The cameras we decided to compare are offerings designed for people just dipping their toes in the DSLR waters, while others are aimed at those looking for a more powerful camera. Here are the six DSLRs we’ll be looking at:

Pentax cameras really show their quality when looking at their construction and sealing. The K30 is made of polycarbonate on a stainless steel chassis, while the K-5 II has a magnesium alloy chassis. Canon 250d Review
All DSLRs in our comparison offer the ability to shoot RAW or JPEG images. The Canon EOS 650D, Nikon D5200 and Pentax K-5 II all support 14-bit RAW files, which some say offer more options when editing files than 12-bit RAW.
Even entry-level DSLRs shoot Full HD video today, which was unthinkable a few years ago. Although 1080/30p seems to be standard, there are exceptions. The Sony A57 is capable of 1080/60p, while the Pentax K-5 II is up to 25p. Other cameras can record 60p when the resolution is pushed to 720.
Most cameras have the same level of standard cable connections, including mini HDMI, USB and microphone inputs. The only thing missing in this department is the Pentax K30 which omits HDMI and a microphone.
The Nikon D3200 and D5200 are compatible with the WU-1a wireless adapter that can be used via an Android or iOS app for image upload and remote viewing/shutter release.
Sony Zv 1f Review
Obviously, one of the biggest selling points of a DSLR system is that you can change lenses. That said, these kit lenses can be very affordable and are a great starting point if you’re into photography.
18-55mm zoom lenses have become standard kit with entry and mid-range DSLRs. On these product sensor bodies give 27mm to 82mm equivalent of 35mm which is a very useful range for general photography.
While the kit lenses are a little off at the telephoto end, they are better for video capture. These Nikon and Canon DSLRs have built-in vibration reduction to help smooth out handheld video … a little.
Each DSLR here uses a mount designed specifically for its manufacturer’s range, and there are plenty of lenses available to keep users happy. However, it’s worth remembering that even if you can install older lenses, you may not have all the features available, such as metering and autofocus.
Best Entry Level, Small Sensor Cameras
There is great value in entering the mid-range DSLR market. Features that would have cost you little just a few years ago are standard on these cameras, ranging from US$550 to $1,200 for body-only options.
The Nikon D3200 is the cheapest, coming in at $550 … if you’re in a place where it’s only available for the body. The Pentax K-5 II is the most expensive, but you’re getting a camera at the upper end of the mid-range market. Last year’s Sony A77 came in at a similar price, and may replace the Nikon D7000 or Canon 7D.
Buying a kit lens is a no-brainer, especially if it’s your first DSLR. Kit lenses often add $50-100 to the cost of a new camera, covering a wide range of telephoto applications.
It’s amazing to see how far DSLR cameras have come in recent years. It wasn’t long ago that these entry-level and mid-range camera components were available on professional cameras … and cost thousands of dollars. All the cameras here are more than capable.
