Recently, Samsung launched the company’s most premium phone Galaxy Z Fold2 in India at Rs 1,49,999. It comes with a lot of improvements over its predecessors in terms of design and internal hardware.

I spent some time with the new Galaxy Z Fold2 and here’s my take.

One of the biggest changes we noticed in the Galaxy Z Fold2 is the large front cover display. Compared to the first generation model, it comes with a 4.6-inch HD+ AMOLED. Its successor sports a 6.2-inch HD+ (2260 x 816p) Super AMOLED cover display with a pixel density of 386 ppi (pixels per inch) and a 10MP camera. It is best used for typing messages, viewing notifications and mainly during photography sessions. A large viewfinder on the screen tells us exactly how much scene information is captured in the camera.
Inside, it’s a wide QXGA+(2208 x 1768p) 2X 7.6-inch ultra-thin AMOLED infinity-fold display with 22.5:18 aspect ratio, 373 ppi pixel density. The large notch in the top right corner seen on its predecessor has been replaced by a smaller 10MP sensor, which increases the dynamic display area.
The display supports a display refresh rate of up to 120Hz and it improves the viewing experience by several notches compared to other phones in its category. I enjoy watching hi-res content, reading news, browsing social media platforms and playing games on the big screen. At first, I couldn’t help but notice the crease in the middle of the foldable screen, but after a few hours, like most people I forgot it existed while handling the phone.

Another big change coming to the Galaxy Z Fold2 is the improved hidden hinge that houses the phone’s ultra-thin glass. The company used a new Quad CAM mechanism to integrate the hinge with the body of the device. This technology enables a new Flex Mode experience where users can bend the phone at different angles (between 75 and 115 degrees) and remain stable without falling back due to its weight (282g). This is useful when typing messages on a large screen.
Also, a small brush with fine bristles is placed in the gap between the body and the hinge housing to remove dust and unwanted particles. The gap is much smaller than the Galaxy Z Flip and notes that the company has used revolutionary slim cutting technology, modified fiber composition and adjustable fiber density. This further increases the durability of the device.
It has a volume rocker on the right side and just below, there is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, which doubles up as the power button. It does a good job in terms of quick response to thumb touch and it is nice to note that it has a low false rejection rate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5g Arrives In Malaysia For Rm7,999; Pre Order Starts 11th September
Mystic bronze models like the Galaxy Note20 series look beautiful in sunlight and are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus on the cover screen, the industry’s toughest screen protector. However, Gorilla Glass 6 is covered over the metallic back.
The only caveat is that the company doesn’t offer a cover case with the retail box and users will have to pay Rs 4,999 for Samsung’s premium leather cover for the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
Unlike Samsung’s other premium phones that come with an Exynos chipset, the company is offering the Galaxy Z Fold 2 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful processor among Android phones in the industry. It is powered by Adreno 650 graphics engine, Android 10 based on OneUI 2.5, 12GB RAM and 256 storage. The Galaxy Z Fold2 runs as smooth as anything you throw at it.
The graphically rich Asphalt 9: Legends- Epic arcade car racing game is a lot of fun to play and the loud sound of car engines coming out from the two speakers against each other in landscape mode makes for a captivating experience.

On Geekbench, the Galaxy Z Fold2 scored an impressive 982 and 3056 in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. Additionally, the integration of Microsoft Office applications and the DeX wireless connectivity feature enhance productivity.
The software is also great for flexible modes especially for typing text, video chatting on Google Duo and there is a split screen mode for multi-tasking. Rest assured, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will serve you well in any task.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a 4,500 mAh battery and can easily last a full day with normal usage. The retail box comes with a 25W charger and the device also supports wireless charging.

Additionally, the device has a 5G modem. Initially, it may not be useful for Indian consumers, but when traveling to Europe or North America when the Covid-19 situation improves, the super fast internet experience will come in handy.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 may not have the high-end camera hardware of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, but it’s still better than some other premium phones on the market. It comes with a triple camera module – 12MP Ultra Wide (f/2.2, 1.12µm pixel size, 123 deg FOV), 12MP Wide Angle (Super Speed Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.8µm pixel size, 83 deg FOV) and 12MP telephoto camera (with PDAF, f/2.4, OIS optical image stabilization, 1.0μm pixel size, 45 degree FOV). It also supports dual OIS, 0.5x out and 2x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, HDR10+ recording and tracking AF.
Takes amazing photos in the sun and at night. Subjects, especially flowers, appear in very rich colors and the phone’s edge detection capabilities in portrait mode are also good, provided you have a steady hand.

In night mode, the camera hardware and optimized software do an admirable job of reproducing the true colors of objects in the scene despite the lack of light.
The cover screen and inner display have a 10MP camera that takes great photos in natural sunlight. The company offers a lot of editing tools and augmented reality (AR) tools, turning a gloomy photography session into a fun activity.
The Galaxy Z Fold2 is a well-refined sequel to the first-generation model and built to last. Also, unlike other rival brands, Samsung does not compromise on the internal hardware to cater to its innovative foldable phone designs. It combines a powerful Qualcomm processor, long battery life and a good camera on par with premium phones.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a quantum leap from the original Fold. And it is necessary for a high price. The front display is much larger, 5G is standard and the ugly notch on the inside is gone. In addition, this foldable is more durable than the first layer.
