Inexpensive Ways To Update Kitchen Cabinets – Want to give your outdated or installed cabinets a creative look without the high price tag? Before you spend a lot of money to change them, try some of these tricks for a special, elegant look on a DIY budget. Most of these can be handled on your own over a long weekend!

We’re currently in the middle of building our Hacienda Hideaway kitchen, and I’ve spent the last year gathering all the dream inspiration to take my design to the next level. I thought it would be fun to share with you the best ideas I found – almost all of which I’m incorporating into my upcoming plans.

Inexpensive Ways To Update Kitchen Cabinets

No spoilers here – a new coat of paint is always the biggest bang for your buck. Most cabinet surfaces can be painted with a quality primer and special paint. I’ve had good results with Benjamin Moore Advances and Sherwin Williams Enamel Urethane, both designed for cabinets and highly recommended by professionals/DIYs.

If you don’t want to commit to a full color change, try painting just the upper, lower, or island cabinets. Introducing a secondary color will add visual appeal, and help prevent the space from feeling one-dimensional. Even going a few shades lighter or darker than your existing cabinets will give your kitchen a more custom feel.

A quick fix that can do a lot to update the look of your cabinets. Hardware is the ‘jewel’ of your kitchen, so you can add some charm here!

Today there are endless options at every price point, suitable for every design style. This is one area you don’t have to miss out on to find something that looks and feels luxurious. Sites like Amazon, Lowe’s and Home Depot and even Etsy have a great selection of reasonably priced cabinet accessories (these are my top budget picks).

How To Find Cheap Or Free Kitchen Cabinets

Options 1 and 3 are the easiest, but they limit your exchange options. Option 2 requires more work. You can also choose a solid handle style like this one that will cover the old holes.

This is the biggest investment (in time and dollars) on this list, but you can see it’s necessary to get the best results. If you’re happy with the overall layout of your kitchen but have outdated or damaged doors, you should look into refinishing your cabinets.

There are several companies (both local and online) that can create custom door and drawer units to match your existing cabinets. For other small changes, you can even upgrade your doors with pulls, which are often the best use of space.

Cheap Kitchen Decor On A Budget To Upgrade Your Kitchen

If completely replacing your doors / drawer fronts is not an option, consider updating the molding. This is one of my favorite DIY techniques for doors of any size (check out my easy DIY door upgrade tutorial).

This process is perfect for clapboard or shaker style doors when you want to take it to the next level. We’ve upgraded our shaker cabinet doors with a sleek design to give them a classy and special look. The magic is in the details!

How To Upgrade Kitchen Cabinets: Go From Cheap To Chic

Another idea to consider: Add a pattern to the bottom edge of your closet boxes for a more polished look.

Cabinet edges are another (often overlooked) opportunity to personalize your kitchen. This can be DIY using just a pattern, or thin cover panels like bead board.

Islands are a great place to add extra detail and help define the style of a room. In our hacienda kitchen, we chose to cover both sides of the cabinets and the island with a vertical ship:

Low Cost Diy Ways To Give Your Kitchen Cabinets A Makeover

This particular detail was at the top of my wish list for our Hacienda Hideaway kitchen. After gathering inspiration on Pinterest, we came up with a rainbow kick design and created it for our bedroom (full tutorial coming soon!)

Most people don’t even realize that there are options beyond the standard toe kick socket, which is one of the reasons they make such a statement – it’s so rare! You will be able to recognize them if you study the projects of leading interior designers. This Warmington & North kitchen was a big inspiration for designing our toe kicks:

In our kitchen, we added individual legs to the bottom of the cabinets, which is the easiest way to dress them.

In our Riverside Retreat kitchen, we installed a toe kick, which only required an additional 2×4 block to extend the surface of the toe kick, and finished with a quarter turn.

Diy Ways To Get New Countertops For Cheap

Any of these unusual options will make your cabinets look more like built-in furniture and create a sense of thoughtful and intentional design.

If you have enough storage space and like the idea of ​​displaying your favorite dishes or drinks, consider replacing one or more of your cabinets with open shelving.

We chose an entire wall of shelves in our kitchen, and we love how easy it is to access our everyday utensils. Although our kitchen isn’t huge and we could use some extra hidden storage, open shelving makes the space feel bigger, and gives it more character than a wall of cabinets.

I also chose this option for the Riverside Retreat kitchen, replacing the old upper cabinets with two sets of shelves.

Amazing Diy Countertops You Can Make For Cheap

An easy (and less permanent) alternative to open shelving would be to remove the doors from your upper cabinets for an ‘open’ feel. I like the idea of ​​painting the boxes the same color as the wall so they blend in and feel a little like a closet. You can play with it by adding wallpaper, or even peel and stick tiles on the back wall.

Here’s an alternative to getting rid of your upper cabinet doors: add glass inserts instead! It will still allow you to display your favorite dishes while keeping them dust-free. An interior glass company should be able to repair your existing doors and replace the interior panel with glass (panel doors may require further customization).

Feel free to get creative and consider using reeds, lead or stained glass, or painting a mullion. Take it a step further with unique options like reed strips, wire mesh or vintage glass.

This is a great place to add your personal style to your kitchen and try something new.

Ways To Update Your Kitchen Without Remodeling Story

Empty space above upper cabinets is one of my favorite design hacks, but luckily, it’s an easy fix! Filling this gap will make the room feel longer and more finished.

There are several ways to do this, and lots of good before/after tutorials online. The quickest solution requires framing the void, attaching filler pieces, crown molding, and painting to match your existing cabinets.

While you’re at it, consider creating your own fridge environment too. Covering the sides of an open refrigerator will make your kitchen feel brighter.

This is my favorite kitchen design trick. I used two old things in our kitchen – this wooden hutch that houses our drinkware, microwave and toaster:

Ways To Remodel A Kitchen On A Budget

Vintage pieces can be easily updated to suit your taste (both were) and are often cheaper than cabinets. They add a lot of character and will separate your kitchen from contractor-grade basics.

I try to incorporate at least one vintage piece in every room, and the kitchen is no exception. At Riverside Retreat, I found a used $50 kitchen table, painted it, and raised it on wheels, turning it into a mobile island:

Consider replacing one of your cabinets (top or bottom) with an old piece, or just add an old cabinet if there’s room.
