It wasn’t until this year’s Apple iPad Pro 10.5 that I decided to try an iPad Pro and buy an Apple Pencil to see if the stylus had any value. With the ZAGG Rugged Messenger Case holding the Apple Pencil with the iPad Pro, I’ve used the Apple Pencil more than I’ve used the Surface Pen with my Microsoft Surface Pro devices.
It helps that the iPad Pro 10.5 is a much sleeker and lighter tablet than the Surface Pro 4, but I find the Pencil more ergonomic to hold, and I prefer the larger, harder tip of the Pencil over the smaller, softer tip of the Surface Pen. It’s the software experience on the iPad Pro that helps make using my Pencil more enjoyable than the Surface Pen.
Many websites and advertisements show some pretty amazing Apple Pencil creations, mostly by artists who have talent and skill. I’m a professional engineer, not an artist, and I have a hard time drawing stick people. I was hesitant to buy an Apple Pencil because I couldn’t see how to use it.
Fortunately, you can do more with the Apple Pencil than draw, draw cartoons, and create electronic masterpieces. One of the first things to do for those of us who aren’t artistically inclined is to start taking handwritten notes. I find it a little rude and distracting when people bring laptops to meetings and start typing while a speaker is speaking. Personally, I focus more when I take handwritten notes on a table or on a stand on my lap. In the last four conferences I’ve attended, I’ve used my Surface Pro and OneNote to capture notes during the event and never felt like I was blocking speakers or getting distracted by other notifications and apps.

There are many note-taking apps for the Apple iPad Pro, including the much-improved Apple Notes app in iOS 11. I’m running the iOS 11 beta on my iPad Pro, so I can take advantage of the Instant Notes feature where you tap your Apple Pencil on the lock screen to go to notes, find your handwritten text, and sketch with Apple Pencil in the body of your notes.
I’ve bounced between Evernote and OneNote for years, but I think I’m finally settling on OneNote as my primary cross-platform note app because Notes has better support for editing and marking up multiple differently formatted items. And better Apple Pencil integration. I’ve come to enjoy using OneNote on the iPad Pro 10.5, and with my engineering company using OneNote to capture and share more important engineering and project information, it’s the app that’s earned a spot in my dock.
Although I have no artistic skills when it comes to drawing things, I do have a penchant for photos and I enjoy easy editing on the iPad Pro. Color Splash and Affinity Photo are two of my favorite photo editing apps. Without the Apple Pencil, you won’t achieve the same results in these apps thanks to the fine selection you can make with the pencil tip. Affinity Photo has tons of tools, and many are optimized for the Apple Pencil, even taking advantage of the angle you hold the pencil and the pressure you apply to the screen with the pencil. It’s actually quite stunning, and you can spend hours editing photos with Affinity Photos and Apple Pencil.
I have been working as a professional naval architect for over 20 years and today my role is to review and perform quality control of drawings and calculations. Apple Pencil helps with these tasks when reviewing and annotating AutoCAD drawings on the iPad Pro. While the Apple Pencil isn’t essential for browsing Excel spreadsheets, I’ve found that Microsoft Excel has a Draw tab that works great with the Apple Pencil. You can perform the same actions in Excel as in OneNote, which can help you annotate spreadsheets or draw simple drawings to enhance your spreadsheets. I’ve found it helpful to insert a photo of a part of the structure on a boat and then annotate that photo in an Excel spreadsheet so clients can clearly understand what the calculation relates to their boat.
For the past few years I have been signing documents electronically and signing documents with the Apple iPad Pro and Apple Pencil is quick and easy. My signature with the Apple Pencil is similar to my signature with a standard pen or pencil. I hate trying to sign things with my finger on a touchscreen device, and I’m very happy to see that Apple is adding digital signature support to the Apple iPad Pro.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Apple Pencil is a very useful tool, both for artists and those of us who can’t draw well. Steve Jobs said about tablets: “If you need a stylus, you’ve failed.” But he was talking about using a stylus as the primary input device on a tablet. When Apple released the Apple Pencil in 2015, this quote was revived. Remind people that a) things have changed and b) Steve Jobs wasn’t always right.

It’s worth noting that the first generation Apple Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter to work with the iPad (10th generation). This pencil has a Lightning connector for charging, and the iPad (10th generation) has a USB-C connector.
Logitech Crayon is compatible with all iPad models 2018 and later. Logitech just released a new model with a USB-C connector, replacing the Lightning connector on the original model. Both versions of the Crayon are still available, but if you’re buying one now, you’re probably better off going with USB-C, as that will be the standard going forward.
The original Apple Pencil has a strange way of charging: you simply remove the loose cap and stick it into a Lightning port (on an iPad or iPhone). That’s right, the Pencil only comes straight out of the iPad, risking damage to both devices if you’re not careful.
The second-generation Apple Pencil attaches magnetically to the side of the iPad Pro and is centered using inductive charging. It also gives you a convenient way to carry the Pencil with your iPad.
