Jaguars and Cougars… these two cats just love me and I’ve been with them both. It is similar in some ways, and very different in others. Yes, they have areas in common, so that’s a question worth asking.

First, let’s discuss the data that can be used to answer this question. The puma species is large. It extends inland from the entire western third of the United States to Canada, and passes through the Isthmus of Panama and runs through almost the entire South American continent. In fact, the cougar/cougar/mountain lion/panther (all exactly the same animal, btw) has the unique distinction of having more land than any land animal in the Western Hemisphere! It covers 28 countries, from southern Alaska to southern Chile! So for those of you who may have thought that a mountain lion was actually a California or Rocky Mountain cat…as you can see, it’s not! The available research on Puma concolor is as extensive as it gets. This is a great animal to study in different places. However, despite the many studies that have been done over the years, researchers of this cat continue to learn more and have made some great discoveries recently; The unknown life of a cougar is one such wonder. For a long time it was believed that when cougars leave their mothers, they are alone for the rest of their lives; Similar to a tiger in this regard. As a result, the cougar has time to reunite with families, where scattered litters sometimes “come to mother’s house” to stay with her, her siblings, and even new litters that have not hatched on their own. This is an excellent academic paper written by Carmina E. Gutiérrez-González and Carlos A. López-González. I know Carlos; I met him (although he probably didn’t know me). Their research is mainly about the relationship between jaguars and cougars. I am proud to say that I was involved in some of the organizations that these two researchers collected their data from, and I know some of the people involved in this work. I am very happy to have, in some way, added to the databases discussed and cited in this excellent study.
It’s an interesting read if you want more. So… at the end of the study, the facts related to our question were made clear. However, I feel that the location and conditions used in this study are specific. They gathered in the northern part of Sonora in Mexico. This area is dry and is just one example of the variety of ecosystems these two cats share. I can’t explain their thoughts clearly because I don’t want to misunderstand anything. But I will comment on my translation. In dry areas such as northern Mexico, these animals are smaller compared to their South American brothers. This makes them very close to the Cougars, who also make their homes there. This creates a relationship that is specific to northern Mexico, and the validity of this relationship cannot be applied to all puma / jaguar relationships in the Americas. In situations where the jaguar and the puma are similar in size, they have found a way to live together. Although their entire territory is one region, each region has its own regions that it holds in high esteem. Two equally large beasts know that there is nothing to gain and nothing much to lose by capturing the other. There is no need to try to dominate the other through physical combat, because it is likely that both will leave with serious injuries. Who needs that, right? So I think their relationship is mutual respect. When they meet in these places, they just give each other a hat…someone might say “what’s going on?” … the other would say “Hey, what’s going on?”… shake their head, and they would go about their business, in their neck of the woods. But there are some interesting aspects to all this cohabitation.
First… about their sacrifice. Jaguars eat larger species than cougars, even if they are the same size. The puma’s main prey is deer and calves. But when you remove both of their most popular foods… the rest of their diet is different. Jaguars also include larger animals than deer and calves in their diet, such as large cattle; Although the cougar makes their diet with smaller animals than deer and calves, such as peccaries and small game, even squirrels and songbirds. At first, you might say… well, that makes sense… a jaguar is a big cat and a puma is not. But, this still applies even in areas where two cats are the same; A place where the animal respects the puma and does not like to fight. So…if these animals don’t want to bother these cougars, it would make sense that the same predators hunt the same animals. However, this is not the case. I will give you my opinion. There are several reasons. Evidence suggests that both cats may have advantages in physical combat. This, despite the fact that the power of the jaws of the jaguar is well known and often greater than that of the puma. Unlike the Jaguar Puma, it is built heavy on the shoulders. Puma is very similar, front and back. This allows the puma to run faster, jump longer, and have more speed and agility. Strong jaws are no help in battle. These jaws are designed for hunting, not fighting. A jaguar has no problem taking down a bull or a large bull. It does this, as I have said many times, by crushing the animal’s skull and directly impaling the dog.
