The embroidery design file contains instructions on how to attach the image to the fabric. Designs consist of instructions that tell the embroidery machine how to sew the design. The file contains a lot of information such as thread color, thread order, stitch type and stitch angle. Since embroidery designs must contain all of this specific embroidery-specific information, you can perhaps see how they differ from any type of image format that only contains instructions for the computer to display.
Embroidery designs come in many different file formats that can be read by different brands of embroidery machines. For example, a Janome machine will only read the JEF file format, while a Brother embroidery machine will read PES files. Oh, it would be nice if there was a universal file format for embroidery, but alas, there isn’t.
And while there are a wide variety of different embroidery file formats, none of them look anything like an SVG file. So no matter which embroidery file format we start with, converting an embroidery design to an SVG file is the same for all of them.

Link designs are created using link digitizing software. You can create the embroidery files yourself, but you must have embroidery digitizing software to do so. There are several link digitizing software programs available, but high-quality digitizing software can be a little expensive and take some time to learn how to do. Many people who do machine embroidery simply buy embroidery files online rather than creating the design themselves with digital embroidery software.
An SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file is a two-dimensional image that is created and saved in vector format. Vector images are made up of shapes and lines, rather than pixels. This is why SVG files can be scaled without losing quality.
SVG files differ from other vector-based file formats in that it is a generic and universally recognized format. In fact, it is the only vector-based file format that can be viewed within a web browser. The SVG format was developed by the W3C (a non-profit organization that sets standards for the World Wide Web) in 1999 and consists of XML text.
The biggest advantage of a vector image is that it can be reduced and enlarged without losing quality. In other words, when you enlarge a vector file, it will still look as good as when it was smaller. The same cannot be said for pixel-based images such as jpeg. If you zoom in on a pixel-based image, you’ll start to see individual pixels.

Another reason you might want to convert an embroidery design to an SVG file is to speed up the application process. Some people take SVG out of their appliqué design so that their cutting machine will accurately cut their appliqué fabric based on the shape of the appliqué design.
Others like to use an exported SVG file of an embroidery design just to print it on paper and help position the embroidery in the project.
If you do hand embroidery, you may be interested in getting an SVG version of a machine embroidery design to use as the basis for a hand embroidery pattern. After converting to an SVG file, you can scale the design to the correct size for your hand embroidery project. You would then trace the pattern onto the fabric to know where to embroider.

There are several different methods you can use to generate SVG from your link design. The method you choose should be based on the type of SVG file you want to create and the tools available to you.
SevWhat-Pro is an inexpensive link layout editor that has an “export to SVG” feature. To convert your embroidery design to SVG, you need to start by opening the embroidery file (in whatever format you have) in the program.
As you know, embroidery designs can consist of various thread colors. So, to create an SVG file, you just need to select the thread color you want to work with. Then go to the Options menu and select “App Cutter”. When you click “OK”, the shape of the links will be exported to SVG format (as well as JPG). By default, these files will be saved in the same folder as the link file.
If you just Google: “convert PES to SVG” you’ll get several results that are web tools that offer free file conversion from one file format to another. I’ve tried a bunch of them and found very few to work very well. The best I found is: https://vvv.imageconvert.org.
Free Machine Embroidery File Format Converters
If you choose to use this online conversion, you must first select the file type you are starting with (PES – or the embroidery file format you are using) and the file format you are converting to (SVG). Then select the file and click “convert”. After a few sections, you will be able to download the converted files. And there you have your SVG!
Unfortunately, you may not like the quality of the SVG this tool creates. The problem with this online converter (as well as many others I’ve tried) is that they create vector shapes from each dotted line. In the image below you can see what my converted SVG file looks like – tons of vertices!
If you’re comfortable working with vector-based drawing programs, you can easily create a new outline around existing shapes and get a nice, clean SVG file. In the image below you can see how I traced the shapes using the vertices from the converted file as a reference point for my new and cleaned up shapes. I used Adobe Illustrator to trace the shapes, but you can use any vector drawing tool to do this task. For example, the free and open source program, Inkscape, would also work.

Ok, I know what you’re thinking, why use a pixel-based image editor to create your SVG? This may seem counter-intuitive, but it is a reasonable solution.
Here’s how you do it. First, go to Photopea. Open the SVG file within the program. Each layer contains a special element in the design. This is really helpful. You can work with each layer individually or combine them into one. I decided to make all the elements the same color, so I merged the layers. Just select all
