Galaxy S20 Ultra 100x Zoom – Samsung is introducing its latest flagship series of smartphones, the Galaxy S20, with 5G chips and a new camera system capable of 100x zoom.
The world’s biggest smartphone maker unveiled the devices at an event in San Francisco on Tuesday, hoping that faster screens, an overhauled camera system and a variety of sizes will be enough to boost sales and beat rivals Apple and Huawei.

The Galaxy S20 has a 6.2-inch screen and a triple rear camera, while the Galaxy S20+ has a 6.7-inch screen and a quad rear camera. Both have cameras with 3x hybrid optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom.

The large Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch screen and a four-camera system at the back. A 108MP primary camera and a 10x hybrid optical zoom lens are the two main features, with a periscopic arrangement that uses a prism that lets light from the side into the phone’s body, similar to what Huawei used on its P30 Pro in the past year. 5x zoom. Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight, said that “Samsung has definitely improved the camera capabilities in the new S20 line”, but in some areas the South Korean firm is “just playing catch-up” with some of its Chinese rivals, who have been using versatile periscope zoom modules for some time.
Samsung’s innovations in advanced zoom handling, such as the new window-in-window viewfinder with more than 30x magnification, are worth the additions, Wood said.

All three models have new AMOLED screens with a 120Hz refresh rate — twice as fast as standard smartphone screens and faster than the 90Hz screens used by OnePlus and Google last year — making the device smoother for scrolling and other quick interactions . .
On the front, the devices resemble updated versions of the 2019 S10 models, with a full-screen display on the front, a new central selfie camera at the top, and curved glass on the sides. The back is all glass, with a large camera bump in the top left, similar to what Apple and Google have used recently.
While the S20 will be available in either 4G or 5G versions, the S20+ and S20 Ultra will only be available in 5G. All three models have at least 128GB of storage and a microSD card slot to add more 8, 12, or 16GB of RAM, fast cable and wireless charging, larger batteries, and in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint scanners to unlock devices.
“The challenge Samsung faces with every other smartphone maker is how to stand out from the endless stream of black touchscreen rectangles of the same shape,” Wood said. “5G support in all three variants of the S20 range is a key factor in ensuring that consumers get a purchase in the future, and the camera is certainly a standout, especially on the flagship S20 Ultra.”

The station orbits the Earth about 16 times a day and is often visible to the naked eye. So I thought, why not give it a shot with the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 100x camera?

So I found out when and where the International Space Station was supposed to fly past my apartment and tried to figure it out – space, rendezvous, zoom. I also compared the Space Zoom to the iPhone 11 Pro’s zoom to see how much better the S20 Ultra’s camera is than the iPhone’s.
The results are complex. I witnessed some great flybys, but actually capturing the station with the phone proved difficult. Even with a $2000 tripod, the shutter lag made it nearly impossible to capture anything flying across the sky at the speed of the ISS. When I shot the thing at 10x and 30x, it looked like an abstract expressionist painting. Or just a blob… depends on how you look at it. But the Galaxy S20 Ultra crushed the iPhone 11 Pro in our daytime zoom test. Focusing on the gilded New York Life building about four miles from my roof, I was able to capture important details. The iPhone 11 Pro camera maxed out at 10x digital zoom, and while the photo itself turned out fine, I cropped the image to roughly fit the Samsung 100x photo frame. It really wasn’t even close.
Now, none of these 100x photos can be used for anything other than a fun party. That being said, my party trick was to try and photograph the International Space Station, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So, I’m going to say that the cosmic zoom trick is working for me, at least for now. The recently announced Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra offers a new feature that the company calls “Space Zoom,” which allows the cameras to offer a combined optical and digital zoom of 100 times. That sounds like one of the biggest zooms we’ve seen on a regular smartphone, but there’s a lot of nuance to how Samsung’s phone achieves that figure. In short, it’s all about the combination of optical zoom hardware, image processing and an exceptionally high resolution sensor.
At lower zoom levels, Samsung relies on a “folded” 4x telephoto lens that combines with a 48-megapixel sensor behind a hole on the back of the phone. Then, between 4x and 10x zoom, the phone offers what Samsung calls “lossless hybrid optical zoom,” which relies on a combination of sensor cropping and binning, where multiple pixels are combined into one larger pixel. The use of the word “lossless” indicates that Samsung does not intend to lose quality with the 10x zoom. Then between 10x and 100x zoom, the phone uses similar techniques, but it’s digital zoom, which inevitably means less detail as you zoom.

This 100x zoom is exclusive to the S20 Ultra. Meanwhile, the S20 and S20 Plus offer a hybrid optical zoom of 3x instead of 10x, while their maximum zoom level is 30x instead of 100x.
Samsung’s method of achieving 100x is not entirely unique. For example, Huawei used a similar “folding” zoom lens on the P30 Pro last year. In Huawei’s case, there was an 8-megapixel sensor that supported a 5x optical zoom telephoto lens, which could then add data from the main 40-megapixel camera sensor to provide up to 10x lossless hybrid zoom. Based on our experience, we believe this lossless claim is 100 percent accurate with a slight loss of detail at 10x zoom, but overall a slight drop in quality. The overall digital zoom went up to 50x, but well-lit images stopped being usable beyond about 32x. Meanwhile, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom offers up to 60x software zoom and uses a similar hybrid system to zoom up to 10x. During our testing, the Oppo produced sharp 13-megapixel zoom shots with good lighting that faded quickly at night.
One of the big hardware differences between the Samsung, Huawei and Oppo phones is that Samsung is using higher-resolution sensors for the S20 Ultra’s periscope and main cameras. While the P30 Pro’s telephoto lens is 8MP and the Reno 10X Zoom’s 13MP, Samsung uses a 48MP periscope sensor. Additionally, the S20 Ultra’s main camera has an incredibly high-resolution 108-megapixel sensor, compared to the Huawei’s 40-megapixel sensor and the Oppo’s 48-megapixel sensor. Combining the two sensors gives the Samsung phone access to more data, resulting in more detailed images.
Increasing sensor resolution can cause its own problems, such as poor low-light performance due to smaller individual pixels. Samsung claims to have found a fix for these issues, but we won’t know for sure until we test the feature ourselves.
