The best small shop marketplace that offers genealogy and family history research help is Etsy. Etsy is a great place to sell family tree products. Your shop can get a lot of people to find you through Etsy searches, which is great when you’re just starting out. One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t own your account and it can disappear at any time if their policies change, so it’s always safer to have your own online store if you go this route. This way, your products can be found on the website you own, so if anything goes wrong with your Etsy shop, all your hard work describing products and creating photos is safely stored. I have an Etsy shop and a website where I sell the family tree products I make. Etsy shops are great for attracting new customers and in my experience most people who use the platform tend to be very nice! I would definitely recommend Etsy as your first step into marketing because you can benefit from both search engine traffic and Etsy’s internal search engine traffic. Whether you use Etsy, an e-commerce store, or both, the best way to promote your genealogy products and services is on Pinterest. Pins have a much longer lifespan than posts on any social media or advertising platform, and they often gain new traction at random times when people discover and retweet them. Trust me, every hour you invest on Pinterest can pay you more in the long term than a temporary post that disappears from your feed after 15 minutes.
Tailwind is a website where you can plan ahead and schedule your Pinterest pins. It’s great for planning ahead and automating your Pinterest campaigns so you don’t have to sit down and do it every day.

On the Tailwind website, they have a section called Tailwind Tribes. These are groups of Tailwind users with similar brands who come together and share each other’s content on Pinterest. The concept is about fair trade and helping each other succeed.
Think of Downwind Tribes as a clothes swap. Everyone brings clothes to the party and puts them in big piles on the table. Let’s say you contribute two outfits. This means you can see what other people have brought to the table, then pick two from the pile to take home. That way, clothes can circulate and people can exchange what they have for what they want.
When you join Tailwind, you can search and select the tribe you want to join (I link to family trees for both tribes later in this post). Let’s say you’ve joined both tribes. A real example of clothing sharing is when you can see all the Pinterest pins that other people have submitted to your tribe. When you see a pin that you think is a good fit for your Pinterest board, you can choose to pin it to Pinterest. Now suppose you posted a pin that someone else submitted. You have now earned the right to design your own Pinterest pin and submit it to the Tailwind tribe. If others like it, they can share it on their boards. So you can send a pin to the tribe and it won’t be shared at all, or you can send a pin that is shared 10 times. Sharing which pins also helps you learn what people like, so you can improve your brand identity over time as you learn.
How often your pins are shared depends on the quality of the images you create and how important they are to the tribe you share them with. I use Canva to create pin designs. Their free version has a ton of features and should have everything you need to start designing pins. Tailwind also features new pin design features. I prefer the results obtained with Canva, but either will do, depending on your style.
