Christmas Things To Get For 11 Year Olds – For the past two years, my 11-year-old has been asking for presents for Christmas. I think this could be a great idea, especially for older kids. My son doesn’t need any more (although I did wrap a piece of jewelry for a gift). Experiences create memories and can extend a happy holiday into the new year.
A word of caution: I’m not sure how sustainable this will be once all four kids start asking for big experiences as a Christmas present, but so far that’s not been an issue. The rest still like the toy. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Either way, this year the 11-year-old asked to go to San Diego and see the Zoo, Sea World and Zoo Safari. Last year my husband took him to the Georgia Aquarium, so this year it was my turn.

That’s a lot of trips in just 2.25 days from being there. We flew out of Newark (instead of Philly) for a direct flight, but that added an extra 90 minutes of driving to the start and end of the trip. I was especially aware of this on the way home when our flight to Newark was delayed*, making it a very late night stroll down the New Jersey road. Also, I was sick on most of the trip. Every night I wake up with a cough and have to find CVS to replenish my Ricola cough medicine.
But we did a lot of interesting things. We stayed at Pacific Beach, a hotel overlooking the ocean, and every morning I went for a brisk jog down the coastal path. The last morning, my son and I went for a walk on the beach; the night before I got into the water and got stuck in it. In January! We also enjoyed a couple of dips in the hotel’s outdoor hot tub and even a quick dip in the regular pool, which is surprisingly clever.
(Because let’s face it, one of the pluses of a trip like this is that there’s no snow and cooler temperatures on the East Coast. Both Saturday and Sunday are mostly sunny and 70 degrees!) .
The zoo we visited on Saturday was great as always. We especially liked the new section that opened since our last stay there (in 2016) with exhibits from the African Highlands and Madagascar. For zoo parents, it’s great that most snack carts sell craft beer. The panda exhibit was annoying because of its popularity, but the three polar bears got up and ate bits of meat stuck to the rocks. We left mid-day and flew to Sea World, where we watched a dolphin show, an orca “meeting” (they don’t call it a show anymore) and Wild Arctic, our hobby. my son’s personal. He enjoyed the simulated helicopter ride and then spent a long time observing beluga whales and walruses. Then we visited friends for pizza. We ate pizza all night and at the San Diego airport on Monday. Did I mention this is an 11 year old’s Christmas present?

Our visit to the Safari Park Zoo on Sunday was definitely the highlight of the trip. All in all, it’s a great park where the animals are on display somewhere close to their natural habitat (perhaps 1800 acres). But what was particularly interesting was that we pre-booked a ‘safari caravan’ from them and drove the van to the African delta show, where we got up close to giraffes and rhinos and fed them both. . Now, as a zoo-goer (I have 4 kids), I’ve fed giraffes before. But not a rhinoceros! The rhinoceros also let us pet him after feeding him an apple. It was a new experience for me. It’s amazing to see these animals up close. This is the advantage of gifts for children based on experience. They can also be cool to parents sometimes!
Alas, the flight home was extremely fast – I guess to atone for the good weather, and we landed in Terminal C after parking in Terminal A, which caused AirTran to have a long wait (doing it). How can 4 trains go in the opposite direction before one gets your way?). If only southern California were closer to Pennsylvania. But then, I guess it wouldn’t be California, a fact that was driving home as my son and I ran through the 15 degree cold to the car in t-shirts and fleece tops.
*Of course, that’s why we fly straight when we can from a distance. A delay of 1 hour and 15 minutes can easily lead to connection loss, thus increasing latency.
