“For major titles, it’s generally 50 cents on the dollar, and the most I pay for almost anything is money. Sometimes I can pay a little more if there’s something we need for the store,” says Matthew Young, who buys used Blu-rays for CineFile, one of the last independent rental stores in the world.
He adds that CineFile has a small margin and people can get more if they sell on the open market, albeit without the convenience of an instant sale. For example, a Blu-Ray that sells for $1 at a rental store might cost $5 on the general market.
High-end Blu-ray discs can fetch big bucks, especially those produced by boutique distributors and restoration companies like Criterion, Twilight Time and Arrow, as well as out-of-print (OOP) discs.

“There are a few discs that really hold their value,” says Jesse Nelson of Diabolik, an online store specializing in horror titles. “Something like Cannibal Holocaust — which is a nice package — probably sells for $20 used, but you can probably pick up any Harry Potter movie or something like that at a garage sale for $5. For a disc that is no longer available, it can be anywhere from $50-$100 to several hundred.
Here’s a closer look at each of them. Condition Condition is a big factor in Blu-Ray value. Discs that have never been opened or played and that contain the original boxes, o-cards and booklets are worth more than those that have been used or are missing original material.
“If it’s not in pristine condition, there’s nothing I can do with it,” says Young. “While value is largely based on titles, it doesn’t matter if the title is good if it’s not in good condition. Sometimes I have the opportunity to buy a title I want, but I can’t because it’s trash. I can’t in good conscience put it on the shelf or in the lending library if it’s not in good condition.”

For example, both Frozen and Avatar generally sell for less than $10, while obscure horror films can command great value.

“Any obscure horror film that hasn’t had a mainstream release can make a lot of money,” says Young. “There’s an ’80s horror title called Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker that costs no less than $70 or $80. If you want a brand new copy on Amazon, it will be listed for $500.

Blu-rays produced by these companies are usually remastered and released with special features, extra discs and new artwork. Steelbook, for example, designs unique metal cases for Blu-rays, while Arrow Films has released special anniversary editions of titles such as Donnie Darko and Hellraiser.

To put the price difference in perspective, a Donnie Darko Director’s Cut Blu-Ray in very good condition could sell for around $5, while Arrow’s Donnie Dark 4-disc limited set can go for $135.
Edition can also affect the value of a Blu-Ray disc, especially if the first edition included special features like a case, o-card, and extra discs.
“A lot of times labels release these extras on the first pressing of a disc and then not on subsequent pressings, so these things really add value,” Nelson says. “For example, Arrow in the UK released four House movies in a box set. You can still get individual discs – although I believe they’re currently discontinued so only what’s in the wild is still available – but a box of them all costs an incredible amount of money.”

“For many of these titles, there’s only a certain amount they’ll print, and when they run out, you’re at the mercy of the aftermarket,” says Young. “Something that goes out of print raises the price quite a bit and I can get quite a bit of money on the secondary market. Inland Empire is out of print and can cost a pretty penny, and Song of the South was only printed in Europe so can cost a pretty penny. It’s all based on supply and demand.”
He adds that with the advent of video streaming, people no longer collect Blu-rays like they used to. However, collectors hold on to their valuable Blu-rays and are reluctant to sell them. This increases the rarity of many titles, especially reissues, but also suggests that only the rarest and most desirable Blu-rays are worth much, and only to a dwindling number of collectors.
“The market really dictates it,” says Nelson. “It’s really about how much people are willing to pay for a disc based on how rare it is.”
