This event is considered a major industry milestone in introducing Ultra HD 4K technology to consumers.

I’ll start with the bad news. Although 4K/Ultra High Definition TVs have been available for several years, there still aren’t many true 4K TV shows and movies.

Aside from YouTube, 4K today mainly consists of original TV series streamed by Netflix and Amazon. We won’t get 4K Blu-ray until next year, and there are no 4K TV channels on the horizon.
So what’s the good news? There’s more 4K to watch than last year, and your new 4K TV probably has an app or three that can display it for free (as part of your subscription). If your TV doesn’t have the right app, you can buy a new 4K streaming device, like the Roku 4, to deliver those extra pixels.
4K promises better picture quality because it has four times more pixels than the highest high-definition resolution, which is 1080p/1080i. However, those extra pixels are often difficult to detect in the best cases, and in our tests 4K streams and regular high-definition streams looked remarkably similar. So, while 4K may look great, so does good old 1080p, and you shouldn’t be blown away by the difference.
Below you’ll find an overview of today’s 4K/Ultra HD sources and what you need to watch them on your TV. It is important to remember that almost all the content listed is streaming, and to do so, you need an Internet connection of at least 15 Mbps, more ideally. Netflix recommends 25 Mbps.

Amazon Original shows like The Man in the High Castle and Amazon pseudo-exclusives like Orphan Black. Some shows, like “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Bosch,” are also in high dynamic range (HDR). Some 4K movies can be bought or rented.
You’ll need: Prime Subscription ($99, £79 a year, but includes things like free 2-day shipping, music streaming and more) for streaming; integrated applications; Fire TV or the latest Roku 4 box.
Netflix original shows like “House of Cards” and “Jessica Jones,” and movies like “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Skyfall.”
You need: the app built into your TV, Roku 4, Nvidia Shield, Amazon Fire TV (latest model) or Tivo Bolt; upgrade (if you haven’t already) to the Netflix Premium plan, which is currently more per month than the standard plan. More information here.

Movies like “San Andreas,” “The Lego Movie” and “Edge of Tomorrow” are in the American service. On some devices and with some movies, HDR and Dolby Atmos are also available. Rent $10, buy $25 to $30.
You’ll need: Roku Series 4 or Vizio R (currently the only HDR and Atmos option). Vudu recommends a connection speed of at least 11 mbps, slightly lower than others. More information here.
Several dozen titles, most of which you’ve never heard of, for rent or purchase. A few dozen other more popular titles are also available in HDR.
There is a lot of free 4K video content on YouTube, but most of it is “demo stock” like slow-mo landscapes, skinny bugs and other great shots.

You’ll need: A device with a 4K compatible YouTube app, i.e. Roku 4 or Nvidia Shield (for built-in apps, usually only 2015 TVs, excluding Vizios, can handle YouTube in 4K ). Or a computer.
Random collection of 4K movies, like “Face/Off,” “”Almost Famous,” “Footloose” (no, the other one), “Star Trek” and “Terminator Genisys.”
You’ll need: Some Sony, Samsung, Vizio or HiSense TVs. The app was also recently added to the Roku 4. More info here.
No 4K channels yet, but some movies to rent. According to DirecTV, “The number of 4K movies varies from week to week, but there are always at least two 4K movies available for immediate viewing.”

You need: DVR Genie (“Model HR34 and up”); 4K TVs with HDCP 2.2 or “TV Direct 4K-Ready” (many Samsung and LG models). More information here.
If you’re a gamer, many games can be played at 3,840×2,160, but you’ll need serious hardware to do so. See How to use your 4K TV as a monitor for more information. It’s also a way to get YouTube (if your TV doesn’t support it) and Vimeo in 4K (which is starting to roll out adaptive streaming to all users and across all their apps early next year).
In early 2016, we should see the first Ultra HD Blu-ray players and discs on the market. This should expand the amount of content significantly. More importantly, it will improve content quality, as 4K streams are at best slightly better — and can look worse — than (regular) Blu-ray.
In the first wave you can expect two things with absolute certainty: high disc prices and low film quality. As has been the case with every new format release. Terrible movies on beautiful, beautiful discs (or tapes, or big discs).
Epix: The First Tv Network To Stream 4k Ultra Hd Movies In The Usa
Actually, there isn’t much 4K content out there yet. Some TV shows and some movies. At the beginning of the HD transition, we were in a slightly better situation, content-wise (thanks to all the broadcasters trying to outdo each other). If you’re thinking about getting a 4K TV because of the content, it’s still not worth it for that alone.
If your TV is a little old and you’re thinking of upgrading, know that 4K TVs aren’t stupid (yet), and the most beautiful TVs today just happen to be 4K, too. If you do, there will be some content to watch, and more than before, just not much. Still.
