Most Singaporeans are probably on the wrong mobile plan, costing them hundreds of dollars a year. We discovered this during a discussion on our Facebook personal finance group, where Singaporeans like us share their biggest fixed expense every month – the mobile phone bill.

For 3GB: M1 – Their plan is the best value at $20 per month for 150 minutes of talk time.

For 6GB and 9GB: Starhub wins with its Plan Plus 3, which adds 3GB for $6, and DataJump, which adds $10 more data per month.
20GB: Circles.Life – Their plan disrupts the market with a 20GB add-on plan for $20 per month, which is cheap for mobile data heavy users. Plus, you get an additional 500MB of permanent storage every 6 months of your stay.
For 6GB, 25GB: Singtel – Singtel is clearly aggressive in winning the 12 month SIM contract game. The M1 is another contender in the 12-month contract game, and it’s clearly failing here.

Here’s the thing, every telco actually offers something called a “SIM only plan” that costs a lot less than most 2 year mobile plans. Here’s the hard evidence behind how telcos are competing with each other with SIM-only plans.
Monthly data packs are our top priority. We’ve mixed different add-ons for each telco to get the best possible bundle. By data we mean a data connection that is not limited to a specific location (eg Singtel wifi).
We omit the comparison of SMS bundles as this is not a decisive factor due to the low usage of such features.
Singtel and M1 have launched SIM-only 12-month contract mobile plans in an attempt to lock in the loyalty of some customers. Unfortunately, Starhub and Circles.Life have no such plans.

This is the first mobile plan we’ve started and it’s been pretty easy to renew.
The brutal truth is that telcos (telcos) are discontinuing your favorite phone to make it more attractive to re-sign a contract. They then spread the remaining cost and interest of your “subsidized” phone over the rest of your 2 year phone plan, leaving you with no choice but to stick with them.
With new entrants like Circle.Life and fierce competition, the power has shifted to the consumer (i.e. you). Data plans have been drastically reduced, and if you re-sign up for a new 2-year plan, you’re really losing out.
Assuming data volume is the main priority for mobile plans, we have a simple strategy: follow our chosen phone in the carousel and get a SIM-only plan with the same data volume.

For the $30 and $50 tourist SIM cards, you can add money to the main account to extend the life of the card, but hey! Travel value (100GB data, 3000 minutes of local calls, 5000 text messages, overseas data roaming) will not increase. In other words, hi! Travel SIM becomes simple prepaid hi! Hello everyone! The Tourist SIM card allows unlimited usage of Facebook, Whatsapp, LINE and WeChat, however, if you read the fine print, you will find that usage is limited to 1GB per day. Based on my past experience, I think StarHub is the most competitive carrier and they often offer better prices than other carriers through promotions. However, I feel like they have a lot of promotions, add-ons, bonuses, and various top-up prices. Some promotions last for a long time, while others disappear after a while.
It can be difficult to make the right decision when trying to choose the best StarHub card or the best StarHub plan at any given time when the variables are constantly changing. For the sake of convenience, I recommend ignoring all bonuses when trying to decide which card/plan is best.
