After introducing a small LED backlight to the Google Editors’ Choice 6 Series starting in 2021, TCL is finally bringing the technology to its 6-Series 4K Roku TV. That lighting system helps the 65-inch model we reviewed ($999.99) score well in Test and beat his predecessor. The TV also works well for gaming due to the low input and AMD FreeSync Pro support. That said, it can’t match the color accuracy of its sibling or be as bright as the Hisense U8H ($1,399.99 for 65 inches), our current Editors’ Choice winner. Those minor flaws aside, the 6-Series is still the best set you can get with Roku built.
Compared to most current TVs, TCL R655 looks simple and unusual. A thin metal band frames the screen, while a thin gunmetal bezel defines the bottom edge. The bottom has the TCL logo in the center, along with a trapezoidal shape at the bottom with an infrared sensor. It’s not a thin TV at just 2.7 inches, but the curved plastic back ensures you won’t notice any thickness when viewing it from the front.

Tcl 4 Series (2021) Review: Roku On The Cheap, 4k Screen Included
The box includes a remote for Roku TV. It is a short black stick with rounded corners and Roku’s signature big, purple and small slider. The home, back and power buttons are on the top of the pad, along with a jacked-up microphone. Playback controls and dedicated service buttons for Apple TV, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix are located at the bottom of the panel. The right edge holds the volume bar and the mute button. The remote doesn’t have a headphone jack for private listening or a mid-field microphone for hands-free TV control, but you can replace that with the Roku Voice Remote Pro if you want those features.
The R655 uses the same Roku TV smart TV interface as its predecessor. It is a simple platform and has access to major video streaming services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube, although Twitch is not yet available. Roku TV also supports Apple AirPlay, which means you can stream to your screen directly from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
You can find anything to watch using the remote control by pressing the microphone button and speaking into the microphone PIN. Voice commands also work for launching apps and controlling the TV. The voice search feature is fast and useful, but it doesn’t have the extensive functionality of a full-fledged voice assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. In other words, it cannot control smart home devices, check your schedule or provide weather forecast.
The TCL 65R655 is a 4K TV with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports high frequency content (HDR) in Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and hybrid log gamma (HLG). It does not have an ATSC 3.0 receiver.

We tested the TV using a Klein K-80 colorimeter (opens in a new window), a Murideo SIX-G signal generator (opens in a new window), and Calman Vertical Display software (opens in a new window). Like the TCL 6-Series 4K Google TV before it, the 6-Series Roku TV uses a mini-LED backlight system that provides better HDR content performance than the previous 6-Series Roku TV (which is about a year older than the Google TV model).
Note that the 65R655’s maximum full-screen brightness is lower than the 6-Series Google TV (923 nits) and the U8H (842 nits), although it’s still quite good. Note, in our tests, both HDR Bright and HDR Dark modes show a maximum brightness of about 600 nits for full-screen white space and 1,480 nits for 18% white space, but we recommend the normal mode of HDR between. Thirdly because it provides better visual color performance.
The newer 6-Series showed slightly darker images in our tests with SDR signals in movie mode than the other models, with a 310-nit peak brightness and 755-nit peak brightness and a partial 18%. This is also good performance for SDR signals, which most TVs tend to display less brightness than HDR signals.
The table above shows the 6 sets of color implementations as points and target color standards as rectangles. It compares an SDR signal in movie mode against the Rec.709 broadcast standard and an HDR signal in standard HDR mode with a color temperature set to warm compared to the DCI-P3 digital cinema standard. In both cases, whites are warmer than they should be, while cyan and magentas distort green and red respectively. The main color is generally quite accurate. Green and HDR TV signals lag a bit, but not by much. The TCL 6-Series Google TV and Hisense U8H both had slight color distortion, but not to the extent of the 65R655. Of the three, Google TV 6 Series has the most accurate white, while the U8H achieves the best and most balanced primary color.
