Despite launching one of the most acclaimed phones of 2019 in the Galaxy S10, Samsung is definitely not done for the year. Oh no, the company isn’t pulling the chairs out of storage, as it now has a total of two Note 10 devices up its sleeve.

Yes, you read that right, there are a couple of Note 10 smartphones that are decidedly different this year. The regular phone may be little more than warming up – you can read my initial impressions here – but the Note 10 Plus is where you’ll find all the extra benefits. Just don’t come crying to me when you find out how much it costs.
There’s a lot to like about the Note 10 Plus, especially when you compare the two phones. Not only does it have a larger 6.8-inch WQHD+ display, but it also benefits from 12GB of RAM, supports faster charging speeds of up to 45W, has a larger 4300mAh battery, as well as an additional depth-of-field camera and a microSD card slot. . It can also be downloaded in a 5G version, although you have to pay at least an extra £100 for that option.
The differences, however many there are, end there. Both Notes are the first to run Samsung’s Exynos 9825 chipset and run the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 9 Pie, with Samsung’s One UI layered on top. Finally, the S Pen returns with some gesture-based upgrades, but more on those later.
You’ll have to dig deep if you decide that Samsung’s biggest phablet is the next phone for you. Following in Apple’s footsteps, the Note 10 Plus costs £999, with the 5G version starting at £1,099.

And unlike previous years, you can’t even choose internal storage. The Note 10 Plus comes with 256GB of storage, although this can be expanded with a microSD card. Meanwhile, the 5G model can be configured with 512GB of storage for £1,199, if the £1,099 256GB version isn’t enough for you.
That’s a lot of money, but Apple’s line of smartphones is even more expensive. Perhaps its closest competitor, the iPhone Xs Max starts at £1,099 and has a paltry 64GB of non-expandable storage. You’ll need to shell out a total of £1,249 if you want the same amount of space as the Note 10 Plus, and it still won’t let you plug in a microSD card.
Of course, Apple isn’t the only other manufacturer in the big phone business. Android rivals include Huawei’s P30 Pro, which can currently be bought for around £800, while Samsung’s other flagship, the Galaxy S10 Plus, comes in at a similar price.
As you might expect, considering how much Samsung wants you to pay for one, the Galaxy Note 10 is far from lightweight. It’s certainly not one of Samsung’s wallet-friendly A or J series devices – this is a phone that positions itself as one of the best choices for someone with big wads of cash to spend.

Just like its slightly cheaper sibling, the Note 10 Plus is Samsung’s best-looking phone yet. It has a massive 6.8-inch screen – Samsung’s largest phone screen to date – that almost fills the front of the device. A circular punch-hole notch, housing the 10-megapixel selfie camera, eats it up at the top, but with a generous 95% screen-to-body ratio, there’s not much room for it anywhere else.
There’s a lot that’s special about the way the Note 10 Plus looks and feels, with a glossy Gorilla Glass back, rounded silver-tone edges and corners, and four cameras neatly lined up vertically on the back of the phone. It’s also the first Note with a built-in fingerprint reader for secure unlocking, bringing it in line with the Galaxy S10.
Despite that huge display, the Note 10 Plus doesn’t feel particularly large. It’s 77mm wide, 162mm tall and 7.9mm thick – not much bigger than most flagship smartphones, and not bulky either, weighing 196g. The only thing I don’t particularly like about the design is the stiff top and bottom The sides of the phone, as well as the sharp corners, tended to dig into my palm too much. I can’t imagine many people will be happy with Samsung’s removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Samsung’s S Pen has also received a slight upgrade. It still fits in the bottom right corner of the phone as usual and can be used for note-taking and drawing even when the screen is off. However, Samsung has introduced what it calls “Air Actions,” which let you spin the S Pen — like a magic wand — to perform certain actions.

It only works with compatible apps, like the native camera app, for example. All you have to do is press and hold the button on the side, and wave your hand left right or vice versa and the app will switch between recording modes. Rotate your hand up and down and it will alternate between the front and rear cameras, and you can also rotate the stylus clockwise or counterclockwise to zoom in and out.
It’s definitely a neat little trick for fun, and it comes in handy when your phone is on a tripod or out of reach. I wish you had more control with the zoom function – currently you can only zoom in and out in tiny 0.1x increments, which is quite slow.
However, the S Pen isn’t just a washed-up gimmick, it’s actually an extremely useful note-taking device. With up to ten hours of standby time, you can draw even when the phone is locked and use it to sketch a specific part of the screen you want to capture. You can also use the S Pen to highlight parts of a web page or document to translate the text into the desired language.
In addition to being 0.5 inches larger diagonally, the resolution of the Note 10 Plus’ Dynamic AMOLED, HDR 10+ display is higher: QHD+ (3,040 x 1,440). It’s not that the Note 10 Plus had an upgrade, it’s that the vanilla Note 10 model was scaled down: all Note series phones have used QHD panels in every iteration since 2014.

It’s the first of two phones I’ve tested, and the Note 10 Plus’ display performed quite well in our internal tests. Color reproduction on the screen is excellent, striking a perfect balance between fantastic saturation and color accuracy. Measuring the screen with a colorimeter, it hit 96.2% of the sRGB color gamut in the browser using the phone’s “natural” screen profile and peaked at 715cd/m² with the auto-brightness setting on.
HDR 10+ is also still supported, so movies and TV shows on Netflix and Prime Video that support this standard look spectacular. Colors seem to pop off the screen, and since it uses AMOLED technology, you can expect flawless response with inky black levels and essentially perfect contrast.
Under its skin, the Note 10 Plus uses Samsung’s fresh in-house silicon, the Exynos 9825. This is the first time we’ve seen anything powered by this chipset, which is built on the more efficient 7nm manufacturing process and consists of a quad-core Cortex-A55, Cortex – A75 dual-core processor and another custom dual-core processor. However, as usual, other territories outside the UK will have Qualcomm’s equivalent processor – in this case, the new Snapdragon 855 Plus.
The Note 10 Plus also benefits from an overly generous 12GB of RAM for multitasking, instead of the standard model’s 8GB of RAM. In terms of storage, you’re limited to 256GB, but with the option to expand by another 1TB via a microSD card. The Note 10 Plus’ battery is also larger at 4200mAh and supports charging speeds of up to 45W – although the included charger is only 25W.

In terms of speed, there are absolutely no surprises. The Note 10 Plus is as powerful as they come, and Samsung delivers a phone that’s instantly responsive, beating our CPU benchmark tests. It’s faster than both the P30 Pro and the Galaxy S10 Plus in the Geekbench 4 single-core and multi-core benchmarks, though it’s not as fast as the iPhone Xs Max – which is currently the fastest smartphone on the market.
Gaming performance is just as impressive, even at the phone’s native WQHD+ screen resolution. This is an area where the Galaxy Note 10 Plus greatly improved on its predecessor, achieving a perfect average of 60 frames per second in the GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 display test and an impressive 24 frames per second in the GPU-intensive Car Chase test.
