For most users, installing Windows 11 updates happens automatically and in the background, just like everything else they do on their personal computer. Whether it’s a planned security update on Patch Tuesday or a zero-day vulnerability fix, Windows 11 updates just happen. But that’s not how it works for all potential upgrades.
How To Get To Update And Security Windows 10
Windows 11 advanced updates can only be applied if you actively participate in the process. Microsoft generally considers Windows 11 Advanced Updates to be optional driver or firmware updates, but when you take a closer look at them, you’re more likely to classify them as necessary, or at least very necessary. This short tutorial explains how to access and install advanced Windows 11 updates.
How To Download And Install The Windows 10 May 2020 Update
As mentioned above, Microsoft will note these updates in the Advanced and Optional section of the Update Settings control panel, but the installation requires your approval and participation. Before you begin, it would be wise to exercise caution and create a system restore point in case something goes wrong. Better safe than sorry.
When you’re ready, click the Windows Start button on the taskbar and select the Settings app (gear icon) from the list. Using the navigation bar on the left, select the Windows update item, as shown in Figure A.
In our example, you can see that we don’t have any official Windows 11 update to install. However, if we click on the item on this screen called “Advanced Options” (Figure B), we will access a new additional settings screen.
Scroll down this list of options until you find the entry labeled “Optional Update” and select it. You will be presented with a list of possible optional updates that Microsoft knows about but won’t install unless you allow them. In Figure B, there is no upgrade option to install, but if we switch to a different PC, it’s a much different story.

The items shown in Figure C, taken from an older PC, show a list of 10 Intel drivers and firmware updates that can be valuable in terms of stability, reliability, and overall performance.

Check the items you want to install (all 10 in our example) and click the button to install them. Depending on what is downloaded and installed, the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few seconds. It may also be necessary to reboot the system to complete the installation process.
After installing the Intel updates for my old multimedia PC, it seems to run more efficiently and perform better. Obviously, the new set of drivers and firmware includes some notable optimizations. If you’re looking for Windows Update, look no further than the new Windows 10 Settings menu. In an apparent effort to minimize (or perhaps eliminate) the Control Panel in Windows 10, Microsoft has removed Windows Update from the Control Panel and placed it in the new Settings menu.
You can find Windows Update on the Update & Security tab of the Settings menu (Start > Settings > Update & Security), along with the Windows Defender, Backup, Recovery, Activation, and Developer Options sections. If you want to become a Windows 10 Insider, there is a section for that as well.
Windows 7 Reminder: Get A Free Windows 10 Upgrade While You Can
The Windows Updates section is where you’ll find (almost) everything you need to manage your Windows 10 updates. You don’t have to go to this section to manually download or install updates, Windows 10 does it all for you, but you can come here to view your update history, change active hours, set a specific time. You can choose to schedule your reboots for a while and choose how your updates are installed.
In this section, you can also turn off the Windows 10 Peer-to-Peer Update system, which allows your PC to download updates from an online network of Windows 10 PCs from strangers. For more information on how to do this, check out our guide.
Windows Defender also has a section under the Update & Security tab, though it’s not outside of Control Panel like Windows Update. In this section, you can toggle various Windows Defender options, including real-time protection, cloud-based protection, and automatic submission of samples. You can also add exclusions, or files and programs to be excluded from any security scan, by clicking Add an exclusion.
In the Backup section, you can configure the backup settings: add an external drive for backup or click More options to view advanced settings (this will take you to the File History window in the Dashboard of control). If you created a backup using the Windows 7 Backup and Restore tool, you can restore your backup by clicking Backup and Restore (Windows 7), which will also take you to Control Panel.

Going back to a previous build will uninstall the latest Windows 10 update for your PC. There is a time limit to this option: you can only go back to a previous build within 10 days of upgrading. If you recently upgraded to Windows 10 from a previous version of Windows, you have 30 days to go back to your previous operating system.
Advanced startup restarts your PC so you can restore Windows from a system image, USB drive, or disc.
You can now activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 product key, which means you can perform a clean install of Windows 10 and still get the free upgrade promised to previous Windows users. To activate your copy of Windows 10, go to the Activation section and click Change Product Key, or click Go to Store if you want to buy a different edition of Windows.
The Developers section is designed for developers, people who create apps and programs for Windows 10. That doesn’t mean you won’t use it. If you want to transfer apps, for example, you’ll need to go to this section to enable that feature.

If you want to become a Windows Insider, someone who gets new versions of Windows 10 before it’s ready for the public, you can opt in here. You can also choose how you want to receive internal builds: in the fast ring or in the slow ring.
Fair warning: being an expert, especially a fast ring expert, is more of a headache than a sweet peek at new features. Microsoft does not promise that your computer will work as advertised or even if you install Insider builds.

KB5009566 is a required cumulative update because it contains the January 2022 Patch Tuesday security updates for vulnerabilities discovered in previous months.
