According to Apple, rapid battery drain is expected after every major update. This is because all apps are updated and optimized in the background. The company says it will take 48 hours to complete the optimization process. Below are different steps to manage the battery drain problem if you still have it 48 hours after updating your iOS device.

One of the first things you need to do is check which apps are consuming a lot of battery in the background and disable background app refresh permissions for such apps. It’s best to turn it off for any apps that don’t always need to run in the background. Note that this will also disable all notifications for such apps. But turn it off only for non-essential apps. Here are the steps to disable background app refresh for random apps.

The iPhone 12 lineup brings a number of new features beyond the design change, and one that may reduce battery life is 5G support. However, a growing number of users are finding that their iPhone 12 battery drains quickly in standby mode, even on Wi-Fi or when 5G is turned off.

It often happens that when you get a new phone, you find that the battery drains faster. But this is usually due to increased early usage, checking out new features, restoring data, checking out new apps, using the camera more, etc.

However, I notice that the iPhone 12 Pro drains when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest, a faster idle drain than I actually remember from new iPhone. My first instinct was to turn off mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I don’t really see any real difference (which makes sense since I’ve been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it). No matter what I try, it seems to crash unusually quickly. It’s not at a usable level or some kind of apocalypse, but I guess it’s kind of suspicious. I look at the battery report and it doesn’t show any real culprit, just a quick drop for no apparent reason. If anyone can share their standby battery with the 12 or 12 Pro I would greatly appreciate it.

As seen in the image above and below, a mobile engineer (not for Apple) pointed out the fact that the graph for battery usage should not fall the same for standby and active use. Interestingly, the chart below shows that battery drain occurs at about the same rate even when low power mode is turned on.
