A football head coach has many responsibilities, but two stand out from the rest: managing the locker room and coming up with plans that help the team win games. Taylor is terrible in both. He has no control over his team and constantly benefits from the ideas of others. His success is a product of the people around him.
Before we get to the drama that shaped the rest of Season 1, let’s look at how poorly Taylor managed the clock late in the game. Dillon trailed by two scores with 6:00 left in the fourth quarter. Here’s a shot of the scoreboard at the time…
Now, leading up to Jason Street’s injury, the Panthers have moved the ball to their own 38-yard-line. And we get another blurry shot of the scoreboard in the background. The clock seems to be only 1:20.
Dillon has somehow already used up four minutes and 40 seconds and never made it to midfield. Andy Reid also thinks Dylan needs to speed things up. Call some deep shots, Taylor!

Another sign of bad coaching: Calling a ‘gun’ in a road jam but then lining the middle.
Yes, different teams use different terminology but the ‘gun’ is universal throughout football. Should line up in the street shotgun. I’ll put it on the road instead of the coach but it’s not a one time event, you’ll see later.
Perhaps Street would have read the defense a little better if he had lined up in the gun. Maybe he identified a safety in the middle of the field sitting on a post route with a receiver on.
Instead, Street looks down at his target as soon as he gets the snap and then floats a lazy ball up the middle. He’s an easy pick because of some terrific quarterbacking.

Dillon somehow made it to the state title game despite Taylor’s inept coaching, which is truly a testament to the talent on his roster. With players like Tim Riggins and “Smash” Williams, the Panthers must not rely on comebacks and last-second plays to win games. But here we are.

Meanwhile, Taylor, after weeks of flirting, finally agrees to take the coaching job at TMU just days before the state title game. Then he goes ahead and admits it publicly — before telling his team! – After being gently pressed by the journalist.

The players are obviously upset and will now have to answer questions about their coach’s departure. One thing you don’t want before a big game is a distracted locker room. Good job, coach.
Give me a moment to defend Taylor. Matt Sarasen, who replaced the injured Street at quarterback, had the most ridiculous response to the news that Taylor had taken the TMU job. He is really asking, “Why is he leaving?” This kid gets an offer to coach at a big D-1 school, a job that will pay him a lot of money, and you expect him to live in some podunk town coaching the high school football team? You are so selfish, Matt.
We finally get to the game, and things don’t go well for Dylan at first. Surprise, surprise: The team coached by Eric Taylor comes out early. This happens a lot in this series. What does he do from Saturday to Thursday? He certainly doesn’t prepare his team.
Saracens were under pressure early in the game and struggled with their accuracy. I have a question: Why does Dillon lean so much on a backup QB with two of the best running backs in the state on the roster? Taylor, run the damn ball. The Mustangs’ defensive line was hyped before the game, yet Taylor comes out with three straight passing plays to open?

Saracen’s poor play continued in the first half as the Mustangs took a big lead. Just before halftime, he bails out of a clean pocket and throws his whole body straight at a defender.
We didn’t see Smash Williams or Tim Riggins running in the first half montage. This is a terrible gameplan.
On the other side of the ball, the Panthers defense has no answer for Ray “Voodoo” Tatum. He is beating them. A defensive gameplan is no better than an offensive one.
(Unrelated football question: Why is the team’s logo a P? Yes, I get that they’re the Panthers, but shouldn’t the logo be D for Dillion? It’s like Purdue wearing a B on the side of its helmet, or Syracuse rocking an O. That’s weird.)

Finally, the Panthers get Williams and Riggins involved, and Dillon goes down for the score. Who would have thought!? It turns out that giving the ball to your best players is a good idea!
We’re late in the game now and Dillon is riding the momentum of his running game. Instead of continuing the run game, Taylor gets pretty and goes for a big passing play, which surprisingly results in a sack.
The Panthers are close to midfield and now need a touchdown to win. Let’s see what Taylor came up with…
Wait wait didn’t Taylor make the game winning play himself? It was Saracen’s idea! What does Taylor do!?!?!

The play doesn’t even work. Williams still had to break three tackles to get into the end zone. Running it on a deep curl on the sideline will be equally effective. If anything, the hook-and-ladder element made the play difficult to pull off.
I believe Taylor deserves credit for rallying the team at the half, but if he had shown his back running earlier in the game, the rally would not have been necessary. What a great game, coach. Enjoy the trophy.
We fast forward to Season 4 and Taylor is now in East Dillon. And … he’s still running the same tired dropback passing offense under center. Mike Mularkey’s answer to fake football.
He has a dynamic quarterback like Vince Howard and doesn’t run a spread option attack? Are you really going to put a player like Matt “Sam Bradford” Saracen in a scheme? Go shotgun—build a real shotgun this time—and run some reading options.

With his team in need of a spark, Taylor is finally called upon to play shotgun. Taylor told Howard to start in the middle and then go to the gun, which seems unnecessary, but we’ll take what we can get at this point.
Where Taylor beats me is the actual play-calling. Not only did his team not practice the play, Taylor also admitted he didn’t know if the play was legal.
Howard doesn’t even go for the gun! What’s going on with Taylor’s teams? Don’t they know what shotgun formation is? Do they realize that Taylor is a terrible coach and ignores his instructions? Either way, it’s an indictment of his coaching ability.
Now before you start comparing Taylor to Bill Belichick, let’s reexamine this play. It is totally illegal. In more ways than one.

The Lions only have six players. A legal football formation requires seven players to line up on the line of scrimmage. An illegal creation flag must be thrown.
