Many New York Jets fans see this week’s trip to Denver as an easy winning game due to the Broncos’ grotesque offense, but they are overlooking how much of a challenge the Denver defense will be for New York’s offense.

The Jets just had trouble moving the ball (season-low 278 yards) against a Green Bay Packers defense that isn’t playing as well as Denver. Green Bay is 15th in points allowed and 24th in defensive DVOA. Denver is a completely different test. If the Jets offense plays as well as it did last week, the Broncos will punish them a lot more than the Packers.

Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur needs to come up with the perfect plan if New York’s offense has any chance of putting together a win-caliber performance this week.

Denver’s defense is thriving right now, but it has some distinct gaps that the Jets can exploit. The holes must be the center of LaFleur’s design.

If I were LaFleur, here are a few keys I’d emphasize in this week’s game plan, each focused on exposing one of the Broncos’ rare defensive flaws.

In the win over Green Bay, the Jets dramatically increased their 12-man usage (1 RB / 2 TE / 2 WR), using them on a season-high 34% of offensive plays, after a peak of 21% in offensive plays. Five games. . New York focused on tight two-end packages to establish a physical, run-first mentality, which is what they’ve always wanted to do since signing C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin in free agency.

I’m glad the Jets found a new approach that worked for them last week. But I want things to change for Denver.

The Broncos are much better at stopping the pass (1st in pass defense DVOA) than they are at stopping the run (18th in run defense DVOA), so I want the Jets to maintain their ground-and-pound mentality this week. However, I want them to do it in a different way.

Jets Will Be Without Key Defender Vs. Broncos This Weekend

Denver is amazing at stopping the run against 12 guys. It is against 11 players (1 RB/1 TE/3 WR) that the Broncos have major problems in the running game.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Broncos are allowing just 2.7 yards per carry against 12 personnel this season, which ranks third in the NFL. Against 11 personnel, the Broncos allow 5.8 yards per carry, which ranks fourth-worst.

If you’re concerned that YPC doesn’t provide enough context, the rankings hold up when looking at EPA (expected points added) per lead. Denver allows the second-fewest EPA/carries against 12 personnel (-0.44) and the sixth-most EPA/carries against 11 personnel (+0.12).

The Jets need to lean into this. Yes, 12 personnel worked pretty well for them last week, but different opponents require different game strategies. The Broncos team is asking the Jets to reduce the use of 12-man and build their offense around 11-man concepts.

What Is The Implied Probability The Jets Beat The Broncos?

Interestingly, the Jets are actually much better at getting 11 personnel than 12 personnel. New York ranks 22nd in YPC of 12 employees (3.6) and 11th in YPC of 11 employees (5.4). The Jets are 26th in EPA/lead outs per 12 personnel (-0.19) and sixth in EPA/lead outs per 11 personnel (+0.12).

Despite the increased use of 12 personnel, the Jets actually had their best rushing success against the Packers when they had 11 personnel on the field, rushing for 78 yards on eight carries (9.8 YPC). Notably, they are dominant when running to the outside with 11 men, as seen in these two plays:

Wide receiver Corey Davis is the key to the Jets’ success in these scenarios. Davis is such a good blocker that he essentially serves as a second tight end on outside run plays. This gives the Jets a huge advantage. The defense deploys lighter personnel (mine substituting a LB in place of a CB) in response to the offense removing a TE for a WR, but with Davis leading the way on the outside, the Jets don’t lose much blocking talent (if anyone Ez. ).

New York likes to put Davis in tight splits and let him block defenders inside, opening up the outside lane. You can see him do this in each of the plays above.

If I’m Mike LaFleur, I’m going to take a big chunk of Uzoma’s snaps and split them between Garrett Wilson and Elijah Moore. The two wide receivers were the victims of New York’s increased use of 12-man personnel, while Uzomah was the main beneficiary.

Corey Davis continues to be a mainstay (never dipping below 74% of snaps this year), but Wilson (44%) and Moore (58%) fell to season lows last week while Uzomah (78%) rose to a seasonal high. . There will be games where that approach makes sense, like last week, but the Broncos game isn’t one of them.

Last week the Jets used 11 personnel just 38% of the time. In Denver, they need to be closer to where they were in the first four games of the year, when they used it 74% of the time.

Play by exploiting Denver’s weaknesses. The Broncos are much worse at defending the run than they are at defending the pass, and they are much worse at defending the run against lighter personnel than against heavier personnel. Build around that.

As a 3-4 defense, the Broncos’ edge defenders are outside linebackers with more experience in coverage (compared to a 4-3 defense like the Jets’ unit, which employs more strong defensive ends who rarely drop down). So, the Broncos often get creative and put their edge defenders in coverage.
