Galaxy A12 Blue 128 Gb
Samsung introduced the Galaxy A12 as the direct successor to the Galaxy A11 in November 2020 and will be brought to the US in April 2021. It was replaced by the Galaxy A13 series.
The Galaxy A12 offers a total of six different configurations to fit in as one of the cheapest Samsung phones, starting with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, only three are currently available in the United States (listed above). Wherever you go, you’ll have access to all four color options: red, blue, black and white.
Our Samsung Galaxy A12 comes with Android 10, although the Android 11 update with Samsung’s One UI 3.1 is available via OTA. It also runs the July 1, 2021 Android security patch. You should get two years of software updates and a total of four years of security patches, which would take the Galaxy A12 into late 2024 or early 2025. Our unit hasn’t received Android 12 yet, but it will roll out before then. . .
Once you get past the software, you’ll find the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC powering Samsung’s entry-level device. RAM and storage options are good at 6GB and 128GB, and you can go even further with a microSD slot. A 5,000mAh battery and a 6.5-inch HD+ panel bring it all together, and the display is finished off with an Infinity-V notch. In India, there is a variant of the Helio P35 that replaces the Helio P35 for Samsung’s own Exynos 850 chipset.

Samsung has omitted the wired earbuds from the packaging this time around, though it still offers a charging block and USB-C cable. If you need help, you can get a SIM ejector tool and a basic start-up guide. The Samsung Galaxy A12 is also available on Verizon, UScellular and AT&T.
The budget-friendly phone looks almost set to give it an air of quality with the addition of a mirrored back and fingerprint magnet. Fortunately, the Samsung Galaxy A12 bucks the trend, opting instead for a matte finish that feels smooth in the hand. I appreciate the raised diagonal ridges, they add a little extra grip to the overall design.
A large 6.5-inch display means a good grip is essential if you hope to avoid the smaller ones. While the display remains at HD+ resolution, it is still large enough and clear enough to catch the latest events. We’ll always appreciate the headphone jack, and wired headphones are the best way to enjoy the sound on the Galaxy A12 instead of the mono speaker on fire.
Samsung has also decided to ditch the rear-mounted fingerprint reader on the Galaxy A11. However, the Galaxy A12 uses the side-mounted option, which is much faster, easier to use, and cleans up the overall look of the device.

Adorning the rear panel is Samsung’s camera array, capped by a 48MP main shooter that’s great for outdoor use for a budget camera phone (check out an example later in this review). You can also tap into macro and ultrawide cameras for added flexibility. The camera app is pretty easy to navigate, although it takes a second or two to hunt down the macro button because it’s hidden under the More tab.
Samsung One UI is one of the best Android skins on the market today and it looks great on the Galaxy A12. Specifically, the Samsung Free app is like the Google Discover feed, but with a kick. Instead of giving you news, Samsung Free brings Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News and Instant Plays into one. Best of all, you don’t have to spend money on anything.
The Galaxy A12 is also a battery wizard, at least when it comes to charging. I had no problem using it for a good couple of days between light gaming, answering emails and browsing social media.

The Samsung Free app would be a nice addition to the overall package, but Samsung doesn’t stop there when it comes to how much to add to Android. Unfortunately, the Galaxy A12 has a ton of apps that take up extra space. It comes with a full suite of Google apps and Samsung apps, which makes for a lot of redundancy. There are even Microsoft options like Office, OneDrive, and Outlook. You’ll also have a Samsung Store, a Galaxy Store, and a Galaxy Store open – how many people need two Samsung Stores and a Play Store?
The good news is that you can at least uninstall Microsoft-based Blot, but that won’t do much to help the Galaxy A12’s tendencies. MediaTek’s Helio P35 isn’t always up to the task of powering the 6.5-inch display, and jumping between apps can slow things down. Limited RAM and storage doesn’t help, so you might want to look into the 4GB RAM/64GB storage version if you can find it.

While Samsung has packed a solid main lens into the Galaxy A12, the selection of exciting peripherals isn’t always good. The macro lens only offers 2MP, and it took a few tries to get the sample image sharp enough. You won’t find a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12, so you may have to experiment with trial and error during the day.

While all phones add a little magic to pressing the shutter button, the end result of photos taken on the Galaxy A12 is often better than the camera app shows. For example, the low-light image below looks darker when I press the shutter button, and none of the comparison images look as clean as you can see. Most of the time, this is a nice surprise at the end, but it makes your evaluation a bit more difficult. As you can see in my hair example, portrait mode isn’t very good at edge detection either.
Samsung may have a solid battery in the Galaxy A12, but the 15W charging speed isn’t strong, even for a phone as cheap as this. After 30 minutes I can only charge from 3% to 23% and full charge takes more than two hours.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is a strong upgrade to the Galaxy A11 in almost every way. This budget-friendly phone offers a great 48MP primary camera, excellent battery life, and Samsung’s sleek and attractive One UI software. Unfortunately, the peripheral camera lacks punch and the sluggish performance is disappointing, but that’s an expected trade-off at this price point.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an upgrade from the Galaxy A11 and is perfect for first-time smartphone buyers.
Samsung Galaxy A12 Review, Pros And Cons
It’s been a while since the launch of the Galaxy A12, and Samsung’s budget phone has been replaced several times. Samsung went for the Galaxy A14 5G ($199 at Amazon), which switched to a more premium-feeling Galaxy S23-inspired design. The new model is set to receive more software updates due to its 2023 launch date. You can also check out the Motorola Moto G 5G ($199 at Amazon), which sits in the same spot in Motorola’s lineup. While it can’t live up to Samsung’s commitment to updating, it does have the same plastic design and 15W power cable. Another option to consider is the OnePlus Nord N300 ($228 at OnePlus). The most affordable Nord is all about simplicity, with just two rear cameras and a clean black design. The cable charging speed is also mentioned above.
