The Pac-12 Network and DirecTV (now merged with AT&T, which carries the Pac-12 Network on its cable TV service) were believed to be working on a deal before the season began. Channel 612 has been testing with the satellite carrier and a deal is rumored to be in place by the time the season begins. With hours to go, Arizona Vs. Nets and were there from the beginning, floating. The conference struggled to reach an effective and respectable number of subscribers, largely because channels were not carried by DirecTV. However, the two were once very close.
In 2015, Pac-12 Networks decision makers and DirecTV people reached the “finish line,” as former Pac-12 Networks director of programming Mark Pettyx describes it. He recalled being on the receiving end of negotiations to add the Pac-12 Networks to DirecTV that weekend before DirecTV added more orders.

“It felt like an announcement for us to be on Direct TV,” Pettix said in The Athletic’s oral history of the network.
DirecTV’s demand was that as part of the deal, the twelve universities would spend seven figures annually on AT&T (DirectTV’s parent company) telecommunications services and AT&T would become the “preferred” provider.
Arizona State President Michael Crow said: “It’s a terrible deal … They were basically not interested in making a fair deal. Nobody saw this as a fair deal.”
“That was the first time we all realized, ‘We’re not going on DirecTV,'” said Ashley Adamson, the network’s studio host and reporter.

The deal will bring in projected revenue of $35 million in the first year, while the Pac-12 Network will remain in DIRECTV’s “Choice” tier and provide access to an additional 16.4 million homes. The network reached about 19 million homes.

FOX Sports has unveiled a new state-of-the-art digital studio in Los Angeles, California that will be home to a variety of original digital productions. The network announced the studio Tuesday, Flippin’ Bats recording Ben Verlander and Alex Curry, John Smoltz and Cal Ripken Jr. Featuring interviews with members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It took almost three months to complete the project and prepare for its debut. and implements emerging technologies to match modern consumer trends.
The studio is 3000 square feet and has a 360-degree shooting space with a moving LED floor. Looking at the space, there is a clear influence from FOX Sports Studio A, home of coverage of Major League Baseball and the National Football League. FOX will refresh the brand’s growing digital portfolio across the space
“It was during the pandemic and we pulled all the digital content out of my garage,” Ricardo Perez, senior director of digital production operations for FOX Sports, told Barrett Sports Media. “I actually built a little control room out of my garage in Santa Monica, and we hosted all of our digital shows and FS1 programming from that garage.”
Space at FOX Sports was awarded in January 2021 to FOX Sports’ digital division, an important opportunity for the company’s growing division. He is currently responsible for recording about 30 episodes a week and will now be able to reduce the setup and breakdown time required for production. Additionally, the studio is designed to be easily adaptable to produce new programming at a moment’s notice and primarily works with LED screens. In total, the studio has eight moving LED walls, a moving stage and furniture designed to move around.

“It really gives us the most flexibility and versatility to be able to create different content,” Perez said, “[and] stop you when you’re scrolling through your timeline. All that content will live on our social.” Media and the FOX Sports app, of course.
Most of FOX Sports’ digital content is produced in a 16:9 aspect ratio for viewing in landscape orientation. Instead of cropping and scaling content for vertical viewing, FOX Sports has designed its new studio space (9:16) with vertical content in mind. In fact, as the popularity of streaming continues to grow, younger generations are consuming this type of content more regularly than some linear programming. In fact, Nielsen Media Research’s latest measurement report shows that streaming accounts for 36.4% of daily TV consumption for P2+, with ad-supported free-to-air TV (FAST) platforms including FOX Corporation’s Tubi on the rise.

“Nothing compares to meeting people, but being able to physically interact with your team; Physically interact with things on an LED wall or an LED floor…that’s what you’re missing from these remote-style products,” Perez said. The reason is, that’s where our content cuts out another way to be able to.”
The Pac 12 Network Is On The Clock
The control room inside the space has direct access to the company’s video router, enabling the team to view more than 2,000 cameras simultaneously. Home production can also be done through the space, expanding the facility’s capabilities to power remote controls and play graphics.
Additionally, the space can be adapted to include multiple producers, associate producers and graphic operators, or vice versa, all run by one director. It’s a contemporary, state-of-the-art facility with a range of capabilities that the company sees as an important step in improving and diversifying its content in a saturated media ecosystem.
“I’m very high on it,” Perez said. “I hope to fill this studio seven days a week with several shows a day [and] increase the production, not just in quantity, but in quality. We’ve grown tremendously in three years. Years ago, I was out of my garage and the zoom boxes I had. I was producing shows from everyone there, so I can now have a 360-degree space where the possibilities are truly endless.
