Wrecker wasn’t the only figure that needed a special paint job. “We spent a lot of time getting the aged look of the armor right,” says O’Brien. “These are not natural-looking characters following a well-worn worldview tradition.
For Gar Saxon, Maul’s loyal captain, it was a delicate balance to adjust the helmet’s sculpting to feel as if the character’s hidden eyes were piercing right through. “That’s supposed to be intimidating, so I tweaked and adjusted the angle of the helmet and visor to give it a slightly cooler look,” says O’Brien, adding that it’s simple and elegant. “Another new thing we’ve done throughout this series is experimenting with some new dry brush techniques to match the coloring and shading styles seen in the animation.”
