Doctor Who Blu Ray Collection – Doctor Who: The Collection continues with season 23. For the first time in The Collection a cover story spans the entire issue. It also sees Sixth Doctor Colin Baker make his high definition debut.
Season 23 is an interesting season of Doctor Who. Following the cancellation, which then went on hiatus, the show returned. As the Doctor stands trial, reality bleeds into the fantasy world. This is a season that, like the previous box set, has been very well served by the DVD release. So what are the reasons to invest again this season?
Doctor Who Blu Ray Collection
Now this is a gift but the physical item is another nice purchase. Lee Binding has delivered another strong cover with additional interior art featuring scenes from the series. Gavin Remill continues the DVD menu duties with additional visuals provided by Pixelogic and CGI work by Jonathan Pickard and Dave Ladkin. Once again Peter Crocker and SVS lead the photo reconstruction, with Mark Ayers on audio. This is another great product but the most interesting elements in this particular box are the stories themselves.

The transferred episodes are definitely presented in the best picture and sound quality. Unfortunately, however, extended versions of the episodes are also available for the first time. There are also without them. I always thought this third story of the experiment was the strongest, with some of the scariest images for an episode of Doctor Who. It’s a real thrill to present it without the pace being interrupted by test sequences.
While season 23 suffers at times from the court plot taking over everything, there are plenty of interesting moments. Joan Sims in Doctor Who. Introduction to glitz. Drathro and the L1 robot are clearly understood. Return to Sil. The controversial Fairy Tail. Teacher Anthony Ainley emerges. The true identity of the valley. There are many likes. Of course, it may not quite add up, but Season 23 has many points and elements worth discussing.
Season 23, both published and unpublished plots, provide a lot of room for discussion. These have been covered extensively in the past and are available here again. However, there are also some new additions.

With Colin Baker returning to join fellow actors Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford. Fraser Haynes, Matthew Waterhouse and Mark Strickson are also watching the episodes. Despite being a seemingly random trio of ex-partners, they offer some interesting insights. As related variables, they select properties such as the critical position for the first part.
Repeats also with the authors who share the discussion over a pint or two. However, there is a catch. These are the writers, and their script editor, for what was season 23 before it was abandoned. Unfortunately, the dialogue is a bit stop-start but this is due to the use of fictional scenes. These are done very well through Big Finish’s audio adaptations and specially created visuals. This allows viewers to get an idea of stories that didn’t make it to their TV screens. The argument is understandable and continues to make this special bonus feature a welcome addition.
Elsewhere, Matthew Sweet has a conversation with Bonnie Langford. This feature of the long watch makes for interesting viewing. Although Langford may look down on his Doctor Who role as just another job in his long career, he acknowledges how beloved the show is. This approach may also expand her memory that Mel’s character wasn’t really given to her, which is unusual for an actress to play her. ‘
He’s also fun to watch, if a little weird. When the champagne is flowing, so is the conversation. However, I could do without the silly ‘sad, get married, leave’ arguments.
Doctor Who: The Collection
Season 23 continues Doctor Who: The Collection but manages to offer something new. Although the behind-the-scenes stories are already well served by the bonus features, it’s worth the investment for the exciting new versions of the broadcast episodes. Even if the Sixth Doctor isn’t your favorite Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23 is worth buying. Having already released the final series of the Seventh Doctor (and the last of the classic series) on Blu-ray in December 2019, it’s time for his first year to finally get the full season treatment.
As we know, Sylvester McCoy’s predecessor, Colin Baker, refused to return, so the season opens with a highly unusual scene in which McCoy’s Doctor makes his first appearance.
Its revival was prompted by Kata O’Mara’s villainous Time Lady as the title character in ‘Time and the Rani’, one of the four series included here.
Doctor Who: The Peter Capaldi Collection
Also featured are the towering horror of “Paradise Towers”, the Welsh holiday camp of “Delta and the Bannermen” and the debut of the famous member Ace in “Dragonfire”.
The first three stories also feature former EastEnders cast member Bonnie Langford as Doctor Mel Bush’s fitness companion, including from the Sixth Doctor era.
Eight discs packed with bonus features, including 24 seasons of the show, extended versions of each series and archive clips.
Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US. Series 13 will be released later this year.
