The company, which went public in 2017, reported more than $1 billion in net sales in 2021, up 58% from the previous year. According to Funko CEO Andrew Perlmutter, the secondary market for Funko Pops is estimated to be between $700 million and $1 billion.
Pops made so much money that they even became a target for thieves. A shoplifter made off with a Funko Pop from a Barnes and Nobles in Manhattan on September 10, knocking an elderly woman unconscious. Meanwhile, earlier pop robberies took place in Orlando and Washington.

The Pop sold for $100,000, the highest ever Funko Pop ever sold. After the private sale, Chavez started seeing fake figurines. “That’s when you see the market turn into a serious collectible, people start making fakes,” he said.
Funko’s figurines parallel Beanie Babies, the stuffed toys that became collectibles in the 1990s. However, unlike the Beanie Babies debacle, Chavez believes Funko Pops are a true collectible, not a fad.
Support from third-party companies is a sign that Funko Pops is here to stay, Chavez said, pointing to the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) in the US. An established grading company that has certified Funko Pops and will soon start grading quality vinyl figurines.

While the most valuable Pops typically come from limited editions, Perlmutter says the company doesn’t cut production on purpose. “It’s not for secondary value purposes,” the Funko executive said. “When we do a limited assignment, it’s usually because we know the audience isn’t that good.”
Perlmutter also believes that nostalgia plays a big role in the rise of pop characters — The Golden Girls and Bob Ross were Funko’s most successful drops. Perlmutter said that while other toy companies market to mothers with children, Funko Pops is aimed at mothers themselves, with the average age of Funko buyers being 35. “It’s a completely different demographic.”
According to Kirk Staff, production manager for Alabama-based VVGS, Funko Pops have also become currency for autographs. “You used to get an 8×10 poster signed by Robert Downey Jr. and now you get an Iron Man Funko Pop,” he said.
Employees believe Pop’s appeal lies in its diversity. “Generally, there’s a musician or a TV show or a book, something that you have a personal connection with,” he said. “Pops are a reflection of what you love.” Funko is headquartered in Everett, Washington and is home to Disney, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Marvel, DC Comics, and more. so much fun to do near Seattle with kids who love it! The whole area near the castle is very beautiful. I recommend taking the time to walk. I did it quickly, but my wife noticed more than I did.
Plus, they have some really cool Disney items that are perfect for a trip to Disneyland or Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii.
While I was fascinated by the Disney stuff, my preschooler focused on the Star Wars area. It’s easy to see why.
