Like most people, if an event or call isn’t on my schedule, I won’t be there and will likely double book. Calendar apps are more or less necessary to keep your life and work under control, and outside of corporate organizations, the two most popular ones are Google Calendar and Apple Calendar.
How Often Does Google Calendar Update Subscribed Calendars
As they are used by default on both major smartphone platforms, comparing Google Calendar and Apple Calendar can be a bit tricky. Many people don’t really choose one over the other – they choose the one available on their phone. However, I’ve used both a lot and spent some extra time testing both apps side-by-side to get a feel for the subtler differences. Here’s what I found.
Google Calendar Tricks You’re Probably Not Using
Google Calendar and Apple Calendar are surprisingly complex services. In addition to having several native and web applications, both calendars have a backend that keeps everything in sync. To complicate matters further, you can (and many people do) use the Apple Calendar app on your iPhone to manage Google Calendars, but not the other way around. All this makes it difficult to draw hard distinctions, as there are many strange overlaps and edge cases.
With that in mind, I’m going to compare these services as a whole. I will note oddities and extreme cases when appropriate, but I will not dwell on them any longer than necessary.
Let’s start with a small comparison table. Don’t just count the stars to find the best app – read on to learn why these things matter. Or, as the case may be, why they don’t matter.
You can only really compare Apple Calendar to Google Calendar if you use at least one Apple device, otherwise Apple Calendar just won’t fit. (If you have an Android smartphone and a Windows PC, you could theoretically use Apple’s calendar via iCloud and the iCloud app for Windows, but that would be a rather strange experience. The iCloud web app is simple compared to the Calendar app on iPhone, iPad and Mac.)
How Do I: Sync Multiple Calendars On My Iphone Or Ipad?
Google Calendar is much easier to use across different devices. In addition to the main web app, there are apps for Android, iOS and iPadOS. It also supports CalDav which means you can connect it with other calendar apps including Apple Calendar apps which can fully manage calendars. This means that no matter what combination of devices you have, you can use the built-in calendar apps to manage your Google calendars by accessing them through the Google Calendar web app from any web browser.
With Apple Calendar, you can definitely use alternative calendar apps on Mac and iPhone that can manage your Apple calendars, but you can’t manage them on any device like you can with Google. You can also mark certain calendars as public and subscribe to them on other devices, but you won’t be able to add or edit events. Unless you only use Apple devices, it’s a bit inconvenient.
Regardless of the device, Apple Calendar and Google Calendar are easy to use. Both make it easy to add new events with a tap or click of a button, can import any event you’ve been invited to, and give you options for how you view your upcoming schedule. Both are great calendar apps that do everything you need to do with your calendar.
If you want me to take a closer look, Apple Calendar is probably a little simpler and Google Calendar is a little more functional.
Subscribe To Third Party Calendars From Team Calendars
For example, the Apple Calendar app for iPhone only offers a Today and Month view when you hold it vertically and a Today, Week and Month view when you hold it horizontally. Google Calendar for iPhone always offers today, 3 days, week, and month views. The problem is that Google Calendar’s weekly and 3-day views are terribly limited when the phone is in portrait mode. It’s usable, but far from perfect.
Both apps do a very similar job in very similar ways, so which app you prefer will largely depend on your personal preferences. Do you want an app that looks better but limits your choices a bit (Apple), or one that prioritizes function over form (Google)?
If you like Apple devices, Apple Calendar is the best service: it speeds up a lot of things behind the scenes and you don’t need to register new accounts. It doesn’t actually offer features that are significantly different from Google Calendar, but on an Apple device, Apple Calendar features are easier to set up and use.
With Apple Calendar, you get the same native apps on every device, including your Apple Watch, so you never have to use the web app. The buttons are in similar locations, the settings are almost the same, and most importantly, the iPhone app looks like an iPhone app, not an Android app running on an iPhone. This is especially noticeable with things like finger gestures, which simply don’t follow the normal iOS rules for Google Calendar.

Apple Calendar also integrates with Siri, so if someone emails you about an event or you book a hotel using Safari, you’ll be prompted to add them to the Calendar app. (Google Calendar has a similar feature, but it only works with Gmail.)
And if other members of your family use Apple Calendar, it’s really easy to create shared calendars. Simply open your calendar information, click Add Person, and select their contact information. (Again, Google Calendar has a very similar feature that works great; it only takes a step or two to get started using Apple devices.)
Ultimately, Google Calendar has much more advanced features and integrations than Apple Calendar. Some examples:
If you want to use the same calendar service in your personal and professional life, or if productivity opportunities are important to you, these features could be the deciding factor for you.
How To Automatically Copy Events From One Google Calendar To
But then again, you can always use a completely different program to add features to the Apple Calendar backend. I use Fantastical, which adds scheduling, conference call discovery, and Apple Calendar-like features.
That being said, there are few features that really separate the two programs. The advanced integration of Google Calendar and the ease of configuring Apple Calendar on Apple devices are the hardest limits you can draw, but there are ways around these two things. If you want automation on Apple calendar, just set up a single Google calendar and automate it with; you can manage it using the Apple Calendar app on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Likewise, when you log in to Google Calendar using the Apple Calendar apps, it will run in the background as seamlessly as iCloud. The setup process may require a few extra steps, but the overall user experience won’t change drastically.
In short, if you already use Google Calendar or Apple Calendar then there’s no real reason to bother switching unless you need a slightly different feature set.
