There’s no denying that the Note 20 Ultra is a stunning device that feels very premium to the touch, with a smooth and glossy back. So much so that the Note 10 looks very dated in comparison. It’s also more attractive than the S20 Ultra, which has a gray glass on the back that looks really dull and drab in comparison.
Unlike the “regular” Note 20, which is made of reinforced polycarbonate (read: plastic) and metal, the Ultra is made of metal and glass with a matte like back. My review unit is the color Mystic Bronze, which looks like rose gold depending on the light.
The combination of materials certainly adds a luxurious feel to the device, but it also adds weight. Like the S20 Ultra, I usually have to hold the phone with both hands to keep it from dropping.
A phone that is big, heavy and made of glass makes for a fragile combination. As premium as it feels, there were times when I just wanted to put it on the back and see – to make up for the fear of accidentally dropping it and seeing it break.

I’m not the biggest fan of rose gold either, mainly because I’m tired of seeing all the women’s smartwatches these days. But it’s definitely the most exciting color of the lineup. If you’re not a bronze fan, the only other options are Black Mystic and White Mystic.
In terms of buttons and ports, the power button and volume rocker sit on the right side of the device, while the left side has no buttons, making it easier to hold it with one hand without accidentally causing anything. The top of the phone has a SIM card slot, and the bottom has a USB Type-C charging port and Dolby stereo speakers. Those coming from one of the previous Notes will notice that the S-Pen has been moved from the bottom-left stowage to the bottom-right. While the switch doesn’t bother me, it can take some getting used to if you’re coming from a previous Note device.

Take off the Note 20 Ultra and you’ll find a triple-rectangular camera module that looks better than the pill-shaped camera setup on the Note 10. Like the S20 series, it’s more modern and aesthetically pleasing.

Thick camera bump on the back. I don’t usually harp on such a defined bump, but for a phone designed specifically to take notes with a pen, it will be annoying after a while.
When the phone is placed on a flat surface, it often shakes back and forth when I take notes, constantly making me paranoid about damaging the glass in the module. So, you definitely want to put the case to work.
On the front is a 6.9-inch Quad HD + screen with edge-to-edge (496 ppi). I’m not the biggest fan of the edge-to-edge display – something I realized after reviewing the OnePlus 8 Pro and Moto Edge + – especially as the increased width means that I accidentally trigger apps or certain actions with the palm of my hand.
I didn’t really have this problem with the Note 20 Ultra, but turning off the Edge panel feature, which pulls up the app drawer with a dedicated button on the side of the screen, helped.

Holding the phone with both hands also gives me a bit more control. Not only do I have to do this because the Note 20 Ultra is a big build, but because my fingers can’t stretch on the big screen. I have to rely on two thumbs to reach certain apps or buttons.
Regardless, the look itself is fantastic. It is super bright, even at the lowest brightness, and the colors are clear and vibrant. Having a 120Hz refresh rate (which can be lowered to 60Hz via settings) is also a plus – scrolling through social media, email threads and articles feels smooth.
The in-screen fingerprint sensor is also a surprising experience as my problem with the S20 Ultra, which doesn’t recognize pressure on the screen, forced me to rely on Face Unlock. The Note 20 Ultra, on the other hand, read my fingerprint on the first try, unlocking the phone in milliseconds.
The S-Pen feels useless to me. This does not mean that those coming from previous Note devices will be disappointed. Compared to the Note 10, Samsung claims to have reduced latency by up to 80 percent in the Note 20 Ultra. And it feels super responsive when taking notes.

The S-Pen also comes with some new features that could entice those looking to upgrade. For starters, Samsung introduced a new feature called Anywhere Actions that gives the S-Pen even more versatility. Basically, you can trigger different actions depending on how you wave the pen in front of the screen while holding down a button.
By default, Air Actions are set to be used to return to the home screen, open the app switcher, capture a specific part of the screen, or take a screenshot of whatever is on the screen – like a magic wand. But you can also customize Air Actions to launch different apps that you use every day.

As shown in the image above, you usually move the S-Pen in a strange direction as it is pointed. The feature is a bit fun to use at first, but the novelty wears off quickly. Not only will I forget whether some gestures are even the same, but there are also times when the phone will not recognize the one I tried if the password “air action” is not quite right.
