Ahead of the highly anticipated new HBO series The Last of Us, which launches in Germany at the same time as the US premiere on Sky WOW on January 16, we look at the different settings and locations of the games in the successful game series from Naughty Dog and what to expect in the HBO series adaptation.

The action in “The Last of Us” takes place in the post-apocalyptic United States, where an infection caused by a fungus 20 years ago wiped out a large part of humanity. The fungal infection affects the brains of its victims, turning them into aggressive mutants (called Runners, Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters) as their bodies slowly deteriorate.

As for the initial situation of the story, as it can also be found in the HBO series. The story itself begins with a prologue in Travis County, Texas, where we meet Joel, who loses his 12-year-old daughter Sarah during the outbreak of the infection and ends up in Boston’s quarantine zone. Here he meets the leader of the Fireflies, who asks him to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of the quarantine zone and into a Firefly hideout.
Joel and Ellie’s journey across America takes them from Lincoln, Pittsburgh, to Joel’s brother in Jackson County, and finally to Salt Lake City, where the fireflies’ laboratory is hidden. The main game ends upon arrival in Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel’s brother lives in a relatively safe community.
The long-awaited sequel to The Last of Us has a much larger and more open world than its predecessor. It picks up a few years after the first game in Jackson, Wyoming. Ellie is now a young woman and has found a safe haven with her fatherly mentor, Joel. After a horrific incident that changes Ellie’s peaceful life in one fell swoop, she embarks on the difficult journey to Seattle, a good 1,400 km northwest.
In the HBO series, as in the first game, the story begins in a quarantine zone in the city of Boston, where Joel meets and takes care of the young Ellie. However, the scenes in the series were not shot in Boston itself, but primarily in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Much of the filming took place here, including the stunning backdrop of Waterton Lakes National Park (for the Colorado scenes) and in Canmore, Alberta, which was modeled after the Jackson, Wyoming scene for the ‘e games.
Other important locations from the games such as Saint Mary’s Hospital can also be found in the TLOU series. To shoot the Pittsburgh scenes for the TLOU series, the entire film crew moved to Kansas City, Missouri.

As already mentioned, the prologue about Sarah in the first episode is almost identical to the gameplay. Sarah and Joel celebrate his birthday, the watch is given away, Sarah wakes up alone in the house at night and drives with Joel and Tommy to the infected city. The autograph in particular makes it clear that a feature film adaptation should not follow the source directly.
On PlayStation we have free camera controls here. While this is not fully interactivity, it allows us to experience Sarah’s dire situation from a much more personal perspective. The chaos in the city that follows is also conveyed much better in the game than in the series. The game section is clearly intended as a guide and introduction, teaching us how to work the camera and getting to know the characters a bit. Without the possibility of this interaction, the scene seems rather cramped, as we mostly see the inner workings of the car, like in the game. The section also fails to capture the mood of the game as convincingly.
