To update the software and maps on your TomTom GPS, you must first visit TomTom.com and download the TomTom Home software.
With the app installed, you’ll notice that you have a number of options and features to upgrade and customize your TomTom device.
Using the supplied USB sync cable, connect your TomTom GPS device to your PC or Mac and turn on the device. After a few seconds, you will be asked if you want to connect to your computer. Tap yes.

The TomTom XL 250 sits at the bottom of the heap these days when it comes to TomTom’s GPS offerings, and it seems obvious at first glance. When we first came across the XL 250 back in 2010, it was a nice, streamlined GPS product, but now it’s fallen down the pecking order to become TomTom’s entry-level product. It has a 4.3-inch 480×272-pixel resistive touchscreen with the older TomTom navigation system, although it doesn’t look very good in bright sunlight.
Very slow to get GPS lock. Very slow to redirect. Screen reflectivity is a problem in bright light. No lifetime card.

Important Information Regarding Maps & Services Updates
The XL 250 plugs into a flat disc that serves as the XL 250’s display mount. It’s a mixed proposition; in a way, we can appreciate how it makes storing the XL 250 easier once you’re done with it. On the other hand, attaching them to your windshield can be a decidedly chore, fraught with the danger of it slipping off while you’re cruising along at 110km/h. This is not a desirable activity for a GPS device, all things considered.
The first time we turned on the TomTom XL 250, we waited for it to sense a GPS signal for the first time.
Waiting, waiting, waiting. Finally, after seven longer than usual minutes, it was announced that enough satellites had been found to actually begin navigation. It’s normal for the system to experience some issues with GPS lock on first power-up, but these kinds of experiences were par for the course during our testing with the XL 250.
It’s slow to get a lock and slow enough to detect when you’re off the road too. It’s also slow to recalculate, so much so that on several occasions we were able to cycle through several plausible redirection options before we were done considering it.

Expect the older style of navigation maps on the XL 250. If you want a premium map view, you’ll need to go for a more expensive device such as the TomTom Go600. It’s possible to buy upgraded maps for the XL 250 – you’re promised a “fresh” map update out of the box – but the user interface will remain the same for life. Map data via Sensis and like any other GPS you can buy, it still has a gap when it comes to roads, rules and speed limits. It’s still wise to keep your eyes on the road and use your GPS as a supplement to existing road signs and rules, not as a replacement for your brain.
The XL 250 is in a very difficult situation indeed. Like the similarly priced Garmin Nuvi 52, it’s meant to be a “budget” proposition, but it has to compete not only with smartphone GPS apps that cost less and can do quite a bit more given the quality of smartphone screens, but also with the top tier of premium GPS devices that have come down in price over the past few years.
If you want and need GPS on a regular basis, it quickly becomes clear that it’s worth spending a little more on a full-fledged GPS solution than saving money and getting something less than optimal.
