock-Ten was the strongest typhoon to make landfall so late in the year. The only stronger typhoon recorded so late in the year over the ocean was Super Typhoon Hester, which peaked as a Category 5 storm with winds of 185 mph on December 31, 1952, at about 1 000 miles east of the Philippines (Hester returned to sea without affecting land surfaces).

There have been 23 named storms, 10 typhoons and four major typhoons in the Pacific Northwest so far in 2021, with an ACE index of 192 (65% of average), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The 1991-2020 averages through Dec. 16 are 25 named storms, 16 typhoons, nine major typhoons, and an ACE index of 295. So 2021 is below average on all counts, and well below average on all. except the total number of named storms. . This is to be expected in a year with La Nina conditions, as storms tend to form closer to the Asian landmass and spend less time above water, giving them less time to intensify. However, with two Cat 5 landings, 2021 is exceptional in this regard.
Before Rai, 2021 was well below the annual average for deaths and damage in the Pacific Northwest, with just four typhoons making landfall, three of them Category 1. The deadliest named storm to date in the north -Western Pacific was Tropical Storm Kompas in October, which killed 43 people in the Philippines and one in Hong Kong. The most costly was Typhoon In-fa in July, which caused $2 billion in damage, mostly in the Shanghai region of China.
Rai is Earth’s sixth Category 5 storm in 2021, bringing the year closer to the 1990-2020 average of 5.3 Cat 5s per year. Other Cat 5 from 2021:

At 16. EST on December 16, Rai was located near the western edge of the Philippines, moving west at 21 mph as a Category 3 typhoon with winds of 125 mph. Rai is expected to turn more northwesterly and gradually weaken, skirting the coast of Vietnam on Sunday before dissipating south of China on Tuesday. While Rai may not be the last tropical cyclone of 2021 for the Northern Hemisphere, late December storms, as noted above, are not uncommon in the Pacific Northwest.
